Eleanor wasn't feeling well when she went to school on Wednesday. It was only 9.15am when I got the call from school asking me to go in and pick her up as she'd been sick all over the floor in reception. At least she'd managed to get out of the hall where all her year group were seated. It's not very often that Eleanor's off school, she goes in when she's feeling ill as she hates missing even a day. Both Eleanor and Daniel had 100% attendance last year, and Daniel had 100% attendance the year before that too.
We thought that Eleanor would be fit to return to school yesterday, but she was still throwing up in the early hours so that was ruled out. Luckily, today was a teacher training day so she hasn't missed too many lessons.
So what to do when your gorgeous girl is feeling under the weather. Snuggle up on the sofa under a crochet blanket and put Pride and Prejudice in the DVD player.
Eleanor is currently studying Pride and Prejudice and Romeo and Juliet in English, and she's having to make comparisons between the two, so I thought it quite educational to indulge. But I have two adaptations so which to watch.
Who's your Mr.Darcy? I have to say that Matthew Macfadyen was my favourite ever character in Spooks, but for me, Colin Firth will always be my Mr.Darcy. We watched the DVD over three days, and I loved it. At the wedding scene, Eleanor commented that Darcy's face hadn't yet cracked a smile. I replied that he was handsome and smouldering. Moody and irritating was her reply.
Hmmm, she'll learn.
Lucky Eleanor to be studying Pride and Prejudice! I studied it at college ( when I was 40!) and wrote a 3000 word essay on Austen's use of letters in the novel. I found the BBC adaptation to be very close to the book - Alison Steadman brought Mrs Bennett to life brilliantly! I have never watched the film. My tutor who was an Austen specialist ( and who had called her daughter Lizzie!) didn't like the film at all. I found Darcy to be a combination of both yours and Eleanor's opinions!
ReplyDeleteI've never read the book, though I do intend to do so in the not too distant future. I think both adaptations have lots to offer, though of course, I can't comment on whether they're true to the book or not. I think Alison Steadman is brilliant in the role of Mrs.Bennett, fantastic casting.
DeleteOoh yes, Colin Firth every time, although I haven't actually seen the other actor! I love him in Bridget Jones' Diary as well. He's Mr Darcy in that as well! We've had sickness bugs too, I think it must be going around. Hope Eleanor feels better xxx
ReplyDeleteI thought it very funny when it came to light that Colin Firth was Mr.Darcy in Bridget Jones'Diary too. That's a great film, and I really enjoyed the book as well. Eleanor is much better, thank you for asking.
DeleteI've never read the book either, but I do plan to at some point! I've seen the film, and loved that, but as yet i've never watched the TV series, think I will try and fit that in over the xmas hols with a large tin of chocolates x

DeleteColin Firth as Mr Darcy but . . . . only seen him in Bridgets films - we have Pride and Prejudice on DVD so there's no excuse for not seeing it - really need to manage my time better! Glad Eleanor is feeling better, not long till half term now - we have another week to go, Helen :]]

DeleteIt has to be Colin Firth for me. I love the BBC series and watch it on DVD as often as I can. I enjoyed the film as well but the ending left a lot to be desired in my opinion. The ending that was made for the US market was much better and can be seen on youtube.

DeleteDo you know I think I may put that BBC series on my Christmas wish list. I loved CF in that, I haven't seen the other movie so I shall keep my eyes peeled in the charity shops.
