Last Day In Norfolk

We were coming to the end of our holiday. The cottage was booked until the Friday but as the weather wasn't brilliant on the Thursday we decided that we'd head home later that day rather than staying another night and having to rush around packing up the next morning, as we had to be out by 10am.

We headed out to the beach where Mick was planning on doing a little more fishing but he decided against that. We'd seen lots of cormorants fishing in the sea throughout the week but this one perched obligingly on the groynes so that I could take his photo.

I mentioned in an earlier post how I'd set a challenge for us all at the beginning of the holiday to find a pebble with a hole through it. As none of us had yet found one I didn't think we were going to do so, but walking on the beach on that last day, Eleanor came up trumps.

Not only did she find a pebble with a hole through it, earning her the title of champion, but she also claimed the prize. I thought something like an ice cream would suffice but Eleanor had other ideas, she'd seen a make up palette she wanted and it ended up costing me twenty five quid! It's the last time I'll issue any challenges on holiday, that's for sure!

  1. I think she cheated and made the hole with those nails,

    1. Ha ha, you could be right. I don't know why she had those nails done, her natural nails were beautiful before and they're ruined now.

  2. We have shingle beach's locally and we always look for pebbles with holes, and we do bring them home, I have a few on a piece of wire in my shed. Expensive prize, I would have gone for the ice cream.

    1. I've never really looked for pebbles with holes in them before, I usually beachcomb for sea glass but we had a change this holiday. It was an expensive prize, but she was very happy with it.

  3. Oh, how they change as they grow older! Lucky Eleanor. A good find though. X

    1. Don't they just. I remember the days when she'd have been more than happy with an ice cream.

  4. Expensive challenge for you, bless you. This reminded me of my Mum who would give us money instead of Easter eggs. I've always found that a bit strange and was determined never to start that with my 2 boys. Not because I was being mean but it's just an unnecessary expense on a day which in itself is nothing to do with you eg not a birthday.
    Anyway, lucky find Cx

    1. I didn't mind really, I'm a bit of a pushover with my kids and still spoil them even though they're not children any more. It was a lucky find, Eleanor's more eagle eyed than I am.

  5. Eleanor was very eagle eyed to spot that, we've never found one.
Mr cormorant looks very regal waiting for you to snap his picture.

    1. I've never found a pebble with a hole in it either, though I must admit that this was the first time that I've looked for one. I think I'll be on the look out whenever I'm on a beach from now on though. I think cormorants look very prehistoric and their webbed feet look to belong to a different type of bird.

  6. Good post and pictures. Well done Eleanor on finding a holed pebble. Next time you'll have to specify what the prize will be. xx

    1. I definitely will, it was only supposed to be a bit of fun, though to be fair, I think Eleanor was having me on asking for the make up palette, she got a bit of a surprise when I said yes.

  7. Do you have plans for your stone?

    1. None at all. I think Eleanor has brought it home with her but I don't know what she'll do with it, if anything.

  8. You need to visit Aldeburgh beach in Suffolk. It's all shingle and we used to pick up loads of hag stones with holes. I brought them with us both moves and they have kept away lots of witches!!

    1. I've heard how beautiful it is in Aldeburgh, it's somewhere I'd like to visit at some point. I didn't know that stones with holes in them are supposed to ward off witches, very apt as we approach Halloween.

  9. Beautiful colour nails but like you I know they ruin your own. Great challenge though, we do things like that with the grandchildren.

    1. I rarely use nail varnish myself and I always keep my nails short, the longer the better for Eleanor though. We've always played these kind of games when Daniel and Eleanor were children and it's still fun even though they're now adults.

  10. That reminded me of the time years ago when I went shopping with Stuart - I bought two scratch cards and said we would go half on any winnings. He scratched his- nothing. I scratched mine ..... £200, and yes, I kept to the agreement and gave him half!!

    1. Ha ha, that's typical, isn't it? Sod's law. I'd have kept to the agreement though too, I've always been a pushover where my kids are concerned.

    1. I know. I was having difficulty making out the pebbles, never mind looking to see if they had a hole in them.

  12. Ha ha! It is a beauty though, you'll have to turn it into something spectacular.

    1. The nails looked great when she first had them done, they were ready for coming off here. I don't know why she bothers though as her own nails were beautiful until she started with acrylics.

  14. Maybe you should make a limit on the cost of the prize - unless, of course, you won it yourself! LOL

    1. We'd seen the cormorant bobbing about in the sea just about every day so I was thrilled that he posed very nicely for me on that last day.

  17. That stone looks abit like a heart with a hole, but I suppose you thought more like a hole in your pocket later. Thanks for taking us along on your holiday & take care.

  18. I'm having trouble commenting on your posts again, it only seems to happen when I do it from work though, no idea why.
Well done Eleanor for winning the challenge, you will have to stipulate the prize next time, lol

  19. Ah yes! I had to laugh. We’ve been caught out with challenges like that before. Our children sound alike. Much loved, but merciless when it comes to winning family challenges :) x
