Dalby Forest

First of all, I'd just like to thank everyone for their comments and kind words on my last post. Eleanor was very touched by the congratulations and she also would like to thank you all. She's been in touch with her Biology tutor and is exploring her options. She's not quite so down in the dumps any more as she now realises that with a lot of hard work she can still achieve her goals.

Getting back to our holidays, I thought I'd show you the photos I took when we visited Dalby Forest.

Dalby Forest is at the south of the North Yorks Moors and only about six miles away from Pickering where we were staying. There's walking trails to suit all abilities, different distances and different difficulties, as well as bike trails. You can hire bikes and there's also Go Ape, the tree top adventure with zip wires and Tarzan swings. Needless to say, we didn't bother with that.

We visited a few times. We were able to borrow a pass from the company who lets the cottage we were staying in, which saved us quite a bit on parking. One of the trails we walked was the Ellerburn Trail.

We chose the longer route, 4.5km or 2.8 miles, it didn't take too long and was a nice walk after a day out elsewhere.

Archie loved it here, he could come off his lead and have a good sniff around.

He was even good when we did a lakeside walk, a stern No and he stayed on land.

You never know what you mind find in the forest though, look who we came across, The Gruffalo.

It's so peaceful here, we only passed a handful of people while we were walking and it's a brilliant place to take dogs. There's places for picnics too as well as a cafe and play areas and adventure playgrounds so you can really make a day of it.

  1. A Gruffalo? Who knew! Did they have the mouse as well, because he's even scarier!

    1. I didn't see the mouse, though he may have been hiding, or perhaps Archie scared him away. On second thoughts, Archie would have been the one who was scared.

  2. Looks a lovely place to have a walk. I do think it good when there are well worn trails to follow and it clearly states the length.

You all had a lovely day and Archie looks very happy.

    All the best Jan

PS Hope Mick enjoyed his birthday.

    1. It was really helpful that we knew how far we'd be walking and how long it'd take us before we set off. Some of the trails are so well worn that they're suitable for pushchairs so it's a great place for families. Mick did enjoy his birthday thank you. He sometimes takes the day off work but having just gone back after our holiday and another week off looming, he didn't bother this time. We went out for a meal last night though so that was nice.

    1. It was a toss up whether Archie preferred Dalby Forest or the beach. It's a great place if you've got a dog as they can come off their lead and it's a safe environment for them. We visited a few times at the end of the day, it was so peaceful and Archie enjoyed the walks we did.

  5. Well, I don't suppose that Archie was expecting to meet Gruffalo on his walk! Glad to hear that Eleanor is feeling a bit better now. xx

    1. I think it was us who was more taken aback at meeting the Gruffalo, totally unexpected. Eleanor's got some different options to consider so I'm sure she'll make the right choice for her.

  7. I would have loved to seen the Gruffalo!
I like the idea of different trails so you can vary your visits.
Well done Archie for staying out of the water!

    1. It's good knowing how far each trail is and how long it will take you. We visited after days out so we didn't want to be walking for too long, we could choose a walk which was appropriate. Archie loved it, though I thought he might have been in the water, there were a few close shaves.

  8. Lovely, and although I've heard of it, I've never been. Seems Archie thoroughly enjoyed the holiday too. I'm enjoying seeing your vacation pics. Take care.

  9. I love the Gruffalo! My kids liked the movie. This looks like a nice place to spend the day hiking around. I love that photo of the water with the trees on either side, reflecting in the water. Just beautiful.

    1. There's some beautiful scenery and so many different walks that you get to see something different each time you choose a different trail. You could spend hours here, though we usually chose to visit at the end of the day after we'd had the day out elsewhere.
