Three Things About Elsie

I'd seen Three Things About Elsie here and there, I thought it looked interesting, so when it became available on a Kindle daily deal I downloaded it.

"84-year-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. As she waits to be rescued, she considers the charming new resident who looks exactly like a man she once knew - a man who died sixty years ago. His arrival has stirred distant memories she and Elsie thought they'd laid to rest. Lying prone in the front room, Florence wonders if a terrible secret from her past is about to come to light..."

I did enjoy this book but I found it written in a similar vein as Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey which I read back in 2016. A long forgotten mystery runs alongside a dementia storyline, but to be honest, I actually preferred Elizabeth is Missing.

I love a good twist in a story and there was one in Three Things About Elsie which I didn't see coming, so I thought that was good, and I really enjoyed seeing how the character of Simon the Handyman developed throughout the book, he was a likeable individual.

In my opinion, Three Things About Elsie is worth a read, but I enjoyed Elizabeth is Missing more.

  1. I read Elizabeth is Missing as part of a book club, I remember enjoying it if not all the story. I've got lots on my to read list at the moment but this book sounds like something I would enjoy. Thank you for the recommendation.

    1. My reading has slowed down a bit recently but I've got lots of books waiting to be read on my Kindle, as well as 'proper' books waiting in the wings too. That's not to mention all the things on my wish list which I haven't bought yet. The problem is that I keep finding more and more books that I want to read.

  2. I enjoyed Emma Healey's Elizabeth is Missing. We read it at a book group and it led to an interesting discussion. We also read Joanna Cannon's 'The Trouble With Sheep and Goats' but I didn't enjoy her style of writing as much and preferred Healey's style.

    1. Three Things about Elsie is very similar to Elizabeth is Missing, I should imagine that a book group discussion would be led along similar lines. I haven't read The Trouble with Goats and Sheep but that's another one which has caught my eye.

  4. I like an unfolding story.

But don't think I could "take" one, with a dementia story line. ,-)

    1. There's different aspects of the disease covered in the dementia storyline, many quite comical. Although it's a terrible disease, you do end up laughing through it quite often.

  5. Sounds like a good read. I only read "proper books", I have always loved books. I had a good clear out a couple of years ago, took half a dozen large bagfuls to the charity centre for distributing. Unfortunately I keep buying more books :)

    1. That's the problem, isn't it? So many great books just waiting to be read. My mum has always gone through books so quickly so always had bags full to take to the charity shop (though she doesn't read now she has dementia), but reading books on a Kindle cuts down on the number of actual books I have in the house.

    1. I think I'd have enjoyed this book more if I hadn't read Elizabeth is Missing first. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts if you do read Three Things About Elsie with you having read them the other way round.

  11. Your bound to enjoy some books more than others and I'm always intrigued by mysteries. So long as it's entertaining enough to read all the way through till the end, I would consider it time well spent.
