Worth The Wait

Do you remember me having to buy tulips from the supermarket a couple of weeks ago because they didn't have any daffodils? Well, I had to go in to Leeds on Saturday to get some material which Eleanor needed for her Textiles coursework at school. We went to Kirkgate Market, one of the largest indoor markets in Europe. It also has an outdoor section too. There's a stall there, B&M fabrics, which is really good. Eleanor got everything she needed at a very reasonable price, and the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful.

There's some great flower stalls in the market and I just happened to notice some daffodils as I was passing one, £1 a bunch or £2 for three bunches. I went for three.

Aren't they gorgeous? Definitely worth the wait.

They were tightly in bud when I bought them on Saturday, but as you can see, they've opened out already.

I'm very happy now that I've got my daffodil fix.

  1. Alas you have found the elusive daffodils and it warms my heart to see them.
It is a -30C windchill here today with blowing snow... I can only daydream of daffodils in the garden.
I can imagine their scent is wonderful...

    1. I think daffodils bring with them all that is spring, even when spring seems a long time away. I hope your doors are bolted and the fire is blazing, wrap up warm.

    1. I love the scent of daffodils, it's wafting around the room though I don't think it will last long, market bought flowers don't seem to last as long as those bought from the supermarket.

  3. Gorgeous daffs, and what a bargain price! I havent seen any in the shops around here either, apart for in pots.
Sounds like a good market, it is getting hard to find decent well priced fabric, I remember having to find some when Bella did Textiles. Hope Eleanor is enjoying it! Hope Daniel enjoying uni too.

    1. I usually see loads of daffodils in supermarkets at this time of year but they don't seem to be so widely available this year for some reason. The market in Leeds is brilliant, I remember going there as a small child with my grandma, she always went to a stall which sold baking supplies. They even have a delivery service now so they can compete with supermarkets. Eleanor is really enjoying her Textiles course, she's got her mock GCSE on Wednesday, she's half way through her mocks now. Daniel's loving uni. I think he's coming home this weekend so it'll be lovely to see him. I hope everything's going well for Bella.

    1. I find market flowers are usually reasonable, though they don't tend to last as long as ones bought from the supermarket. The daffodils I've planted in containers are just starting to poke through the soil, though the ones in the ground are a little way ahead.

    1. It certainly is. All the spring bulbs I planted in containers are through, only a matter of time until they're blooming.

    1. I have a bit of a trek to get to my nearest market but the one in Leeds is huge and sells nearly everything you could ever want. There was a time when it wasn't being used as it should and many stalls stood empty but it looks as though things are on the up again now.

  9. I saw some daffs (finally!) for sale today and thought of you Jo when I saw them. I guess that we can quit the tulips for a little bit and switch to our beloved daffs now! xx

    1. At last. I don't know where they've been hiding this year, but I usually see daffodils in the shops before I see tulips, it's been the other way around this year. I hope you bought a bunch, they're such cheery flowers.

  10. Oh, they're beautiful. I'm so ready for daffodils. I'm hoping they'll have them in store finally when I shop this week.

  11. Wonderful! They are so cheery on dull day and a nice reminder that spring may just be round the corner. They look just right in your pretty jug.

    1. They certainly do cheer dull days up. My jug has the saying on it Home Is Where The Heart Is, very appropriate to be filled with daffodils I think.

    1. Eleanor has had to design a dress for her Textiles project. There was a list of certain styles and she chose punk. The top and skirt parts are constructed from different materials and joined with pvc at the waist and the skirt has a red netting underskirt. She's appliqueing the anarchy symbol on to it. Apparently, they get more marks the more techniques are used so she's going to sew French seams. She seems to be enjoying the subject, which I'm pleased about as I'm hopeless at sewing.

  13. I tried to get daffies last time you posted about them but, whilst the supermarket did have them, they weren't worth buying. Maybe your luck in buying good ones will rub off on me and I'll be able to get some too! :o)

    1. I hope you manage to find some decent ones this week, it's funny how they seem quite scarce this year. All mine have opened out fully now and they look fabulous.

  14. What a bargain with the daffs. I have a few in the raised bed outside the back door which look ready to open. I won't mind doing the washing up quite so much when they are open!

    1. I do seem to hit on some bargains when I'm looking for flowers, I'm quite lucky that way. The daffodils in my garden are nowhere near ready to bloom yet, you must have a micro climate in your garden, or else Lancashire has been warmer than Yorkshire. One thing's for sure, they'll certainly cheer you up while you're busy at the kitchen sink.

  15. Just what you need on a grey day like today! Lovely and bright. That is a good market in Leeds, haven't been in a while it was closer when we lived in Otley. The prices are really good and there is a good choice there. Mikayla did textiles so much written work!

    1. I don't go in to Leeds very often so it isn't often that I visit the market, but I usually stop by a flower stall when I do. Eleanor has spent so much time on designs for her Textiles course, I think you need to be a half decent artist for the course too.

  16. That sounds like fun - going around the market with Eleanor and getting the material she needs and the bunch of cheery daffodils. I saw some daffs in our local flower shop that were lovely, but twice the price you paid. I wish I'd bought some as I've been staying in due to a bad cold. Never mind, the indoor pot of mini tulips has been blooming on the kitchen window sill. Hope the mock GCSEs go well - I'm sure they will.

    1. I enjoy markets but we don't have one very near. Leeds is really good as it's huge but I don't go in to Leeds very often. The mocks are nearly over now, thank goodness, but I suppose that Eleanor will be revising non stop now for the real things. Hope you're feeling a bit better now, you definitely need some daffies to cheer you up.

  17. They are lovely Jo. I spotted a bunch of ten for £1.50 in the coop and thought that was a bit expensive so I'll get some from the market on saturday.

    1. Markets seem to be much better value for flowers, though they don't tend to last as long as supermarket bought ones. I hope you manage to track down some reasonably priced daffodils at the weekend.
