Time For Socks

It's official, autumn is definitely here. How do I know? I know when the socks come out of the drawer.

I've tried to hold on to summer for as long as possible, but it's been so cold just lately that I've decided it's time to start wearing socks again. Not only that but I've got a long sleeved top on today too.

I love my hand knitted socks, but of all the pairs I've made, these are the only three I've kept for myself. I think it's time that I got some more on the needles. I'm wearing the pink pair today and my feet are lovely and cosy. Hand knitted socks are pure luxury.

So, autumn for me is when I start wearing socks again. How do you know when autumn's arrived?

  1. When we light the Rayburn - which we did last week. This morning I was fooled by the sunshine and went to Saltburn beach in what I have been wearing for most of the summer - a flimsy cotton skirt, t-shirt and fortunately a fleece. Boy was it breezy! Still it was worth it as Bing excelled in his loveliness and enjoyed playing with the other dogs - result as he is now fast asleep allowing me time to delay housework and sit here reading your blog! lol!

    1. That breeze has certainly got a chill to it, but Bing will have enjoyed his run. Archie loves to go to the beach, it's a shame we live so far away.

  2. Define cold?
Love the socks and they are indeed a luxury although mine are only greys and taupes.
Its Fall here when the trees' leaves begin to turn their vibrant reds, oranges and yellows and the overnight temperatures dip into the single digits like tonight at 6C.
Put a fire in the woodstove and bring out the flannel sheets.

    1. The forecast today is for 12C max and 9C min which is higher than tomorrow. I've been in t-shirts and flip flops until today but I've given in, though I haven't had the heating on yet. I haven't noticed any vibrant colours yet, but the leaves are starting to look washed out so it's only a matter of time

  3. Those socks look really snuggly. I've still to try my hand at making a pair - they still scare me slightly. I've always thought I'd need to use DPNs to knit a pair, but ladies at my stitch club knit socks using a 2 needle method, and some have even used these teeny, tiny circulars from Hiya Hiya. Which method do you use?
It's been blummin freezing here the last couple of days - the heating has not only been turned on, but turned up!!

    1. The socks are very snuggly, it's like walking on air. I started off knitting socks with two needles and seaming them up the back. If you look down my sidebar, the Crofter socks are knit using this method and are great as welly socks. The rest of the socks are knit on DPN's and I have to say that it really is easier than it looks, if I can do it, anyone can. I haven't had the heating on yet, but it's quite nippy on a morning so I might put it on to take the chill off.

  5. The Birkies go back in the box and the boots come out! And the sun starts shining into the living room that it can't reach in summer time because of the leaves!

    1. It's just about boot weather now. I don't get any sun in my living room, it's north facing, which makes it cold even in summer. As soon as autumn comes it's blooming freezing, though I'm probably just soft.

  6. I start lighting candles again - especially those that are scented with lovely Autumn flavours. At the moment I have 'Leaves of Fun' burning in the hall. Jx

    1. That's me too, though I have to confess to lighting candles right through summer too. What a wonderful name for a candle scent 'Leaves of Fun', it conjures up all sorts of images.

  7. As you'll have read in my blog post yesterday I donned an old fleece to go plot pottering, which is the first time in months that I've needed to wear it. Flighty xx

    1. I always find it sad to start covering my arms again, I've left it as long as I could this year, but needs must today, it's just too cold for a t-shirt.

  8. The Virginia creeper that I can see from my kitchen window is varying shades of red, and looks beautiful. It feels as though one day I was barefoot in a summer dress, and the next I was in jeans, a woolly and socks. It's definitely chilly here today, but I hope not to use any form of heat until November at the earliest.

    1. Autumn has definitely crept up on me this year. I'm trying my best to keep the heating off for as long as I can but it was really chilly this morning, I may just give in and put it on for an hour before we get up. The Virginia Creeper sounds lovely, I love to see all the autumn colours but haven't seen any as yet.

  9. Your socks look really nice. I hate to wear anything on my feet but it won't be long before I need socks too. At the very least, I'm going to have to start wearing slippers around the house because I have a lot of tile and it's so cold on your feet in the winter.

    1. I wear slippers the year round as the kitchen is tiled and really cold even in summer. It's nice to get back in to socks again, hand knitted feel really lovely.

  10. Your socks look cozy. Clever you to be able to knit them! I actually enjoy getting back into Autumn clothes and wearing jumpers, thick tights and choosing which scarf from my collection to wear. I can now wear a velvety jacket my daughter bought me earlier in the year. Not so keen on the rain and the wind and the thought that there will be more chillier days than warm, sunny ones.

    1. I think socks look harder to knit than they actually are, once you get used to using DPN's they're really easy. I hate winter clothes and being layered up, it makes me feel really restricted. Enjoy wearing your velvety jacket, I'm sure there'll be plenty of oportunities to give it an airing.

  11. There is, at the tail-end of August, a smell on the morning air (often accompanied by fog), which just smells like autumn. It is a divine, slow, cool and earthy breath over everything, which signals that autumn is here for good. When I smell it, I know!

I love your socks - very nice. I am knitting a cowl, as well as crocheting my ripple blanket (still!).

    Best wishes,

    1. I tend to gloss over any early signs of autumn wanting to hang on to summer for as long as I possibly can, it's only when we're in the grip of it that I allow summer to slip away. I'm on the last bits of my ripple blanket now, it's for Daniel to take to university with him and he leaves in less than a fortnight so I should finish it just in time.

  12. I had to dig out some socks last week but mine aren't as beautiful as yours, Jo. I do sometimes think I should knit myself some but knitting with 4 needles is not my idea of restful knitting so I doubt I'll ever do it.

    1. You could always knit some on two needles and seam them. I quite enjoy knitting on four needles, it beats having to sew things up which is my pet hate.

  13. Autumn for me is when the days are warm but the nights are cool. Great sleeping weather. Windows open and breezes flow through the house. Right now the breeze is a little chilly so I may have to do some closing before nightfall. But this is my favorite time of the year. I love the way the air changes. It feels crisper and cleaner. Love your socks. Seeing all the wonderful knitted socks makes me wish I could knit!

    Hugs,
    Sharon

    1. Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment. We've got more than a breeze here at the moment, gusts of wind. There's a real chill in the air now, it feels as though winter is on the way rather than autumn. It's never too late to learn to knit, I only learnt to crochet a couple of years ago.

  14. Are they hard to make Jo, as my feet get really cold. Yours look so lovely and cozy. You are very clever.

    1. The hardest this was learning to use four needles, but once you've done that, it's a doddle. I actually prefer using four needles to two as there's no sewing up to do.

  16. Hi Jo, You are so right, it is sock weather, cold, blustery and rainy - very very windy!! I used to use a circular needle and found that tricky, well done on using four!! Hope all is well with University leaving!! Mine has left the nest... but all is well. Karen :o)xxxxx

    1. The wind's died down today, thank goodness. It's still sock weather though. I've never used a circular needle but I'd like to have a go at a shawl so I suppose I'll have to bite the bullet and give it a go. Daniel heads off to university next weekend, it's all go at the moment getting ready for the move, they need so much stuff to take with them. I'm sure it'll be fine once he's off.
