I've named my latest socks Goomy 50 Socks because they're made from Goomy 50 yarn by Bergere de France, I really need to get an imagination.
I really enjoyed knitting the first sock but once I got to the second one, I just couldn't get the pattern to match up. I wound the yarn and cast on in different places according to where I thought I'd get a match but it just didn't work. I know that there is a pattern and the colouring isn't just random as I've seen other people manage to get two matching socks but, to be honest, it wasn't long after my mum had died and I just couldn't be bothered faffing about.
I didn't think the two socks were going to match at all but they're not actually that bad now they're finished and I can see them side by side, though to be honest, I just don't really care at the moment, there's more to worry about in life.
Anyway, I'll tell you a bit about these socks. I really like the patterned yarn so I decided that I'd knit a plain sock to show it off. I did dress the socks up a bit with a couple of pretty details. I don't often knit a twisted rib but I decided I would on these socks.
I've also knit a fancier heel than I usually do. This is a modified Eye of Partridge heel, it's such a pretty design. I used the instructions from the Hermione's Everyday Socks pattern.
They haven't turned out quite as I'd imagined as they don't match completely but I do still like them.
With the stripes, you don't notice the socks aren't an exact match, they just look lovely. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI think the patterning yarn is quite forgiving, they've turned out much better than I thought they would.
DeleteThey are gorgeous & I can't imagine not liking any of your beautiful handmade socks. Love the name! Take care & huggles.
ReplyDeleteI've got more of this yarn in different colourways in my stash, but I think the yellow is my favourite of all.
DeleteI think they are lovely.
ReplyDeleteI like them more than I thought I was going to do when I was knitting them.
DeleteI think they look a pretty good match!I am having the same problem with some yarn I have.First sock finished.Just cannot get the second to line up so it is on hold at the moment.
ReplyDeleteIt's so frustrating trying to get a match, it's not always easy. These have matched up better than I thought they would.
DeleteI think a bit of randomness makes them unique and that colour is so striking! I have no imagination; none of my patterns have names, just simply what they are. Best, Jane x
ReplyDeleteI love the colour, and I agree, handmade things aren't meant to be perfect. I'm not very imaginative when it comes to naming my projects.
DeleteI wouldn't worry Jo I think this is part of the quirkiness of using this type of wool and to be honest most people don't even notice.
ReplyDeleteMx
I don't think they do. They've ended up matching better than I thought they would anyway.
DeleteI still feel completely incompetent when I see people making socks. I love these colours
ReplyDeleteIf you can knit, or even crochet, you can make socks. They seem scary if you've never made them before but you realise they're really easy once you've made your first pair.
DeleteAnother interesting name!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd who cares if they don't match "purrrrrrrrfectly"?????
:-)
You are not going to hold your legs still, for everyone who sees them, so they can check them. >,-))))
Ha ha, that made me chuckle. No, I'm not, and they've turned out better than I thought they would when I was knitting the second sock.
DeleteI love your socks. I like the slight mismatch actually. The colour is nice and I really like your heel, too. Thanks for the link, will check it out. I am not terribly bothered about wearing matching socks. Indeed, shoes neither. I was wearing different ones on each foot yesterday but only noticed when I took them off, two hours later.... Anyway, I remembered that Christine of Winwick Mum explains how to do it for perfectly matching socks. Here the link https://www.winwickmum.co.uk/2015/04/sockalong-accessories-and-matching-yarn.html.
ReplyDeleteThank you for that. I can usually match socks, it's just this yarn which doesn't make it easy. I think I'm a bit of a perfectionist and that's why I like my socks to match, I know I should lighten up, but shoes, no way! Ha ha.
DeleteThey look wonderful. I love the colours and smiled that you named them.
ReplyDeleteI think the names come from having to give projects a title on Ravelry. I love the colour of this yarn too.
DeleteUmmm the name could do with some work ;)
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter that they don't match, they're unique!
Mu Mum gave me a pair of hand knitted socks the other day. My first ever pair, and they're so nice! So comfy, they look to be a very similar pattern to these.
xx
I've never had much of an imagination. How lovely that you've got a pair of hand knitted socks, I rarely wear any others these days, my feet are very spoilt and like the very best.
DeleteI think your socks are great, doesn´t matter they don´t completely match, hope they are nice and comfy xcx
ReplyDeleteI think them being warm and cosy is the main thing, and they're certainly that.
DeleteWhenever my grandmother had a project that didn't turn out exactly as she thought it should she would say, "Close enough for government work". I'm not sure what that means but it seemed like after she said it the "not quite perfect" project was just fine the way it was!
ReplyDeleteYour grandmother sounds very wise. Who's going to notice if something's not quite perfect? I doubt anyone does.
DeleteI think they should be called, bright and beautiful socks because they are.
ReplyDeleteAhhh, what a lovely name that would be.
DeleteI didn't even notice that the socks didn't match until you mentioned it, then I had to go back and look again and I still had trouble, until I looked closely at the foot. Well done. I've just had a bit catch up - I think your cardigan is fab and many congratulations to Eleanor. x
ReplyDeleteThey definitely haven't turned out as bad as I thought they were going to. Thank you, Eleanor's working hard on the job finding front now.
DeleteI like them, though I would've kept trying to match them. Not that I don't like them 'just the way they are' but because I am just a right fuss pot and need them matched. HOWEVER - that's why I don't have lots of finished work, I'm too busy unpicking. Enjoy your socks Jo, they are great! Cx
ReplyDeleteOrdinarily, I wouldn't have given up trying to match them quite so easily, but there are times in your life when you realise that it just isn't really important in the grand scheme of things. I'm just glad to have a finished item, my knitting mojo has been missing since my mum died at the end of March.
DeleteMy goodness those are beautiful ! I been looking at different heel options also.
ReplyDeleteThe Eye of Partridge heel gives a prettier finish than usual, something just a bit fancier.
DeleteVery groovy!!!xxx
ReplyDeleteI love the colour of these socks.
DeleteHello! Coming to you via Pam's A New Life in Wales blog. Love those socks, they look so comfy! I do want to ask if you've heard anything from or about Pam recently? She hasn't blogged in about a month. I know some people take a break occasionally but I've not known her to do so for so long since I've been following her blog and certainly not without a quick post to say she'd be gone for a bit. I'm most concerned as her last post mentioned she was ill with the flu but on the mend. I did try to comment to see if she'd reply or someone would but all her comments have to be approved first so that hasn't shown up, also worrisome. I'm just concerned as I said and I wondered if you or one of YOUR followers might know something? Thanks so much, hope to hear good news! Have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteThey're very comfy socks, I do love hand made. I'm afraid I haven't heard anything from Pam either. I know a few people have tried to contact her, I do hope everything's okay with her.
DeleteGreat name and great looking socks!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I'm pleased with them, even though I didn't think I was going to be.
