Laundry Day

I can't believe that I'm still hanging washing on the line in November. The weather is still rather mild and so, while ever I can, I'll continue to dry my washing outdoors.

I don't think you can beat line-dried washing for freshness, and it saves on energy costs too. At a time when many people can't afford the cost of running a tumble dryer, these mild days are a blessing.

I stripped the bed yesterday and got it pegged out first thing. Of course, we were forecast rain later in the day so I brought it in just after lunch time as were were going out and I didn't want it to get wet again. It only needed an airing indoors. Getting the washing outdoors for even a short spell saves having it hung around the house wet or having to use the tumble dryer.

I know some people use the tumble dryer even during the summer months. What about you, are you still pegging out or are you drying indoors now?

  1. As long as the weather's dry I peg washing out all year round, washing goes on the clothes horse when I get it in. I only ever use my tumble dryer to finish things off

  2. Your weather yesterday was a lot different to here - it poured nearly all day. I'm still trying to match washing days to dry days, usually lucky

  3. I'll hang the washing out if it's dry and there's a breeze. I don't hang it if there's no breeze - it just hangs there looking at itself until I go to bring it in and have to tumble dry it anyway. I do prefer sheets to go outside. There's nothing quite like getting into a bed where the sheets have dried outside! It's pouring rain here today so I've not done the washing - hopefully it'll be dry tomorrow!

  4. Lucky you, we have had heavy rain for 3 days and it's still raining today. We too like to use our line when we can, I love seeing our white bedding outside, and it smells much better.

  5. With a large family I do a couple of loads of washing a day so I am permanently checking the weather forecast and if its dry its out on the line.

  6. Indeed mild weather is a blessing for drying the laundry.

  7. I've never heard the term peg out and where I live it is mild but very very humid, so I wonder if pegging out would even work? Food for thought!

  8. It's been a tad too windy here in Mid Wales today to be putting washing on the line! I'm hoping it calms down a little as I'm off to Manchester tomorrow.

  9. Always in the dryer for me. I've never liked the feel of clothes hung on the line. They feel stiff to me and almost everything needs ironed which if you get it right out of the dryer it doesn't. So to me, dryer makes more sense and is faster. Plus the iron takes electricity so I'm not sure you're ahead any. Two things I promised myself growing up at home #1 I would never do mashed potaotes again and #2 I would never hang things on a line. Did way way tooooooooo much of that in my growing up years. My Mom worked so I did lots of household chores. I'm happy to say, I've stayed true to the promise I made myself. I never peel potatoes and make mashed potatoes...so many other better ways to cook them. That's all we had at home it seems I OD'd on them, lol. The other problem I have with lined dried laundry are the birds! We have an abundance of birds that I doubt how clean some of the laundry would be after you brought it in. But, I am enjoying the milder weather many of us are having.

  10. Outside has always been my go to and I suppose I've always been spoilt with a verandah or sheltered area with a line of some sort to hang washing whether it be summer or winter rainy days. Also use a clothes airer for smaller items inside & in winter it goes next to our wood burner. Tumble dryers chew up an excessive amount of electricity & although I have one, it is the same age as our youngest & you know how old that is. It still works if I am desperate. Take care, enjoy the mild weather & hugs.

  11. You can't beat line dried washing for freshness.

However, your weather sounds a lot better than ours.
We've had a lot of rain ... still at least many of the hosepipe bans have now been lifted!

    Have a good week.

    All the best Jan

  12. I am still pegging out as much as I can. Tumble drier has been pretty much redundant this year. Washing that has been dried outside smells wonderful :-)

  13. My friend uses a tumble dryer all year round. I don't understand why, as I love the smell of line dried laundry. Not that I have a choice, as I don't own one :)

  14. I'm doing both Jo, just like you I much prefer to peg my washing out. I've got a load on now, will peg it out and probably tumble some of it for 10 minutes or so. Every bit of saving and no waste of energy is paramount for us all. Little wins. x

  15. Definitely always hang the washing out, don´t even own a tumble dryer. With our temps here it usually dries quite quickly although sometimes it has to be finished off on the horse xcx

  16. I agree that there's nothing like the freshness of line-dried laundry. However, few people I know peg out the wash. I did when I first came to this country, but it wouldn't dry in the summer due to the humidity nor in the winter because of the freezing temperatures. And then there's the rain. In addition, my family has allergies that are aggravated when sheets were dried outside. But I miss it! Thanks for the memories, Jo. P. x

  17. I love to get my washing hung out on the line, I was so happy today because I was able to actually do a wash for the first time in two weeks after getting my kitchen done, it was only out a couple of hours before it started raining but they were half dry at least. I can't remember when I used my tumble dryer last. x

  18. I'm with you, Jo! Our weather is mild to hot year round and I peg washing whenever I can. One of the more satisfying chores for me.

  19. I love the smell of outdoor-dried washing, however I don't like the having to put it away the same day, I prefer to use an airer indoors and then I can just leave it overnight

  20. Alas our winter and snow is here so I am drying inside for the next few months. I don't own a drier so can't fall behind with laundry in the winter as my drying place has limited capacity.

  21. Would you believe we are not allowed to hang out washing in our neighborhood? It's been like that since we lived here 30 years ago, and we are not alone, other neighborhoods too. When I see washing hanging out on the line in the country, where there are no Home Owner's Association Rules to comply with, it always brings a big smile and a touch of nostalgia, as was your photo to me. I remember Mum's washing on the line, and the smell on the sheets so fresh and full of sunshine. As you say, you just can't beat that smell.

  22. Yes, I am still line drying here on dry days, I have had mine out drying today as it has been a fine sunny day. I don't own a tumble drier and would never consider drying one as they use so much electricity. I have a sheila maid type drying rack in my bathroom which I use on wet days.
