Snow Days

We had quite a snowfall on Sunday night and in to Monday morning, in fact, it didn't actually stop snowing until yesterday afternoon. As a result of this, the school was closed, so Daniel and Eleanor had the day off.

It was a blessing for Daniel as he's started with a cold and bad chest, and didn't feel like going to school anyway, though he's taking exams this week, so come what may tomorrow and Friday, he'll have to go in.

Eleanor and I decided to take Archie for a run in the back field. I think there's something magical about untouched, freshly laid snow.

It was still snowing lightly and the sky was full of it.

We made sure that Archie was nice and warm in his coat. He only ever wears a coat when it snows or it's exceptionally cold.

Archie loves to play in the snow, front paws and head flat to the floor with his bum sticking up in the air before dashing this way and that and biting at the snow as he runs. He's also got a fascination with sticking his head right down in to the snow, I don't know what he's doing under there.

His ears are covered in snow when he eventually pulls his head out.

The only problem with long-haired dogs is that the snow sticks to their fur, and as they run along, each bit gathers more snow, until it's the snowball effect. This is what Archie looks like after a walk in the snow.

We had more snow fall overnight and the school is closed again today. The roads are terribly icy around here as we never get the gritters up our little cul-de-sac. We've had the worst of the snow now, according to the weather forecast, though it seems to change on an hourly basis, so who knows.

  1. It's good to see Archie enjoying himself! It snowed here all day Sunday but thankfully not since. Looks like it may improve over the weekend. Flighty xx

    1. Archie used to cry in the snow when he was a puppy, I think the ice got between his toes and hurt him. I'm glad he's changed now he's older. The snow can go now for me, I've had enough of it already.

  2. It looks so beautiful Jo, and Archie looks so cute! I especially love the photo of him sticking his tongue out.

    1. It's beautiful until it turns to slush, then it can disappear for me. I think Archie was trying to lick the wet off his nose.

  3. Archie looks like he brought half of the snow back in with him... leaving little puddles wherever he went for awhile.
We've got snow here too but the wind is the kind that takes your breath away... minus 15C. Now that will put your knickers in a knot!

    1. Goodness, that's cold. The wind does tend to make a difference to the temperature. It can be a real pain how the snow clings to Archie, it takes a while for him to thaw out.

  4. Oh bless little Archie. Animals do tend to like snow I have found. Marmalade hasnt ventured out at all this week since the snow arrived but then she is becoming more and more a house cat.Keep warm.

    1. We used to have a house cat who turned in to an outdoor cat. He didn't like the snow, I don't think many cats do, they like their home comforts too much.

  5. OMG Jo look at Archie! Made me laugh out loud at the picture with all the snow balls on his tummy. Bet he made a good sized puddle under him when that lot thawed lol xx

    1. It's a nightmare trying to get all the snow off Archie after he's been in the snow. I've found the easiest way is to break up all the larger balls and then wrap him in a towel until he thaws out. I've been looking for suggestions on the web today, and discovered that it's a problem for most Cavaliers. Apparently, the easiest method is to soak each ball in some warm water until it melts, so I think I'll give this a go next time. It sounds time consuming though.

  6. Looks like Archie loves the snow - I've never seen snow clinging like that before - I thought Logan was bad enough when we only had an inch of the stuff!!Gorgeous pictures of Archie!
Thankfully it stopped snowing here Sunday evening, and Bella's school stayed open for those who live in the town - we were holed up as the lane was impassable without 4 wheel drive, but better this morning although now like an ice-rink!
Good luck to Daniel with his exams this week.Bella only has one, and that's tomorrow.
Hope Daniel hears from some uni's soon - will be exciting for you all!
    Keep warm Jo!

    1. Archie comes in covered with snowballs even after a quick trip in the garden for a tinkle, it's a real problem. I think ice is the worst thing about snow. We never get gritters up our little cul-de-sac and the snow always gets compacted on the road and turns to ice, it's lethal. Daniel had four exams last week, he's got another three this week and one on Monday. Hope Bella's goes well. Daniel's started hearing from the universities he's applied to. He's got two offers, and one of the universities wants him to attend an interview, so he's just waiting to hear from the other two now.

  7. I am ready to see the back of it now - my bosses are not very sympathetic when we cannot get in! Also, thought you might like to know that a sort of relative of mine (her sister married my uncle) has reopened the cafe at Elsecar Park. Hubby has been to test it already and says the sausage and bacon butties are fab! http://www.facebook.com/TeeCupElsecarPark

    1. I don't like the snow hanging around either, it's so compacted on the road that it's turned to ice. Thanks for letting me know about the cafe, we'll definitely call in when we visit.

    1. There's still lots of it about here, though much of it is turning to ice, which I hate. Even Archie slips everywhere on his walks.

Good Luck to Daniel for his exams.

    1. I'm trying to keep Archie out of the snow as much as possible, it's a job and a half each time he comes in covered in snowballs. Thank you, Daniel has two exams this morning, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he does ok in them.

  11. Rosie gets those snowballs on her too ... well, she would if we had any snow! It has snowed but it hasn't stayed around long enough to get the ground white. Is it too adult of me to say "I'm glad about that"? :oD

    1. I'd rather the snow went now, it's at that stage where it's either slush or ice, not good either way. I think the snow is a problem for most Cavaliers, their fur seems to attract snowballs.

  12. Archie is so cute! Tom won't go out in the snow unless we literally push him through the cat flap. On Friday Mark ended up outside with him so that he would do the things that cats need to do...
I hope that David is starting to feel a bit better and that all his exams go OK this week. Jx

    1. We used to have a cat who hated the snow too, cats do like their home comforts. Daniel's feeling much better, thank goodness. He had two exams yesterday which he thought went ok. One more tomorrow and one on Monday and then he's done.

  13. Lovely photos. I agree, the snow is most beautiful when it's freshly fallen and you can make big footprints in it. I do hope Daniel feels better in time for his exams.

    1. Daniel's much better now, though he'd have had to go in for his exams no matter what he was feeling like. The snow is just a slushy mess here now, though the road is so compacted that it's solid ice.

  14. Oh my, what wonderful pictures of Archie enjoying the snow. The one with the snowballs on his fur made me laugh out loud! He is such a little bundle of cuteness.
I hope Daniel is feeling better and that he has been able to get into college for his exam today.
    Take care out there.

    1. Archie is usually cute, not so much when he's dripping snow all over my floor. The school opened again yesterday to all pupils, and Daniel took two of his exams, just two more to go now.

    1. Thank you. Daniel's put a lot of work in to his revision so I hope he gets good grades. There's still quite a bit of snow around here so Archie continues to bring snowballs in on his fur.

    1. A lot of the snow has thawed today, but it's still compacted ice on the road, I do wish it would hurry up and melt. Daniel is much better, only two more exams to go now. Archie loves the snow, I just wish he didn't bring it all home with him.

  17. I don't know about you, but the snow managed one last hurrah for us on Friday night before the rain came yesterday. Not that I've been in a position to get out in it ... tucked up in the warm has been the place for me! Thanks so much for the get well wishes Jo :)

Love that snap of snowball Archie!

    1. It sounds as though you're a day ahead of us with the weather. We had a heavy snowfall over night on Friday and in to Saturday, we even had to dig the car out yesterday, but it's just about all gone now after heavy rain in the early hours of this morning. Archie's been bringing home plenty more snowballs, but I'm hoping that's the end of it now.

  18. That is a seriously snowballed dog! Ollie used to get like that and loved it - daft creature, Daisy is far more dainty and refined and would rather stay in front of the wood burner, "add more logs, slave, if you please"

    1. I'm with Daisy, snow really isn't my thing. This isn't the worst I've seen Archie, he loves to play in the snow but the trouble is that he brings half of it home with him.
