What We Got Up To On A Rainy Day In Cornwall

We only had one day of rain while we were on holiday in Cornwall. Luckily, I had something already planned to while away a couple of hours for Eleanor in the event of a day without sunshine.

Whilst looking on the internet before our holiday, I came across The Sculpture Workshop. I'd never seen anything like this before, and I knew it would be something which Eleanor would be keen to have a go at. I wasn't wrong.

Luckily, there were vacancies on the day we wanted to go. The two hour session started at 10am, and there were another two girls there of a similar age to Eleanor, so they all chatted along as they worked.

Richard who runs the workshop really put them at their ease, and Eleanor said that he was a great teacher. They certainly made some impressive sculptures.

It's an activity for any age, and you get to keep the sculpture at the end of the session.

I think she did really well with it and I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who finds themselves in the area.

While Eleanor had her sculpture session, Mick and I hotfooted it in to Wadebridge. Last year, we came across a yarn shop which just happened to sell Stylecraft Special DK, my value yarn of choice, and it was only £1.50 per 100g. I had to go back again this year to see if it was still such a bargain, and although the price had increased to £1.60, it's still much cheaper than I've found it elsewhere.

I bought another five balls of the colours I'm using in Daniel's ripple blanket to make sure that I don't run out.

I also bought two balls of each of six colours which Eleanor has chosen for a ripple blanket she wants me to make for her.

I picked up a couple of balls of Stylecraft Craft Cotton. I usually use Pegasus Craft Cotton for dishcloths but I thought I'd give the Stylecraft a try.

I may have also bought some more yarn, but I'll tell you all about that another time.

Opposite the yarn shop is a wonderful little shop, The Spice Store, which is filled to the ceiling with such cute and appealing toys and gifts.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you'll know that Eleanor collects giraffes. This shop was chock a block full of them.

All manner of giraffes adorned the windows.

I know that if Eleanor had been with us, she'd have encouraged me to open my purse, but as she was still ensconced in the workshop working on her sculpture, I got away scot free. I may not be so lucky next time.

Do you want to know what Daniel was doing while Eleanor attened The Sculpture Workshop and Mick and I did a bit of yarn shopping? He caught up on a bit of sleep after a much longed for lie-in. Teenagers!

  1. Eleanor's sculpture is magnificent! She has a real talent.
    I love the spotty giraffes.
Why did I immediately think of ice cream when I saw Eleanor's yarn choices? Chocolate, strawberry and pistachio!

    1. I thought she did really well with the sculpture. She's quite creative, but I think even people without a creative bone in their body could have a go at this, I'm so pleased I found out about it. I'm always linking food to things, I can see ice cream in the yarn colours too.

  2. What a talent Eleanor is. Her sculpture is wonderful. You'd better keep her eyes away from your blog page so she can't read about your lack of giraffe buying.

    1. I was really surprised when we went to pick her up, I think she made a wonderful sculpture. I'm not sure there's much room left in her bedroom for any more giraffes, though I'm sure she'd manage to shoehorn a few more in somewhere.

  3. Eleanor is so talented! I'm very impressed with her sculpture. I would have loved to visit there when I was younger. I'm glad you got some Stylecraft; it's my favorite cheaper yarn too! I love the colors for Eleanor's ripple.

    1. I definitely wouldn't have made anything as good as Eleanor managed. I think Eleanor's ripple will be lovely with those colours, it's just a case of working out which pattern to arrange the colours in now.

  4. I love Eleanor's sculpture! I bet it would have been great fun to have had a go, I'm not very artistic but I would have given it my best shot! Actually, I probably would have come with you to the wool shop and into Wadebridge too.

    1. Eleanor's quite artistic, but I don't think you necessarily need to be to have a go at this. We all wished we'd had a go after we saw Eleanor's creation.

  5. That's a really clever sculpture Eleanor made! I am very impressed.

I paid £2.20 for Stylecraft just last week so that's a great price! What a shame the shop is at the other end of the country or I'd be hotfooting it there to get me some. :o)

    1. We were surprised when we went back to collect her and saw what she'd made. I wish I could find a Stylecraft supplier with those prices nearer to home.

  6. I think you have a very creative daughter and glad she is willing to have a go at these things as so many don't. Sounds like you and Mick had a lovely morning too and glad they still had some bargain wool. Looking forward to seeing your ripple rugs. Are they crocheted or knitted?

    1. Eleanor's quite outgoing and will try most things, she's different to me, I'm very reserved. I'm making crocheted blankets. Daniel's is still in progress, so I won't be starting on Eleanor's until his is finished.

I've been following for awhile and I didn't know that your daughter collected giraffes!!! Did I know that and maybe forgot? anyway, I LOVE giraffes! I always have and when I saw a photo of that shop I nearly passed out :)
Love love love that art studio as well, I would have had a go with her, I love art and I love sculpture and now that I'm all grown up and adult like... I can't find the time or money for things like that... sigh... She did an amazing job your daughter... she is a true artist with a great eye and hand for sculpture!

    1. That shop is a giraffe lovers paradise, Eleanor would have been spoilt for choice had she been with us. I haven't seen anything like The Sculpture Workshop before where you can just book a session for a couple of hours and have a go. I knew that Eleanor would enjoy it as she loves anything like that. I think she did really well with her sculpture.

    1. He doesn't just do it on holiday. The Sculpture Workshop was something a bit different to do on a rainy day, in fact, Eleanor was so keen to have a go that she was quite willing to miss a morning at the beach in order to try her hand at it.
