A Little Treat

I've tried to curb my magazine habit this year as spending on them can really mount up. I used to subscribe to Gardeners World Magazine through Tesco Clubcard Deals, which wasn't too bad as it kept the cost down, but I found they weren't getting read as I just didn't have time, and also, the content is much the same from one month in one year to the same month in another year. I don't really read women's magazines, but I do enjoy craft and lifestyle magazines.

I've done really well and can't remember buying any magazines this year. Perhaps I did give in to temptation and bought a couple, but I really don't recall. I decided that I've done so well that a treat was in order, when I went shopping I thought I'd allow myself to pop one in the basket. The problem was, which to choose. I wanted something with a bit of everything in it, and as it's the December issue, I wanted something with some Christmas content. The shelves were stocked full, there was so much choice, but I eventually settled on Prima. The cover seemed to suggest that there's plenty in there about the festive season. At £2.99, it isn't one of the more expensive ones either.

I paid for my shopping, and then on the way out of the supermarket, I noticed a stand which contained a new magazine, Homemaker. It promised 'Creative ideas for your home' and seemed to be targeted at a wide audience - Making - Interiors - Stitching - Baking - Knitting & More. This is the very first issue. Hmmm, I've been good all year, so a quick detour to another till and this magazine was mine. It cost rather more than Prima at £4.99, but I don't know when I'll buy another magazine.

I haven't had chance to sit and have a proper read of it yet, but a quick flick through shows me that there's lots of things in there that I'd like to have a go at. Just look at these Christmas Biscuits, they look fab hanging from the tree with their pretty gingham ribbons, though I wouldn't be able to do that in our house as Archie would eat them all.

This issue of Homemaker came with a free Creative Christmas Source Book. Again, I've only had a quick flick through, but there's more projects in here, as well as fonts, labels, papers and art work to cut out and use for crafty makes.

I took a shine to this Paper Angel, she looks so easy to make, I'll have to give it a go.

So, I'm stocked up with plenty of magazines to read for a while, but I want to also mention Tesco Magazine. This is a free magazine and it's chock a block with all things festive. As you would imagine, there's plenty of advertisements for things you can buy in store, but there's also some interesting articles, lots of recipes and a heap of clever ideas and things to make. Definitely worth popping a copy in with your groceries if you happen to shop at Tesco.

I'm looking forward to putting my feet up, reading the magazines and attempting some of the projects.

  1. I only subscribe to one magazine, Southern Living, but at Christmas I usually pick up a couple of magazines that focus on Christmas, yours look good, I like the gingerbread folks and their ribbons.

  2. The new mag looks really interesting - I'll watch out for it round here. We have a free mag called Worcestershire Now. There's lots of adverts to cover the costs of printing but it's still a nice little local publication. The regular features include local walks and sensible reviews of local eateries. I always enjoy settling down with a mag and a brew! Jx

    1. I like the sound of your free mag. It does show that you don't have to spend lots on reading matter. I'm pleased that we have a free local paper, there's so many interesting things in regional publications.

  3. Over here we call those gingerbread delights "cookies". I think it would be really fun to hang some on the tree for my grandkids to grab and eat. My son-in-law makes gingerbread houses every Christmas and decorates them with all kinds of candy - fun to do and the kids love doing it so they can eat a few candies as they decorate.

    1. I love gingerbread houses, but I just aren't clever enough to make one. I bet your grandchildren wait to decorate it every year, a lovely family tradition.

    1. It's just like I was saying about Gardeners World Magazine, the same things appear year on year. I'm sure you still get lots of inspiration from your 1990 copy as you would if you bought this year's.

  5. I bought the Homemaker magazine that you have got and its got some lovely things in. I must admit I do tend to save 'special' editions, i.e. christmas specials and get them out year after year!

    1. I must start saving my special editions too, it would save me loads of money. I wonder if we'll both attempt the same projects in Homemaker.

    1. I love Country Living too. It's so easy to overspend on magazines, especially with the price that some of them are now too.

  7. I steer clear of mags through the year, occasionally I buy the Sainsbury's one. Christmas is my weak time though, so many tempting covers!
I havem't seen the Homemaker one, will keep my eye out for it, thanks for sharing.
    The angel is so sweet!

    1. I've surprised myself how good I've been where magazines are concerned this year. They can definitely bump the shopping bill up when you pop them in the trolley regularly. I may have a go at the angel as Eleanor always complains about our angel tree topper, or I may get Eleanor on the case.

  8. That Homemaker magazine looks tempting - I'll have to look out for that. I am going of Mollie Makes a little - never thought I'd say that! x

    1. I've never bought Mollie Makes myself, but I've heard good and bad reviews of it. From flicking through Mollie Makes on the shelf, I think Homemaker may be on the same lines, but with more projects for the home.
