All-In-One Baby Top

Knowing that one of Eleanor's friends is expecting a baby has given me the opportunity to do a little bit of baby knitting. I used to knit lots of baby garments when I was in my teens. Coming from a large extended family and being the youngest cousin, there always seemed to be someone who was pregnant that I could knit for, but I haven't done any baby knitting for quite some time now.

I already had a ball of Hayfield Bonus DK in my stash so I looked for a pattern that would suit this yarn and I came up with the All-In-One Baby Top by Marianna Mel, a free pattern on Ravelry. As well as it being such a pretty little jacket, it was the All-In-One bit that attracted me as I hate sewing up seams. Knowing that Lucinda has already had a scan and found out that she's expecting a girl, I'd have probably gone for a different colour had I got a choice, but lemon was all that I had in my stash and I really wanted to get it knit up as I knew that Eleanor was seeing her before she went to London last week and would be able to give it to her then.

It didn't take much yarn so I knit the matching hat too, the pattern calls for this to be knit flat but I found modifications on Ravelry to enable me to knit it in the round.

Lucinda was really pleased when Eleanor gave her the little gift so I may have to knit something else now for when the baby's born. I really enjoy knitting things for babies as they're so small, they don't take very long at all.

  1. I love using the thinner yarns, they always look so perfect.

    1. DK is the thickest yarn I use usually, and more often than not I use 4 ply. It feels weird going back to 4 ply after DK though.

  4. Lovely Jo & I've not knitted many little things of late either. Our two youngest grandies will be 11 this year. Oh, that is scary!!! I suppose I could do some for charity. Take care.

    1. Time certainly passes in the blink of an eye. I've knit baby garments for charity in the past, there always seems to be appeals for baby garments from various organisations.

    1. I must admit that I do like lemon but I'd have probably gone for something different if I were buying the yarn rather than using yarn from my stash.

  6. They are so sweet. Eleanor's friend is sure to love them. Knitting for babies is such a treat. I just don't have any to knit for at the moment. X

    1. It's a long time since I've had a baby to knit for so I jumped at the chance of knitting a little something. It's a lovely pattern.

  7. It's so pretty. I wish I'd been a better crocheter (or a knitter at all!) when my babies were small, I would have really enjoyed making things for them. How nice to know a new baby on the way, I really wish I did.

    1. I've knitted things for so many babies over the years but I had my own children at a time when I wasn't doing any knitting at all so I never made anything for them as babies or children. I'm making up for it now though.

  9. Adorable! I've never knit for a baby, but I can see the appeal - fast to knit and SO incredibly cute! I'm with you - I much prefer a seamless knit to one with seams.

    1. There's so many lovely patterns to choose from but I always look for ones to knit in one piece as I hate seaming so much. I love knitting baby garments, there just aren't that many people I know who have babies these days so I jumped at the chance to knit something for Eleanor's friend.

  11. Awww such a lovely handknitted pressie, I bet she loved it.
I have knitted that lovely little cardi so many times for the local neo natal unit, they use them for the babies who need to have drips into their arms as they keep them warm but the arms are free.

    1. Eleanor said that Lucinda's mum's a crocheter so I think she's someone who will appreciate handmade gifts. It's such a lovely pattern, very easy and quick and I can see why it's perfect for babies who have drips in their arms.

    1. I don't think there's as many hand knits around these days as it's so cheap to buy things but I don't think you can beat them, I love to see babies in hand knitted clothes.
