You may remember my post back at the beginning of September about A Birthday In Skeggy. What I didn't tell you in that post was that I splashed out on some new yarn whilst I was there.
We were walking along the front when I caught sight of a small craft market down a side street. There were a few stalls selling all manner of crafts and to the side was a yarn and haberdashery shop. I couldn't resist going in to peruse their wares, I couldn't just pass by, and I'm so glad that I did as they were selling Stylecraft Special DK at the bargainous price of £1.35 per ball. To let you know just how much of bargain this was, the same yarn which I bought from The Fent Shop in Skipton when I went to Yarndale was £2.00 per ball.
I had a look at the colours they had in stock and a few just jumped out at me. It was the beginning of September, autumn was on its way, and the copper, gold and spice reminded me of the shades of autumn leaves. I couldn't resist. Then a few blues/greens happened to jump in to my basket, turquoise, teal and petrol. To bring everything together I chose stone. I bought two balls of each, it should have cost £18.90 but the friendly shopkeeper let me off the 90p so it cost £18.00.
When I got home and laid the yarn out, I realised that the teal and petrol are very similar and there isn't a great difference between them, so I probably won't use them both together. I'm very happy with the other colours I've chosen though, I think they work well together.
I'm not sure yet what I'm going to make with this, probably another blanket of some sort, and I might yet add more colours to the mix, what do you think?
I'm coming to the end of Eleanor's ripple blanket now, there's only a couple of rows to go and then the border to add. I'm looking forward to starting a new project but what it'll be, I've yet to decide.
Wow, what a total bargain. I haven't even seen it online anywhere near that price. I am hoping that my local yarn shop is going to start selling this brand soon as it is my absolute favourite. In that vein, I must use up more from my stash so I can buy, buy, buy!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it online at that price either, I thought it was an absolute bargain. I do wish I had a local yarn store, there's none around me at all.
DeleteA bargain price and nice warm colours. I look forward to seeing what you make with them. Flighty xx
ReplyDeleteI'm building up quite a stash now, I've still got the yarn which Mick bought me for Christmas to make in to something yet too.
DeleteWhen I was going to my pottery classes a fellow student offered to teach me to knit - when my room is sorted I think I will contact her! I have a lovely chair which I could sit in and knit!
ReplyDeleteI used to knit loads when I was younger but stopped knitting for over twenty years. I'm so pleased I got back in to it, and crochet too of course, they're such relaxing hobbies.
DeleteI will have to go and find this little shop next time we go up to Skeggy, not that we get a chance to go often even if we do live near enough on the doorstep. The colours go really well together but then I am an autumn kind of girl....
ReplyDeleteI wish I'd taken notice of the street it was on. I do know it's open right through the winter though, many shops must close out of season as the shopkeeper made a point of telling me that he'd be there right through the year. It's a shame I don't live closer, I'd be popping in all the time.
DeleteGorgeous colours. We must be spoilt down here because the wool shop I go into at a craft center here sells Stylecraft double knit for £1-29 for 100grms.
ReplyDeleteThe blue wool I put on a couple of posts ago which is 100grms of New Fashion by Woolcraft was £1-29 too! She's very competitive as I've noticed that Asda have started selling Stylecraft at £2 for 100grms!
Can't wait to see the pictures of what you do with it x
I think my favourites are the spice, copper and gold. I can't believe you can get Stylecraft for £1.29, that's a fantastic price, though it does show how much the mark up is in shops which sell it for £2 plus.
DeleteI wouldn't have been able to resist either! I have some of those same colors now too, just got them in my most recent order. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteI love the range of colours which Stylecraft do, they've just added some new ones and they're rather lovely.
DeleteThey are gorgeous colours, what a bargain! I paid £1:85for my last lot. I bought some unlabelled 100gm balls for £1 each from the shop across the road from the Fent Shop, its knitting up lovely and it looks and feels like Stylecraft. We are going to Skeggy at the beginning of December, i might have to persuade hubby to take me to that shop!
ReplyDeleteI know the shop you mean, it seems to have a permanent sale on. I'm glad you're pleased with the yarn you bought, £1 is a bargain just so long as it knits up well. If I'd known about the shop in Skeggy before getting there, I'd have thought up some projects to make the most of the bargain price, as it were, I just picked up some colours I liked without a project in mind. I'll know if I go again though.
DeleteBargainous is the right word, that's fantastic Jo. We'll wait to see what it turns into! I'm terrible for starting a new thing before finishing the last one. The lady in my wool shop says she has two things on the go and won't start a new project before finishing one of the two. Sounds sensible, I think I should try that!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't believe the price when I saw it, I wish I'd bought more now. I used to only have one project on the go when I could only knit but I allow myself to have a knitting project and a crochet one on the go now, though I sometimes slip and have more than two. I've got my On The Go blanket going but I don't count that one as I only allow myself to work on it when I'm not at home.
DeleteLovely colours, I like the contrast of the bluey colours with the oranges :) I'm not too far from Skeggy so maybe I can convince hubbster to take a day trip!
ReplyDeleteI'm not brilliant at putting colours together, but I think these should look good, we'll see. I wish I lived near a yarn shop with such great prices, though on second thoughts, perhaps it's good for my bank balance that I don't.
DeleteJo you are making me want to knit, not sure what, but soon I shall be using my needles, I will have to find a good knitting site, we only have Hobby craft and one expensive shop local.
ReplyDeleteI think it's this time of year, as soon as the nights start drawing in and the curtains get closed earlier, it makes me want to get my knitting out. I've found Wool Warehouse to be good, and Country Crafts have reduced their Stylecraft Special DK to £1.50 for October.
DeleteThanks I will have to try them
DeleteYou're welcome. I've used both of these companies before and been pleased with the service of both.
DeleteGorgeous colours - like autumn trees against a crisp blue sky! Can't wait to see what you decide to make with them!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently making my first item of clothing - a cardigan for my little boy. I do have other things on the go, but I'm forcing myself to finish this before I start or continue with anything else, because I'll never complete it if I let myself get distracted (and if I take much longer he'll be too big for it!). But that Stylecraft is giving me itchy fingers to start another blanket - like you said, I think it's the time of year!
I love making blankets at this time of year as it's lovely to cuddle up in it as you continue to crochet. I've never crocheted an item of clothing but I've knitted plenty of things. Baby clothes are my favourite things to knit as they don't take very long and they're so cute too.
DeleteI think the Stylecraft yarns are tremendous, and the colours you've picked are gorgeous. My friend bought a pack of 25 balls at the Knitting & Stitching show last week for £30.00. I was really tempted but I have a HUGE stash I'm working my way through so didn't buy a pack.

What a great bargain that was, I don't think I'd have resisted. I love all the colours which Stylecraft comes in, they have so many shades of the same colour that you can find exactly what you're looking for.
DeleteThose are great colours, Jo. And to get it all for a bargain price is even better! :o)
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is. I couldn't resist when I saw the price, even though I didn't have any particular project in mind.
DeleteIn awe of the colours you've chosen and can't wait to see what you do with it. I've noticed a couple of books in my Fox Collection catatlogue on different styles of ripples, so will pop you an email. Wish we could get Stylecraft over here and must admit not getting to any wool shops over there. One thing I regret. Have fun and take care.
ReplyDeleteI believe Wool Warehouse delivers to Australia and I don't think the postage is too bad. I'm coming to the end of Eleanor's ripple blanket now, she'll be pleased when it's done as she's waiting anxiously for it.
DeleteBeautiful shades......and the price was great too!
ReplyDeleteI'm really happy with the colours I chose, though I'm wondering if I should add any more to the mix. We'll see.
DeleteGood price and great colors! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm very happy with both. I wish I lived a little closer to Skegness now so that I could pop in to that shop when I needed more Stylecraft, it's a great price.
DeleteYou really did get a bargain with that yarn! The colours are beautiful. At the weekend just past I also bought some Stylecraft DK (at the normal price!) including some of the colours you got. Mine are autumn colours too and I've started a blanket. But I also intened to crochet some leaves and some chillis. Not sure yet HOW to crochet the chillis!
ReplyDeleteThere's so many beautiful colours in the Stylecraft range and even at the normal price, it's good value. I'm sure you'll find a pattern for the chillis, you can find just about anything on the internet.
DeleteMeant to say - I like you colour combination and don't think you should add any more for a blanket.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of some reds or pinks but I'm not sure whether they'll go anyway so I'll probably stick with what I've got.
DeleteThese are lovely colours Jo. I must be the only crafty person in the UK who has not yet tried Stylecraft Special DK! Time to change this I think. I love the blankets and socks in your sidebar, they look cosy and warm. I knit socks, too but it has been a year since I made a blanket. I have been blog hopping this evening and I am glad to have found you here.
ReplyDeleteStylecraft Special DK is my favourite budget yarn, not only does it come in so many shades but it's lovely to work with too. Socks are a favourite thing to knit and I've always seemed to have a blanket on the go ever since learning to crochet a couple of years ago. Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment.
DeleteYes, you definitely got a bargain there didn't you! I love the colours you chose, especially the autumny ones, I think they are the same as the ones I used for my mandalas, and if they are, I just know that you will love them all together. I look forward to seeing Eleanors ripple when it is ready! xx
ReplyDeleteIt was a great bargain, I wish I'd bought more now. I think the colours will work well together, I love the autumny ones too. I'm still plodding on with Eleanor's blanket but the end's in sight now.
DeleteBrilliant bargain, well done and such lovely colours, you just have to buy when you see don't you? I don't have a wool shop anywhere near so everything is mail order, not the same as having a 'feel' though. Looking forward to seeing Eleanor's ripple blanket xcx
ReplyDeleteI definitely had to buy something, even though I didn't have a project in mind. There are yarn shops I can get to but they're a drive away and they don't have great bargains like this.
DeleteLovely mix of autumnal colour and at a bargain price too!
ReplyDeleteLisa x
I really like these colours, and how they work together too. I'm looking forward to doing something with them.
