An End To The Holidays

I don't think we'd done bad with our days out whilst Mick was off work at the end of August. On Bank Holiday Monday we'd visited Helmsley and The White Horse Of Kilburn and on the Wednesday we had an action packed day across the Pennines visiting Another Place, North Meols and Southport. We were all geared up for another day out on the Friday but instead, we ended up first at the doctor's surgery and then at the Surgical Assessment Unit at the hospital as Mick had an abscess under his arm.

The surgeon decided that it needed operating on there and then and wanted Mick to undergo a general anaesthetic, however, Mick talked him in to doing it under local anaesthetic, something he very nearly regretted after he found out how painful it was. No wonder the surgeon had asked him if he was sure, as patients are usually put out for these things and he didn't usually perform them under a local anaesthetic. About six hours later, we were home again but had to return the following morning for more packing to be put in to the wound and the dressing changing.

This scuppered our plans for the end of the week, but not to be outdone, we headed off to Scarborough on the Sunday to make the most of Mick's last day off as he was due back in to work on the Monday.

It was a gorgeous day, just look how blue the sky is behind the castle.

We were lucky, we had huge areas of the beach to ourselves.

We spread some blankets on the sand and soaked up the sea air whilst I read a chapter or two of my book and then we went exploring amongst the rocks.

We found some limpets.

There was lots of seaweed.

Then we did some paddling.

We did a bit of running.

We even did some swimming. Well, Archie did.

Eleanor drew a flower.

Then we did some more paddling.

Archie loves the seaside. I wish we lived a little closer to the coast so that we could visit more often, he'd love to take his walks along the beach.

Our day in Scarborough rounded off our week nicely. We'd had some lovely days out and really made the most of Mick being at home with us.

By the way, Mick was fine after his little op. He had to visit the doctor's surgery regularly for the dressing changing and more packing to be put in to the wound, but it's now healed nicely and is just about back to normal.

  1. What a beautiful day you chose to go to Scarborough, Jo. It looks like Archie had a great time too. Hope Mick is feeling better, I don't blame him re the general anaesthetic, they can take up to a couple of weeks to get out of your system.

    1. It was a gorgeous day, we were so lucky with the weather. Archie always loves it at the seaside, he enjoys running through the rock pools. Mick's much better now, thank you. He didn't fancy having a general anaesthetic but he said the local was so painful that when the surgeon needed to make more cuts and said he'd need to inject more local anaesthetic in to it, he told him to go ahead and cut without as it was the lesser of two evils.

    1. I would have definitely opted for the general, I'm such a wimp. It was a gorgeous day in Scarborough, as you say, we've been very lucky with the weather. I wonder if we'll have to endure a harsh winter.

  5. A nice post and lovely pictures. It certainly looks, and sounds, like you enjoyed yourselves especially Archie. I've been to Scarborough a few times but mostly when the sun hasn't been shining!
I winced when I read about Mick's abscess, and thankful that he's now okay.
    Flighty xx

    1. We do enjoy our days out in Scarborough, it holds many happy family memories for us. Mick's not one to make a fuss when there's anything wrong with him, I can't remember the last day he had off work due to illness. I don't think he could keep quiet any longer when he found the abscess was as large as a tennis ball though. That'll teach him to mention things a little sooner next time.

    1. Thank you. He was certainly relieved when the operation was over. I think he expected the local anaesthetic to numb the pain but didn't expect that it would, in itself, be so painful.

  7. My eyes are watering at the thought of this and I am wincing at the thought of the pain. Mick is a very brave man, obviously made of very stern stuff. So sorry to hear that he had to go through this, but I am glad that he is on the mend now and that it wasn't anything worse. Glad too that you were able to make the most of the time off and do some nice things despite everything. xx

    1. I have to admit that it did make me cringe too. I actually let out a little scream when I saw the abscess on the Friday morning, it was huge. That's another of life's trials out of the way, and we did manage to make the most of the time off he had left, so all was not lost.

    1. Archie loves water. If he can find a puddle on his walk, he'll find it, and roll in it. We had a lovely time in Scarborough, a favourite place for making family memories.

  9. It was lovely reading about the end to Mick's week off and so glad his arm has healed well. I can't believe how most spaniel breeds just love the water so much. We'll be back in Leeds tomorrow so will hopefully meet up again soon. Take care.

    1. Archie really loves water. It can be dry as a bone on his walks but he usually manages to sniff out a puddle, the muddier the better too.

    1. It was a lovely day at the beach, Archie especially enjoys it. We don't seem to have had many day trips to the coast this year for one reason or another so it was nice to finish Mick's holiday off this way.

    1. We really like Scarborough, there's the busy parts but you can usually find some quieter spots on the beach too. It's not too far to visit other resorts along the coast on the same day either.

  13. Ouch! Not the day out originally planned by any stretch of the imagination.
Glad the healing is going well.
The day at the coast looks lovely, I bet Archie slept well dreaming of the sea!

    1. Mick was just glad that he got it all sorted out on the day rather than having to wait for appointments. Archie loved his day out in Scarborough, he was out for the count in the car on the way home.

    1. Mick's fine now, thank you. We used to visit Scarborough more often than we do now as my sister lived there at one point. It's a shame we don't live closer really as Archie would love to take his daily walks on the beach.
