Padstow

Padstow is on the north coast of Cornwall and we've visited every time we've stayed in the area. It was originally a fishing port but is now a popular tourist destination. The chef, Rick Stein, has four restaurants in Padstow along with a cookery school, four shops and guest accommodation. We've never eaten in one of his restaurants but they're extremely popular.

We always park outside of the main tourist area and walk down. It's quite hilly but provides some lovely views.

The cottages we pass are beautiful.

Some are really quite quirky and some are quaint.

There's lots of shops in Padstow and the main shopping area is often crowded, but I enjoy browsing the many gift shops and galleries.

I thought these dogs made from wellies, which I saw outside a shop, were so cute. I made a donation to the RNLI in order to take their photo.

Being a fishing port, there's also lots going on around the harbour.

The view over the Camel estuary is stunning.

Though we've visited previously, it's always a day out we enjoy. I'm sure Padstow is a place we'll visit again and again.

  1. I stayed in Padstow a few years ago for my 40th birthday. I loved it, and the whole area actually. We didn't eat in Rick Steins either but did enjoy the shopping and some lovely leisurely meals in other places.

  4. The dogs made of wellies are REALLY clever! I've never been to Padstow (even though I've heard loads about it over the years) so it's lovely to see you photos. Jx

    1. They are clever, I've got a good mind to save all our old wellies from now on and have a go at making one myself. Padstow is one of the places we enjoy going back to each time we visit Cornwall, such a lovely place.

  5. Such a pretty place. I love the houses, they're all so different. I would like that little one with the pink roses climbing up the front, please. :)

    1. That's my favourite too. I like how all the cottages are so different, they all have their unique style and little touches which the owners have given them over the years.

    1. Thank you. It's such a lovely place, I think I'd like more time really to explore further, we tend to go over the same things each time we go.

  8. Very individual looking cottages, quirky is the right word.
I love the wellies, how clever of someone to thunk of doing that and a great way to raise a bit of dosh for a worthwhile charity too.

    1. I love all the different cottages, each one so different from the others. The welly dogs made us smile, and a great idea to charge for photos of them.

  9. I've been to Padstow twice now and last time (2011) we had a lovely day there with my penfriend and her hubby and bought ice creams from one of the Rick Stein shops. The estuary is lovely.

  10. We used to go down to the west coast a lot when I was a child and lived in the south. I would love to return especially when I found out more about my Cornish/Devon roots on my mother's side of the family. Padstow looks a lovely place, full of character with those pretty cottages, and what a good idea to take a leisurely walk along those streets and just browse!

    1. There's some beautiful places in both Devon and Cornwall. I think it makes places even more interesting when you find a connection to them in your ancestry. It would be fun to take a trip and look up all the places you've discovered are connected to your mother's side of the family.

    1. Padstow is always on the list of places I want to visit when we go to Cornwall. Another place is Boscastle, I love it there too, but we didn't make it this year sadly.

  12. I'll never tire of seeing photos of Padstow, it's one of my favourite places to go. We used to go twice a year before Violet started school, renting out the gorgeous Avon Cottage just outside Padstow, in the tiny village of Treator. We haven't dined out at one of RS's restaurants, but alsways make room for his tasty fish & chips.

    1. There's so many gorgeous cottages around that area, in fact, in Cornwall in general. We had fish and chips whilst in Padstow, but sadly not Rick Stein's.

  13. Jo you are so blessed to live in such a beautiful country, and these photos are so very serene. I'd love to visit this town.
As I'm typing this I'm seeing pictures of socks off to the side, which I'm thinking you knitted, so pretty! I love them!

    1. I do try to count my blessings that I live in such a beautiful country, though I have to say that there's so much of it I've yet to explore. All my knitted and crocheted items are listed down the side of my blog, if you click on them it takes you to the blog post about each one.

  14. Oh I do love that bit of the coast. Lovely pics Jo.

Do you know I think the house in the 4th photo was used in a TV drama once, just wish I could remember which.

  15. Oh, lovely photos! I love Padstow. We went about 6 years ago and ate fish and chips in one of Rick Stein's places. They were amazing which is just as well as they weren't cheap. I love Rock beach over the harbour too, I spent a lot of childhood holidays there. x

    1. I can just imagine the price. We ate fish and chips whilst there, but not from Rick Stein's. I've heard about Rock but have never been, perhaps next times. It's lovely that you have happy memories of the area from your childhood holidays.

  16. Hi Jo,

What a lovely post, with really beautiful photos of Padstow. We visited it a few years ago and ate garlic prawns from Rick Stein's fish and chip shop. I think we also drank in his pub.

Yes it was busy but still lovely.
