We woke up to a beautiful sunny day last Thursday so we thought we'd make the most of it and head off to the coast.
We love the Yorkshire coast, it's a wonderful place to be on a sunny day.
Our first port of call was Whitby, home of Whitby Abbey, Bram Stoker's inspiration for Dracula. We never head for the beach at Whitby, there's so many interesting shops both in the new part of town and along the older streets, it's the perfect place for a wander.
Not the best picture because of the reflections on the glass, but I couldn't resist taking a photo of this crocheted teddy bear sitting on a deck chair in a shop window.
After a good stroll round we decided to head on up the coast to Sandsend where's there's a fabulous dog friendly beach.
Although it was lovely and sunny, there was a bit of a breeze, so I thought it would be the perfect day to get number 11 crossed off my 50 Before 50 list and Fly a kite. We'd bought one when we were on holiday in Lincolnshire but never got the chance to use it, here was my opportunity.
Mick and Eleanor looking very puzzled, it's a good job I knew what I was doing.
I had to show them how it was done, though Eleanor says she hasn't laughed so much for a long time after seeing me running down the beach trying to get the kite airborne.
I managed it though, up it went and up it stayed.
The kite casting its shadow on the beach.
Archie was more than happy to amuse himself whilst we were busy with the kite. He loves spending time on the beach, he has a little paddle, plays with other dogs and dries off whilst sunbathing.
I think it took it out of him on Thursday though, he was a rather tired dog in the car on the way home and he slept very well that night.
The journey home takes us over the North York Moors where I just managed to catch the tail end of the train which had recently set off from Goathland station.
It's a stunning area.
The scenic route certainly beats motorways.
It was another lovely day out and it was actually sunny enough for me to catch the sun on my face. Mind you, I only have to look at the sun and I turn a nasty shade of pink.
My Friend lives in Scarborough and she has taken me all over Yorkshire when I've visited her. We had fish and chips at the famous restaurant in Whitby and browsed the 'Jet' shops up and down the lanes. We also did the Victor Meldrew tour up into the woodlands. Beautiful countryside.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful part of the UK, I can understand why it's called God's Own County, I'm very lucky to live here. The Dalby Forest is a lovely area, Archie enjoys taking walks there.
DeleteHey Jo,
ReplyDeleteIt does look like a grand day out. And I never knew you were a fellow Cav owner. Aren't they adorable dogs?
Leanne xx
I did a lot of research before we got a dog, but for what we wanted, the Cav breed kept coming up. I didn't know much about them before then but they're such beautiful dogs with a gentle and loving nature. We definitely made the right choice in getting Archie.
DeleteA beautiful area in which to spend such a beautiful day. Whitby is a fascinating little town and Sandsend beach a great place to fly your kite. Happy memories for you all. X
ReplyDeleteWe love this part of the coast, spending time in Whitby before moving on to the sands at Sandsend, such a great day out.
DeleteSounds fun, we have to start thinking about getting out more.
ReplyDeleteWe had a lovely time last week getting out and about on Mick's second week of holiday. We don't tend to do so much on a weekend at this time of year as Mick plays cricket every Saturday.
DeleteWhat a lovely day out & we always spend time in Whitby when over, & love strolling around the town, up the steps, out on the pier & visiting the wonderful quilt shop, when she is open. We used to fly kites when we were little, & did with our kids & have also done with the grandkids. It's great once you get them up. Take care.
ReplyDeleteWhitby's a lovely seaside town with lots to see. I remember flying kites when I was a child but my lot have never been interested despite me often suggesting it.
DeleteWhat a lovely day out.. and gorgeous views on your journey home.
ReplyDeleteThe North York Moors are just beautiful, it's a lovely journey home, sometimes calling in at Goathland on the way.
DeleteLovely post and pictures. It looks and sounds like you had a most enjoyable day.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, kite flying brings back some happy memories although mine was never as fancy as yours. I bet you had great fun flying it. xx
Flying a kite was something a little different to what we usually do when we visit the coast. It may look fancy but it cost us just £1.99, having fun doesn't have to cost the earth. We did have lots of laughs.
DeleteWhat a wonderful day out! I think I've flown a kite before, but am not altogether sure as it would have been way back when I was a kid. We actually have a kite that was gifted to our kids a few years ago that has never been used as there are too many trees for it to get caught on in our area. Perhaps one day we'll go to a park and give it a try.
ReplyDeleteWe had such a laugh trying to get it to fly, lots of fun. We left it behind when we left for a little boy and his dad to play with so they'll, hopefully, have had fun with it too.
DeleteI love to fly kites, use to do it with my students every year.
ReplyDeleteIt's lots of fun. My two were never bothered when they were young even though I often suggested it.
DeleteWhat a fabulous day out. And what fun to fly a kite, I've not done that since I was a child
ReplyDeleteIt was a lovely day out. Having a bit of sunshine really makes a difference and doing something different to usual was lots of fun, we all enjoyed it.
DeleteI love flying kites! So much fun. I'm no good at it, but I enjoy it anyway. The beach looks beautiful, what a nice day out. So nice to see Mick and Eleanor too. Glad you had a good outing!
ReplyDeleteWe love the beach at Sandsend, it's just undergone improvements involving the construction of stepped sea defences as it was at risk of coastal erosion, and better public access stairs have also been installed. It looks all the better for its facelift.
DeleteIt looks like a great day out, Jo. It's always lovely to see Archie. :o)
ReplyDeleteAs you know, Archie loves his days out as much as we do, especially to the beach. He had a lovely time.
DeleteBeautiful. That's made up for all the rain.
ReplyDeleteThe second week of Mick's holiday, while we were at home, was definitely better, weather wise, than the first.
DeleteLove your kite, it looks like a great day out for you all.
ReplyDeleteWe all enjoyed the day out, it was nice to get on the beach.
DeleteWe were on the North Yorkshire Moors last Thursday and visited Goathland or rather passed through it too. We never got as far as we Whitby though. Haven't they set up a new park and ride scheme? I do like the kite.
ReplyDeleteWhat a coincidence, we may have passed each other on the road. I never noticed the park and ride, we always tend to park by the harbour in Whitby.
DeleteWhat a wonderful day out!!! Glad you crossed another item of your bucket list, that is one fabulous kite, well done you, I doubt I would have managed to get it airborne. Such a cute teddy, and just look at sweet little Archie, what a great life he has.xxx
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoyed our day, as did Archie, he'd hate to miss out on a day at the beach. Kite flying was fun, it's years since I've had a go.
DeleteJo, such a beautiful place to visit. I am in love with that teddy bear, so sweet. Hugs to you.
ReplyDeleteWe're lucky to have such wonderful places nearby. I couldn't resist taking a photo of the teddy, so cute sitting in the deck chair.
DeleteIt's been too long since i flew a kite! Thanks for reminding me - and sharing all of your lovely photos 😃
ReplyDeleteIt's years since I flew a kite last but I still remembered how to do it, it was a lot of fun.
DeleteWhat a lovely day out and a beautiful, colourful kite, sounds great fun was had by all... Archie included in that. I haven't been further than Whitby xx
ReplyDeleteWe all enjoyed the day out, I love it when we get to spend days with Eleanor still. Sandsend isn't much further than Whitby but definitely worth a visit, it's a lovely little place.
Deleteyour post brought back some happy memories of our visit to Whitby and the North York Moor Railway, we travelled along to Goathland (DH is a steam train fan).
ReplyDeleteKite flying is such fun, we have one that has winnie the pooh on it and get such funny looks when on the beach.....who cares ... free fun!
It's such a beautiful area around the moors. I'm sure we'll fly kites again now that they all know what it's about, we had such a laugh trying to get it to fly.
DeleteGood for all of you to get out and about on this sunny day and have a fabulous time. Love the kite, great colours in it.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
We made the most of the week Mick had at home, we had much better weather than the week before when we were away.
DeleteThe fresh sea air is good for us and our little furry friends!
ReplyDeleteAnother great challenge ticked off your list. I love
flying a kite. Happy outdoors fun.
I did have a laugh reading about Eleanor laughing at you though!
Lisa x
I can't blame Eleanor laughing, she even took a video of me on her phone which I made her delete straight away. We had such a lovely day and lots of laughs, which what it's all about afterall.
