I spent Friday afternoon in A&E where it was discovered I have a broken toe. To be honest, I knew before I got to the hospital that something was broken as I heard it snap.
I was having a shower on Thursday when I realised that I'd left the big window open in the room downstairs so I quickly finished my shower, wrapped a towel around myself and managed to bang my foot on the sofa as I went to close the window. I heard a horrible snapping, well actually it was a crunching, noise in my foot.
Though my foot hurt when I put pressure on it, I waited until Friday to go to the hospital to have it x-rayed as I thought the pain might subside but when I got up on Friday morning, I found my middle toe to be bruised right the way around and I couldn't put any weight on my foot.
The hospital have said that it's an intra articular oblique fracture and it will take six weeks to mend, but I'm sure it will feel better long before that. Meanwhile, I can't stand any pressure underneath my foot so there'll be no driving for me for a little while. It's not painful unless I try to put my weight on it so I'm hobbling around a bit at the moment.
I was told to sit with my foot elevated for two or three days so I'm spending the weekend being waited on whilst I amuse myself with knitting, blog reading and TV watching. I've got my Kindle by my side too. It's a good job that Mick didn't have a cricket match yesterday, though I know he'd have definitely preferred to be there than fetching and carrying for me.
Oh I hope it heals up quickly. I have twice broken a toe and I know how annoying it is.Take care x
ReplyDeleteThis is the second one I've broken. They do tend to get in the way sometimes.
Deleteouch..
ReplyDeleteIt's not at all painful unless I try to stand on it, so that's something.
DeleteHope you have a speedy recovery and enjoy being waited on.
ReplyDeleteAny excuse to have everyone running around after me.
DeleteOh no, so sorry to hear this, very painful, lets hope it feel much better well before the six weeks. I suppose in the mean time you will just have to endure the pampering and knitting etc whilst it heals :-) xcx
ReplyDeleteIt's inconvenient more than anything else. I'm hoping that I'll be able to walk on it better once the bruising disappears.
DeleteRest is best, I hope you heal quickly, it's crazy how simple these accidents happen.
ReplyDeleteI was so annoyed with myself for rushing about. I wouldn't have believed I could break a bone by banging into the sofa.
DeleteSo sorry to hear of your mishap, Jo. Let's hope it will mend in the fastest possible time! Then you can go and kick the living daylights out of the sofa, the culprit! But make sure you have heavy duty boots on first!
ReplyDeleteMargaret P
I hope it doesn't take long to mend, or at least I'm able to get round a bit better than I am at the moment. I think I need some steel toecap boots when walking around the house in future, just for my own safety.
DeleteI feel for you. I once was hanging bedroom curtains as I balanced on a day bed. I kept reaching to the right to hook the curtains on and put my foot where there was nothing. I fell and went straight down onto my toe which bent under and snapped. The pain was excruciating. I rangy my husband, a hospital doctor, who came home to apply frozen peas. I could not weight bear for a couple of weeks. Ouch! Get will soon and enjoy the enforced rest.
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, the first time I broke a toe it was in a swimming pool when my toe somehow bent underneath my foot and snapped as I put my weight down, so similar to your experience. That was actually more painful than this time. More bruising has come out now since I took the photo, I'm hoping it won't be quite as painful to walk once the bruising goes.
DeleteOuch! I've broken a toe so I know how painful that can be, hope it heals quickly.
ReplyDeleteYou wouldn't think a broken toe would be quite so painful. It's okay providing I don't try to walk on it though.
DeleteI'm sorry to hear about your broken toe. It's easy to do especially when there's a weak bone because you've had a previous fracture. Rest up and I hope you're soon on the mend and mobile again. Our local grandson has just broken his wrist again by jumping about, falling and banging it on the wooden arm of the sofa. This time it was not during a sport activity. At the start of the Summer holidays it's frustrasting for him that he can't go footballing or rowing.
ReplyDeleteMy previous broken toe was on the other foot. I knew I'd really whacked my foot on the sofa but I didn't think it would cause so much damage. Both Daniel and Eleanor had broken bones at very inconvenient times, Eleanor broke her arm after falling off a stool whilst we were on holiday, which meant no swimming in the pool, and Daniel broke his arm after banging it against a goalpost right at the beginning of the cricket season. He wasn't impressed by that.
DeleteCrikey - I'm forever bashing my toes. Was it just a freak accident? I hope it mends soon.
ReplyDeleteI usually wear slippers in the house, I know they're not the most protective footwear but they might have helped a little had I been wearing them.
DeleteMy sympathies, it's easily done. xx
ReplyDeleteMy mum always tells me to be careful not to bang my toes as I dash about here and there, mums definitely know best.
DeleteOh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I've done this myself, getting up too quickly from the couch when one of my kids was crying like they'd hurt themselves, and I sprang up to go to them and slammed my foot into the coffee table leg. Instant cripple!
ReplyDeleteIt's easily done. I've banged my toes many times, you just don't think it will cause much damage. A very good reason for slowing down.
DeleteSorry to hear about this. Hoping to get well soon... Take care:)
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that it doesn't take too long to mend, I'm a bit stuck now that I'm unable to drive and can't walk very well.
DeleteOh my gosh! Isn't that the WORST sound. Hope it heals up right quick for you.
ReplyDeleteThe sound was terrible, I hardly dare look down at my foot. I'm just thankful that it wasn't worse.
DeleteSo sorry about your toe. When you can put pressure on it take the smallest steps you can in order not to limp and hobble, that will help you not get hip and low back pain from all the compensation. Sorry, I can't help it the therapist in me pops out all the time.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the advice, I wouldn't have known that. I'm hoping that it won't be long until I can get around a bit better than I can at the moment.
DeleteBroke my little toe a few years ago on the leg of the bed going to the loo in the dark. I now sleep where I an go straight to the loo from any bed so that I don’t have to come round the end of the bed! When I arrived at work the next day, a colleague had caught her foot in her coffee table and done exactly the same thing!! Enjoy being waited on.
ReplyDeleteIt's so easily done, I often bang my toes on the bed as I'm walking round it. What a coincidence both yourself and your colleague breaking your toes in the same way at the same time.
DeleteOhhhhh mercy! A broken toe! Yes, we do have to be much more careful, of bumping into furniture, "now." :-) And so much *trouble,* can be the result of hurrying. At any age.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the old saying; "Haste makes waste." Actually, haste, can more more, than just 'waste.' It can _hurt_.
So sorry... But do do what you were told. It will heal quicker that way.
And MEREKNITS has such good advice above. We have to be aware, of the problems we can cause, by compensating for not being able to walk properly!!! Such important advice.
It's common sense, when we think of it. But we don't always pay attention to common sense.
Hugs......
You're right, nothing good usually comes from rushing around. I've rested this weekend with my foot elevated, I'm hoping that it won't take long until I'm able to get about on it a bit better.
DeleteMEREKNITS, such good advice!!!!! About the problems we can cause, by overcompensating.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually common sense, but we don't always pay attention to common sense, do we? :-)
Thank you for reminding all of us!
I'd never thought about this until Meredith mentioned it but I shall definitely take her advice.
DeleteOh no! I'm sorry to read this Jo. I hope you're soon on the mend. It sounds very painful as well as a flipping inconvenience for you. X
ReplyDeleteIt's not too bad if I'm not walking on it but very painful when I do. I just hope it mends quickly.
DeleteOooooh ouch, painful sorry to state the obvious lol.I stubbed my foot on the bed the other day that bl***y hurt too.Good Luck with the healing.Cuddles for Archie.xxxx
ReplyDeletePieces of furniture, they've got a lot to answer for. It's easily done.
DeleteOh my goodness, Jo. I hope your toe heals quickly! Take care of yourself!
ReplyDeleteMick's being very attentive and fetching and carrying for me. I'm just hoping that it mends quickly and that I'm not hobbling about for too long.
DeleteOh dear, poor you. Let's hope it feels better soon. What a nuisance for you though, although you'll be rocketing through your stash making loads of woolly things.
ReplyDeleteI must say that I don't feel quite so bad sitting and knitting at the moment, definitely less guilty.
DeleteOh no! I hope you are feeling a little better now, didn't they give you crutches at the hospital? On the positive side you can get plenty of knitting time in and enjoy being waited on for a few days :-)
ReplyDeleteI didn't get any crutches, they don't really do much with toes, well, there isn't a lot they can do really, is there? I'm enjoying resting up though, lots of knitting and reading time.
DeleteOh you poor thing, hope you feel better soon and take advantage of the waiting on for a few days.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it will feel much better once the bruising goes down. It's nice to have some guilt free knitting time at the moment though.
DeleteSo very sorry to read about this Jo.
ReplyDeleteI do hope it gets better soon and you are on the mend.
It can't be easy having to hobble arounds but sounds as if Mick is looking after you well.
Reading through the comments above Mereknits has some good advice :)
Take care, my good wishes.
All the best Jan
I'm sure it won't be too long until it starts to feel better. It's still sore when I walk at the moment but I suppose rest will take care of that.
DeleteHi Jo,hope you are not in too much discomfort.thanks for popping by my blog.We are just 10 mins away by car from Perranporth.xx
ReplyDeleteIt's not too bad, though I've got a very attentive family so they're helping me out and doing lots of fetching and carrying. We've been to Perranporth a couple of times, we had a lovely pub meal there.
DeleteLooks painful Jo hope it heals soon and that you find plenty to keep you busy while it is.
ReplyDeleteI've got plenty to keep me occupied, I wonder how long I can drag it out.
DeleteOuch, hearing it crunch sounds dreadful, you poor thing. What better excuse to get lots of knitting and reading done, hope the pain eases sooner rather than later xx
ReplyDeleteI'm finding that the pain comes and goes now, some times it's worse than others. The noise when I banged it made me think I'd done something much worse but I'm glad I hadn't.
DeleteEeek! I bet you felt sick when you heard that crunching!!! Take it easy gal, let everyone run around after you, and get better soon.xxx
ReplyDeleteIt was a sickening noise, I was quite worried to look down at my foot and see what I'd done. I'd hate to hear what it would sound like if I'd done something worse.
DeleteI'm so sorry you broke your toe Jo!! I KNOW that hurt!!! I broke my leg and my arm in the past, I totally know your pain! I hope you heal up and feel better soon xx
ReplyDeleteI've broken a toe in the past but never any other bone. I know how bad a toe feels so I dread to think how painful it would be to break a much larger bone in the body.
DeleteWay behind ... whats new - ouch! poor you... hope its healing well by now. x
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking it's getting better and then end up back at square one with it. I think I keep aggravating it by walking on it but that can't be helped.
