I've had this DVD of the first series of Little House On The Prairie for quite some time, but haven't got round to starting it until just recently.
I must have seen just about all the episodes previously, it was one of my favourite programmes as a child. My mum and I would sit and watch it together. Based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, it tells the story of a family in the 19th century American west. There's usually a moral behind each story, and it's good family viewing.
Another of my favourite programmes from my childhood was The Waltons. I used to love these type of shows about the trials and tribulations of family life from times gone by. Perhaps that's why I liked Lark Rise to Candleford so much, it's another programme along the same lines. I was really sorry when the BBC axed it after just four series.
Do you enjoy these kind of programmes, or do you have a favourite from your childhood?
Oh this take me back! I loved this and never missed an episode of JohnBoy on a Monday evening - how sad that I even know which day it was on!! xCathy
ReplyDeleteThey were both great programmes, weren't they? They don't make them like this anymore.
DeleteI absolutely adored these shows. Apparently I once declared that when I grew up I was going to marry either John Boy or Jim Bob!
ReplyDeleteHa ha. Definitely John Boy. Jim Bob reminded me of a boy who lived down our street, and I most certainly didn't want to marry him.
DeleteThey're what I call comfort viewing! They're not my kind of programmes.
ReplyDeleteFlighty xx
I think they're aimed more at women than men. I know Mick won't watch anything like this, and nor does my dad.
DeleteLittle House on the Prairie was one of my absolute favourites along with the Waltons. I sometimes catch the odd episodes of these two on one of the sky channels which is great especially if I'm the only one at home nothing better than a cup of tea a choccy biscuit or three and an old favourite on the tv. I have to watch them on my own as A) D wouldn't watch them and B) I invariably end up with tears streaming down my face by the end of it. I didn't get to watch Lark Rise to Candleford but I'm sure I would of enjoyed that too.
ReplyDeleteMick doesn't watch anything like this either, and yes, I end up with a tissue in my hand to mop up the tears too. You would love Lark Rise to Candleford, I was so upset when it was axed. I read the book recently too but I didn't enjoy it as much as the series.
DeleteI liked Little House on the Prairie too, watched it with my daughter. Did you know that the man who played Papa Walton died recently?
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that Papa Walton had died. It makes me feel old when the people I grew up watching on tv pass away. Very sad. He'll be fondly remembered in this role though.
DeleteI love watching the Waltons Mike hates it but tough! I used to like watching Little House on the Prairie too as a child but looking back I think I prefered the books.
ReplyDeleteMick doesn't watch anything like this, but that's ok, I like to watch them on my own so that I can have a good cry. I've never read the books, I really should.
DeleteAh yes.....that brings back memories......I used to watch little house on the prairie and the waltons as well
ReplyDeletePure nostalgia. I think I'm going to work my way through Little House On The Prairie and then start on The Waltons.
DeleteOh brilliant! Trip down memory lane. I used to enjoy those programmes too. A little while ago we even had a little competition to see who could name all the Walton's. When everyone is 'home' we always seem to end up with 'goodnight John boy' after saying goodnight to everyone else. Funny how catch phrases stick. Do you remember Watch with Mother, Andy Pandy, Wooden Tops etc (I was too young for Muffin!) I bought a video for my kids when they were young and they loved it, so if anyone asks what is for dinner today......yep, sawdust and hay for dinner today. lol enjoy your DVD and your weekend too.xx
ReplyDeleteHa ha, I think everyone knows "Goodnight, John Boy". My kids have never been interested in these programmes but they still know that phrase. I do remember Watch With Mother. Andy Pandy was my favourite, The Wooden Tops were my sister's favourites, Jenny, Willy and Spotty Dog, the very biggest spotty dog you ever did see. What about Bill and Ben, The Flowerpot Men with Little Weeeeed. It was actually more my sister's and brother's era, I just caught the tail end of it before other programmes such as Trumpton, Camberwick Green and Rainbow were introduced. Happy times.
DeleteI was in love with Michael Landon as Little Jo in Bonanza and tried to dream of him every night! I never watched Little House on the Prairie though.
ReplyDeleteLove from Mum
xx
I remember my mum and dad watching Bonanza, though I never did. It was their must see Sunday viewing.
DeleteI havent seen LHOTP for a long time but I used to love it and watched all the episodes when they were first shown. I dont think there is anything I watch from years gone by but Tony loves Cheers and Goodnight Sweetheart, all of which have been taped and watched more times than I can count!!
ReplyDeleteMick used to watch Cheers, and I've seen Goodnight Sweetheart but it wasn't a must see programme. I think Nicholas Lyndhurst's great through. Eleanor's got the whole box set of Friends. I used to like watching it occasionally but she has it on non stop and I'm sick to death of it now.
DeleteI loved this series! I have all the little house books and re read them from time to time! I haven't read any of the Lark Rise books, but I did really enjoy the series, and wish too that they had continued on with it. We weren't allowed to watch TV really as a child - in fact I'm not sure that we had a TV for many years, but occasionally we had to go to a friend of my grandmothers house after school instead of to my grandmothers and we used to watch Little House when we were there - it was an amazing treat and I loved it!! I also enjoyed watching them when I lived in the US and they were on endless repeat!! xx
ReplyDeleteI really must read the Little House books, I'm sure I'd enjoy them. I don't think tv was such a big deal when we were children as it is in households today. There were certain programmes which we used to watch and then the tv would be switched off.
DeleteI always fancied myself running through those plains! I loved it.
ReplyDeleteIt always seemed like an idyllic existence when I was a child, it must have been a very hard life in reality, though the simplicity of it really appealed to me.
DeleteLittle House was watched by me and my two sisters when we were little. I have often wondered what the books are like. I never watched any of the Candleford series, there was a piece on Woman's Hour this week about the writer Flora Thompson, a new biography is out about her life.
ReplyDeleteLisa x
I can't believe you didn't watch Lark Rise to Candleford, you'd have loved that series. I bet the new biography about Flora Thompson is interesting, I'll have to look out for that.
DeleteGosh this takes me back a few years, I haven't seen it in ages but I did love the Ingalls family. I loved black beauty too, always adored horses.
ReplyDeleteI remember watching Black Beauty but it isn't a programme which has stuck in my mind. I suppose there's so many programmes we've enjoyed over the years if we cast our minds back.
DeleteI remember watching the Little House show when I was very young, it probably ended when I was still small. But I loved the books and we actually have two sets because my husband and I each brought our own into the marriage. He had the Little House cookbook too, and I'm now its proud owner. :)
ReplyDeleteI really should read the Little House books, I'm sure I'd enjoy them. The cookbook sounds interesting, I'll have to see if I can find a copy.
