The Mercury Socks pattern by Kim Drotar has been very popular but I've only just got round to knitting it myself. It was a change knitting a lace pattern. I used Giddy Yarns in Helen's Dorothy colourway. It was a dream to knit with but in hindsight I should have used a contrast for the heels and toes as the colour pools quite a bit where the stitch count changes. A yarn will only provide a constant pattern whilst the number of stitches remain the same, once the number of stitches change the colours in the yarn will work up in a different way.
I love this yarn, inspired by Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, it contains the blue and white of her dress, the red of her ruby slippers and speckles of green and yellow to represent the Emerald City and the yellow brick road, so I've decided to call these socks my Dorothy In Oz socks. I think the yarn would look really pretty knit up in a plain stocking stitch too.
These are another pair of socks which are for me, I'm getting quite selfish with my sock knitting just lately, I think that's what becomes of knitting sixteen pairs of socks in one year and only two of those pairs finding their way to my own sock drawer. It will be nice to have some brand new pairs of socks to warm my feet this winter.
these are gorgeous! I have not knitted one pair of socks in 8 months - considering i knocked out a pair once a month or so last year.... finally got my knitting mojo back these hols - started and finished a Rattan Shawl and now making good progress on the nurmilintu shawl.
ReplyDeleteI love knitting socks, I've always got at least one pair on the needles. Glad your knitting mojo has come back, I've knitted a Nurmilintu in the past, it's a nice relaxing pattern, perfect to rekindle your knitting mojo.

DeleteI still have my second sock to finish, I'm not so crafty in the hot weather and I have an itch to do some machine sewing patchwork.
ReplyDeleteI've been doing some knitting lately but it can get quite hard when my hands are warm. I think sewing might be a better idea.

DeleteSixteen pairs in a year - wow! I love the lace pattern - I've not tried that yet but am looking forward to doing some different patterns once the current pair of socks are off the needles.

One thing I will mention is that I used Drops Alpaca yarn and had to buy a third 50g ball in order to finish it as I ran out towards the end, though I didn't do a swatch so my gauge was probably out. DeleteLovely socks, I am currently on the 3rd pair of shortie socks ready for next year. The cooler weather has allowed some woolly activity at last. None for me so far though.
ReplyDeleteI've found it quite hard to knit at times in this weather, wool isn't the best thing to be holding in the heat. I knit shortie socks for other people but I prefer socks a little higher up the leg for myself.
