In The Making - July 2019

A roundup of the things I'm working on at the moment.

I've had two finishes this month, the Shapely Boyfriend Cardigan and the Goomy 50 Socks. The only things I've got on my needles now are the two Scrappy Blankets which are long term projects.

I had a bit of a tidy up and clear out in my craft room at the beginning of the month. I decided that I'd give my languishing projects to the charity shop. The first thing I decided would go was the Joyful World cross stitch which I started back in 2016. It had already been put to one side when I wrote my More Than I Can Chew post last year but it was time to pass it on. I also came across a granny stripe crochet blanket which had been started some time ago and though I initially decided to send that to the charity shop too, I quickly retrieved it as I had second thoughts. I'm pleased that I did now as I've been enjoying working on that this month. The granny stripe is such a repetitive rhythm, just what I enjoy when I'm watching TV or a podcast.

Another few squares have been added to my scrappy blanket too. This grows so slowly but it's nice to work on between other things. I've started my seams as a cross in the centre four squares and I'm making all the seams radiate out from them. Other people work them as a chevron or in straight lines, there's really no right or wrong way, just what you prefer.

So to sum up, the only things I've now got on the go are two scrappy blankets and a granny stripe crochet blanket, which are all long term projects. Time to cast on something new.

  1. Granny stripe crochet is very relaxing as you are winding down after a long day. Yours is lovely & bright, just right to wrap around the legs on a cold winter evening. The knitted square rug is growing too. Well done! Take care & huggles.

    1. It's a while since I've done any crochet but I'm finding it relaxing again in front of the TV, I find it very hard to just sit and watch, I need something else to occupy my mind. The colours I'm using are from an Attic 24 yarn pack, not necessarily the colours I'd choose myself if I were putting them together but they're working out fine.

  2. The yarns in your scrappy blanket look wonderful together, I'm doing my scrappy blanket in small granny squares, I do like your knitted design.

    1. I'm not being very precious about colour matching in my scrappy blanket, anything goes, but I think that's the charm of these kind of blankets. I've never made a knitted blanket before but I'm loving working on this.

  3. Your stripy blanket looks so bright and beautiful. I've actually started building a yarn stash. I buy a couple of balls of Stylecraft DK whenever I get the chance and my stash is building up nicely. I'm still a monogamous crafter, so when I finish what I'm doing I will have plenty of yarn already to inspire something new to crochet! Best, Jane x

    1. The yarn I'm using for this blanket is an Attic 24 pack but I have lots of Stylecraft yarn in my stash. Buying a ball or two when you get the chance is a good way to build a stash though. I started doing that with Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino. It would be expensive to buy enough for a blanket in one go so I'm just adding a ball here and there, I'm in no rush.

  4. How lovely to have a way to pass on, a project, which you know you won't finish. It frees up your space, and someone else can enjoy it.

Seems any/all crafts accumulate "maybe's"... When I was sewing a few years ago, for the first time in ages, I accumulated pieces of cloth... Which I "was going to" make into this, and into that.... -sigh-

Guess the old saying, "Eyes are bigger than stomach" applies to more, than just eating!!! :-))))

    1. Definitely. I think we all start things but our tastes change or we find that we don't enjoy working on it as much as we thought we would. I'm sure someone will enjoy finishing the cross stitch I sent to the charity shop, I'd printed out each month's design so they'll be able to follow that.

  6. Both your blanket projects are lovely. It is good to have a simple slow burner project or two for those times when you just want your hands to work but your mind to wander. Enjoy the progress you are making while your your thinking about other projects x

  8. Love your colourful stripy blanket, I agree something to do, I can´t sit doing nothing either. Great you saved it and are enjoying doing it again. Your scrappy blanket is certainly growing, looking really good. xcx

    1. It's amazing how a few extra squares in the blanket makes it look so much bigger. It's quite addictive as the squares don't take too long to knit.

  10. I love a granny stripe. They are so relaxing to work on. Your projects are far more exciting than mine - I'm just working on a new dishcloth! 😃

    1. I enjoy knitting a dishcloth, it's quite satisfying casting something on which won't take very long to knit and which can be put straight into use afterwards.

  11. Your cardigan and socks are to be admired, as always. I like your scrappy blankets especially the one made up of squares. I'm still crocheting my double bed cover blanket. I've just bought some more yarn from a craft shop in our local high street in another shade of blue so I'm enjoying the make. Someone will appreciate the Joyful World cross stitch you donated to the charity shop.

    1. The scrappy blanket is such a fun make. It's quite liberating not to colour match, the hotchpotch colour placement gives it its charm.

  14. I've only crocheted a handful of times in the past, but the more I see the granny stripe blanket (which I think I first saw on the Stranded Podcast), the more I think I may have to put that one in my que at some point. I have a number of projects that are only partly done - while you're looking to cast on more, I'm looking to finish up 4 or 5 that have been on the needles for months (or years in the case of a lace shawl that I made a mistake on and I've been procrastinating on ripping back!).

    1. I've only ever crochet blankets in the past but I'd like to have a go at amigurumi at some point. Mick bought me Edward's Menagerie for Christmas a few years ago and I've never tried anything from it yet. I feel much better now that I've had a clear out of my projects and finished some off, it's definitely time to cast on more now.

  15. The granny blanket is very colourful. There is something therapeutic about just sitting and not having to count to much or concentrate. I bet you'll be casting on some socks for the Yarndale sockline??

    1. I think knitting or crocheting something which doesn't require much brain power is very therapeutic. I'd forgotten all about the Yarndale Sockline, I haven't cast on any socks for it yet.

    1. The seams can be set in lots of different ways but I liked it like this best, you just have to make sure that you're casting on the squares the right way round.
