Homeward Bound

It's an exciting day for me, my family are all coming home. This only happens once or twice a year at the moment so it's feeling a little like Christmas for me today.

Daniel has some holiday left to take before the end of March so he's got all next week off work. He lives in Surrey, it's quite some distance from us here in Yorkshire so Mick went down yesterday and stayed overnight. His company have a branch in Basingstoke which is about half an hour from where Daniel lives so Mick's working there today and then bringing Daniel and his girlfriend home after they've all finished work. They haven't decided how long they're staying yet but it will definitely be at least a week. The Easter weekend is tagged onto their week off so they've only had to take four days holiday from work and yet they're getting a good, long break.

They're breaking their journey back up the motorway in Nottingham to pick Eleanor up from university. She doesn't break up for Easter until next Thursday but she hasn't got any lectures after today until Tuesday so she's coming home for the weekend and Mick will take her back on Monday. He'll then go back and pick her up again on Thursday as she's got a fortnight off for Easter.

It's a good job that Mick's also got some of his annual leave from work left to take. He's off now until after Easter so it's going to be lovely having all the family home, though as well as spending time together, there's other things they've got planned too. I just might not be around in Blogland as often as I usually am.

Mick buys those little packets of cereal when they're on offer as they're handy to take to work for breakfast. He doesn't like Cornflakes though so all the packets have mounted up until I got enough to make some Easter nests. I always used to make these when the kids were young and who's to say you ever grow out of them?

  1. it does not matter what age you are, it's always great to go home to mum's cooking, and childhood treats are the best.

  2. I hope you have a lovely time with your family Jo. It's so nice to have them altogether something that rarely happens in our house these days. I used to love making these little cakes with the kids when they were little. No little people to make them for anymore.

    1. There's no little people here now either, that's why the big people are getting them. I don't see Daniel very often at all these days so I'm definitely going to make the most of having everyone at home together.

    1. I know that Eleanor's looking forward to coming home. She's settled really well at uni and hasn't really been bothered about being away from home but she's had a few tough situations to deal with this term and I think she just wants to get home to her family for a while. It'll be good to have everyone together.

  4. Great to have the family together, we missed our trip to see our daughter, should have flown out yesterday, but life interfered. Hoping to see her this Fall.

    1. I can't resist mini eggs, it took all my resolve to add them to the chocolate nests and not pop them in my mouth. I've heard that they've set off on their way home now so just a few more hours to wait.

  9. Hope you all have a nice time together. Cornflake cakes are always nice, enjoy. Adults and children seem to love both them and the rice Krispie version. Cathy x

    1. Mick eats the Rice Krispies so there were only Cornflakes to hand, though I like both versions too.

  14. How wonderful - it's a holiday for everyone! And those nests do look yummmy - very Easter :) I used to do that all the time when I worked - tagging holiday days onto weekends or long weekends. It would feel as if I had several "holidays" each year instead of only one or two.

    1. Taking a few extra days holiday can turn a bank holiday weekend into a holiday worth taking. I'm really pleased that both Mick and Daniel have saved a few days holiday this year, it's going to be a lovely week having everyone at home together.

  17. Enjoy your wonderful time with your family, great everyone could get together and catch up. Its difficult when everyone is far apart. You will have to collect and save up a few hugs. I used to make the kids their Easter eggs as they could only have carob chocolate due to allergies, haven't made those in a few years, as now of course, its much easier to get alternative ones. xcx

    1. I'm so pleased that Eleanor managed to get home for the weekend too, she won't be here for the most part of next week but at least we've all had a few days all together. I can imagine how hard it was for people with allergies a few years back, it's good that 'free from' food is more widely available now.

  19. This is a bit late, but hope the weekend has gone well with all the family there & I think your weather has been kinder this week. With J here & keeping in touch with family/boyfriend back in UK, we get your weather updates all the time. She was in for a shock this morning, as it was only 7deg, howling wind & pouring rain, so I drove her to work instead of letting her ride her pushbike. OK, enjoy & take care.

    1. It's been a lovely weekend. Eleanor goes back to uni today but she'll be home again on Thursday. The weather over the weekend has been much warmer and sunny, so that's been nice. The temperature reached double figures, though I think we're in for a cold snap again soon.

  21. Enjoy the time with your family. We've all 4-5 days off school and university, but two of us have many assignments due within the next week after Easter, and the 19 year old works on Easter Sunday too so it might be one big meal on Good Friday or something and the rest of the time is do you own thing! I do like holidays, but my family rarely celebrated much. It's not a huge priority for me I guess... and I barely see my teens with uni and their studies and work too!

    1. Eleanor's got an exam when she's back in uni tomorrow but she's already done plenty of revision for it so she feels prepared. I think it's good for her to have some downtime in between all the studying she does as I know she works very hard when she's at uni.
