Wetherby is only a small market town and the number and range of stalls was very good, however, it was a bit of a shame that more stall holders didn't take up the Dickensian theme and dress in costume.
The prices were very good. We didn't buy much, just some cakes to take home with us, but I was tempted by the lovely cheeses and jams, not to mention the hog roasts.
There was musical entertainment too, a young girl singing and playing guitar whilst we were there but I believe Wetherby Silver Band and various choirs were performing throughout the day.
It really wouldn't be a Christmas market without some of Santa's reindeers. I'm not sure which two these are but I don't think either of them were Rudolph as neither had a shiny nose.
I haven't been to Wetherby's Farmers Market before. It regularly has around twenty stalls which are focused on food with a wide variety of meat, fish and vegetables and a range of baked foods and more exotic items. It's held on the second Sunday of each month. I shall definitely put it in my diary and go again.
It often seems that farmers markets are a bit hit or miss, but clearly this is a good one well worth visiting. Flighty xx

DeleteWhat a lovely market. I wish we had more things like this. I especially love the table with the plants on it. Those amaryllises were tall! Mine is only about half that tall yet, I hope it keeps growing. How fun to have reindeer there too. I realized recently that my daughter seems to think reindeer are make-believe, since she's never had a chance to see a real one. I hope we can remedy that before she gets much older. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I saw a reindeer until I was an adult but they seem to be a big attraction these days as events such as this. I've grown amaryllis in the past, they're wonderful plants and grow so fast.

I love cheese too and we very nearly succumbed but Mick's been stashing different types of cheeses ready for Christmas for the last couple of weeks so we resisted. The reindeer were lovely, there were lots of people admiring them.
DeleteI had a stall at a Christmas market some years ago with a friend - it was set in the time of Sir Walter Scott, and all the stallholders were dressed up. I thoroughly enjoyed it - despite being frozen!!
ReplyDeleteThey're great events, they get everyone in the spirit of Christmas. The weather wasn't too bad yesterday but I can imagine how cold it could get given proper winter weather.
DeleteDid you spot the stall selling honey and hand creams? That was my partner, Chris! He's been selling at Wetherby Market for most of this year, and hopes to continue next year, so if you go again you might see him. As well as 'normal' honey, he does flavoured ones, like lemon and cinnamon, and the creams, soaps and lip balms are made from beeswax and essential oils.
ReplyDeleteHe did try to be a bit 'Victorian' with a flat cap, but he says his ears got cold so he ended up wearing his beanie instead!
I did spot that stall. There were a few people testing his wares as we passed so I hope he did a roaring trade. I shall look out for him when we visit again, for we surely will, we thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a bit chilly yesterday so I don't blame him donning a beanie instead of a flat cap.
DeleteThanks for the photos of the market. I've been to Wetherby, but never the market. One of my favourite markets is Skipton, which I've been to several times when we've visited UK. I usually come away with something edible and souveniry! (is that a word?) You didn't buy any Wensleydale cheese? Love the reindeer and I've actually never seen them in the flesh. ReplyDeleteI very nearly bought some Wensleydale cheese, it's my favourite, closely followed by Lancashire (I know, a Yorkshire lass liking Lancashire, sacrilege), but we resisted. Grassington has a wonderful Dickensian market at Christmas and all the local shops take part too, it's a great day out, but it's a few years now since we've been.

DeleteSome of my writer friends have been renting booths at Christmas craft fairs and selling their books. They're meeting so many great people. I love things like farmer's markets, flea markets, and craft fairs. So many cool things you can't find in stores and you meet the most interesting people.
ReplyDeleteThere's some great markets and craft fairs around these days, they're a great outlet for anyone wanting to sell handmade creations. There was a stall selling handmade crafts on Sunday.
DeleteWetherby looks really nice.... When my parents lived in Littleborough we used to go over the moors to various Yorkshire towns, but I don't think I've ever visited. I bet it was really festive. Jx
ReplyDeleteWe don't live too far away from Wetherby so we visit fairy regularly, it has some lovely independent shops, though I'm sad to see so many of them closing down. I think the market is a great addition to this town.

ReplyDeleteThank you, I do enjoy knitting and crochet. I used to knit in my teens but then didn't pick up my needles for about twenty years but I'm loving it again now. I taught myself to crochet a few years ago and I thoroughly enjoy that too.
DeleteI love a market too. I wouldn't have been able to resist that cheese! The farmers markets here are quite good, once a month but the regular weekly ones have died a death, sadly, due to the council putting the stall rents so high. Such a shame. xx
ReplyDeleteIt annoys me so much how councils are forcing out small businesses, not just the independent shops in local neighbourhoods but markets too. It's such a shame that people aren't able to trade because of high rents.
DeleteI love our local farmers market. The one you visited looks really good, I hope the market on other weeks is just as good. The Christmas market is definitely the biggest of the year but it still good year round :)
