Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Eleanor's had long hair for a long time now. Whenever she went to the hairdressers she always asked for a minimal amount cutting off so imagine my surprise when she told me she was having it cut short.

It turns out that she'd heard about The Little Princess Trust, a charity who provide real hair wigs free of charge to children and young adults up to the age of 24, who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses. She decided that she'd like to donate her hair to this organisation who help others less fortunate than herself.

Hair has to be at least 7 inches in length so I think Eleanor's ponytail ticks that box.

She actually had more than 17 inches cut off as once the ponytail had been cut she wanted it shorter still. I think her new shorter style suits her very much and Eleanor's very happy with it.

The Easter holidays finish for Eleanor on Sunday. We're having a girly day out in Leeds together today where we'll do some shopping and have some lunch, tomorrow night she's working at her little bar job that she has when she's home and then on Sunday she goes back to university. The house will be very quiet again.

  1. I think Eleanor's new hairstyle looks lovely - and what a lovely thing to do (when I saw the blog title and picture I wondered if that's what she'd chosen to do)
My friend's daughter died of cancer a month after her 17th birthday. Having a wig from the LPT was a huge boost for her when she was ill.
    Well done Eleanor! :)

    1. How sad. I'd never heard of this charity before Eleanor told me about it but it's good to hear a positive story of how it has helped a young person. Losing your hair can be a traumatic experience and even more so when you're a teenager.

  2. What beautiful hair Eleanor has, and the shorter style really suits her. And what a lovely gesture to donate to the Princess Trust.
Enjoy your day out in Leeds. You won't have long to miss her as she'll be back for the Summer before you know it. X

    1. I think Eleanor will find her shorter hair style easier to manage, her long hair was often tied back and took time to wash and dry. This last term is only eight weeks and I'm sure that'll fly past.

  5. Well done, that takes courage to chop your hair off like that after taking so long to grow it and look after it. She looks lovely with it shorter and it will soon grow again.

  16. What a lovely thing to do. It makes such a difference and is an easy and free way to support a charity. I've often thought that hair must go to waste sometimes and wonder why such charities don't contact local salons, and team up.
Eleanor looks lovely with shorter hair, it's a beautiful colour. When I went short I just kept going shorter, so prepare yourself!

    1. There's so many different ways to help out a charity and as you say, many of them are free. It would definitely be a good idea for these charities to team up with salons, the stylists where Eleanor had her hair cut didn't know about The Little Princess Trust and crowded round to watch her have it cut. I'm not sure whether she'll go shorter still now or let it grow again, time will tell.

  17. Please tell Eleanor, as someone who has been through chemo and had to wear a wig for months, her wonderful gift of her hair to help another is truly amazing, we all know how long it takes to grow. She will give someone a reason to smile again. She is a very pretty young lady and her new hair style is stunning.

It's a shame more people don't know about it really, I only heard about it when Eleanor told me. Unfortunately, she died before it fell out so she didn't actually go through it but I know she was terrified about it. It's a horrible thing for anyone to go through but I can't imagine how a young person would feel about it. I hope Eleanor's hair helps in some small way.

  29. Beautiful Eleanor. I think you are both brave & giving at the same time, to have all your gorgeous hair cut first & then to give it to someone who needs it. I remember meeting you & thought your hair was so long then, but it must have grown a lot since then for it to be 17". Well done, enjoy the rest of the weekend at home & all the best for your return to Uni. Take care.

  33. Well done to your daughter. My great niece has been growing her hair to donate to this cause since she saw a programme about it on TV when she was about four years old. She's nine now and it's nearly long enough so hopefully she can donate this summer. I'm just impressed that she's stuck to this for so long at her young age.

  34. Hey Jo,
An amazing thing for your daughter to do. When my late mother in law had cancer, losing her hair was very difficult for her. She felt as if she'd lost her femininity, and as a very private person it was also a very visual advert of her illness. Her wig enabled her to recover some semblance of self esteem.
