A Local Walk For Archie

We often jump in the car and take Archie to lovely places like Lotherton or Temple Newsam, which I've posted about many times in the past, but we've also got some lovely walks on our doorstep without needing to travel in the car to get there. These are the places he walks daily so we rotate them. I'm going to show you the walk we took on Thursday.

A lot of dog walkers use this lane and it also leads to some stables, though there were no horses in the yard on Thursday, they were all tucked up indoors. A dog did come out to see Archie as we passed though and he wanted to come on our walk with us but he was very good and went home when we told him to.

The view to our right. We used to cross this field and it would take us to lower fields where we could continue on a circular walk. Unfortunately, back in 2012, sixty eight houses were built on the lower field and we're now unable to take this circular walk, we have to turn around and come back the way we came. I wrote about it in my A Sad E-State Of Affairs post.

The view to our left. This field is full of crops during the summer months but they've all been harvested now.

Archie's really good when he's off his lead, he does love a good sniff around but he doesn't stray from us very far, he runs to catch up as soon as he sees we've walked a few yards ahead.

I always try to get some good photos of Archie when we take him for walks but it's very difficult, he doesn't stand still for long so my efforts result in blurred snaps. If he does stand still he's usually eating grass!

I was expecting the lane to be rather muddy on Thursday as we'd had quite a bit of rain but it wasn't too bad, there was the odd puddle or two but we managed to avoid them.

It's not a long walk but it's long enough for one of Archie's daily walks, we don't take him as far as we used to these days. He's fine when we're out and about but it knocks him out when we get home.

I hope you enjoyed seeing one of Archie's regular walks. Perhaps I'll show you one of the others another day.

  1. You are lucky with the mud, Archie must be a magnet for it with his short legs and soft coat.

    1. I was expecting a lot more mud than there was. We're quite lucky with Archie now, we keep his coat quite short so he doesn't get as dirty as he did when his coat was longer, it's his paws which need washing occasionally.

  2. It's good to get out for a walk without needing to take the car. A lot of our fave walks are a couple of miles away, so we only do these weekly or fortnightly. Some of our walking places are also being built on. The Moss, which is just a short walk from us, was always a lovely place to walk, but now it's becoming a new housing estate :( Best, Jane x

    1. We're really lucky to have some lovely places to walk close by. It's such a shame that so many green spaces are being built on though, plans to build thousands of new homes in our small town has just been axed, we're so pleased about that, but plans to build on a smaller scale are ongoing.

  3. It's good to have a local walk like that which Archie and you can enjoy. It looks like there's always something of interest for both of you. xx

    1. It's nice to get out and about and see what's going on close by, as you say, there's always something of interest. It's nice to see the changing seasons, though I'm not always happy when summer comes to an end.

    1. Archie doesn't seem to mind where he takes his walks, he always enjoys them. He's getting old though now so we don't venture too far.

    1. It's always nice to get out and enjoy a walk in the good weather, but I don't always feel that way during the winter months or when it's raining or drizzly but even then I'm always pleased once I get out there. The fresh air really is good for you.

  6. What a lovely stroll and well done for getting a couple of pictures of The Boy.

I know what you mean about not taking him so far these days; I remember realising that one of our 3-mile local circuits was absolutely wiping Daisy out when we got home, but if we took her 'round the block' and she had six ½ mile outings spread during the day she was very happy. πŸΎπŸ’š

    1. I think Archie must be camera shy, he's not one for posing for his photo taking. He still loves his walks, and he'll walk for as long as we want him to, it's just when we get home again that he flops down and has trouble getting back up. He's much happier with a few shorter walks.

Do you ever walk on the canal tow path in Calverley? Not sure whereabouts in Leeds you are - but my son & DIL are living in a cottage right at the side of the canal with her parents whilst they save for a house of their own. It's a lovely walk!

    1. We live at the other side of Leeds to Calverley, I've just checked online and we're over eighteen miles away. How lovely to live by the side of the canal and have that wonderful walk on their doorstep.

    1. The trees don't seem to be dropping their leaves very much just yet, it's still very green. Archie used to head straight for any puddle he saw when he was younger but he seems to have grown out of it now, it's not often that we have to dunk him in the bath after a walk these days.

    1. I must admit that having a dog does make me get out more than I would if I didn't have him, he's a reason to put on my coat and shoes when the weather's bad and I'm always pleased once I'm out there.

  15. How lucky for all of you, to have these walks, right close to home!!!!

I take it, that those houses were built, and obliterated the Free Walking... I thought that long used walking trails, were sacred in the UK. But I suppose, when land is totally torn up, and reused, as homes, this becomes impossible.

    1. We have green belt in the UK, areas which are supposed to be protected from development, but it doesn't work that way. Councils seem only too happy to allow developers to build on this land these days. It's sad to see so many green places being swallowed up with housing developments.

  16. You have some beautiful countryside right on your doorstep. I cannot believe they got 68 houses into that field, they must have postage stamp gardens. Thank you for sharing your lovely walk with us all.

    1. There's over two hundred houses going up in an area not much bigger than that at the moment. They tend to build upwards these days, with three floors rather than two to squash as many houses into an area as they can, it's ridiculous.

  17. Your walk looks lovely, Archie certainly looks a lovely boy. Good that he wasn't too muddy on your return, we've returned from a week away and the ground is so wet and there have been flooded areas locally too.
