I promised myself that I'd be organised this year and have everything ready for Christmas early but, so far, I've done very little towards the big day. There's now less than six weeks to go, and though that may sound like plenty of time, it will slip by in the blink of an eye.
One thing I have been doing is having a look through my Delia's Happy Christmas book. I don't do very much baking, mainly because if it's there I'll eat it, so I tend not to make many sweet things. Christmas is different though, I'm allowed plenty of treats.
It was only two years ago when I discovered I like Christmas cake. I tried it as a child, proclaimed it wasn't for me and never tried it again until I wondered if my tastes had changed, and indeed they had. I won't be making my own Christmas cake though, it's really not worth it when there's only me in the house who eats it, but Mick's auntie is a wonderful baker and has promised me some of hers. I do think that this photo of Delia's looks delicious though.
Something else I've only recently discovered I like, after a childhood of picky eating, are mince pies. Last year, after this new revelation, I went through packets of them, all bought from various supermarkets. This year I intend to make my own.
I do love my crumbles in different guises but how does Chocolate & Sour Cherry Crumble sound to you? I have to admit it sounds right up my street. I don't think crumbles ever look particularly appealing but the taste and texture usually makes up for that. I think the combination of chocolate and sour cherry will work wonderful together so this is one I must try.
After a big dinner on Christmas Day, the last thing I want to be doing is cooking more big dinners in the days that follow so I admit that we let things go a bit in the cooking department and we eat easy things or picky things. Parmesan Twists are a favourite of the cheese lovers amongst us, there being only one who doesn't like cheese (how any child of mine can grow up not liking cheese I'll never know!). These will definitely be on the list of things I must make, Eleanor would never forgive me if her favourites weren't available.
I'm quite partial to a meringue and so are others in the household so I might give these Petits Monts Blancs a whirl. They look quite special with the sparkler in them. I'm not too sure about the sweetened chestnut puree that they're filled with though, I've never tried that before, I wonder what it's like. Does anyone know? I could always do meringues filled with something I know everyone will like and enjoy. That's the beauty of recipe books, they can give you inspiration even if you don't follow the recipes to the letter.
There's lots of other lovely things in this book, some of which I might have a go at, assuming I can get everything else that I need to do done in time. Wouldn't it be good if we could extend the days a bit at this time of year.
Chocolate & Sour Cherry Crumble sounds absolutely delicious. I used to bake lots of mince pies but never Christmas cake or pudding. I'm the one who will eat almost anything and I do have a sweet tooth but hubby is the fussy eater so I don't do much baking anymore. He doesn't like cheese either, I'm with you, how can that be! Everything in the photos looks delicious. By the way, so far I have only bought presents for the pup haha :)
ReplyDeleteGood old Delia, she's always got a good recipe up her sleeve! I usually get a jar of M&S mincemeat and add a few extra cherries and almonds. Chocolate and sour cherries go so well together, what a good idea to add some crumble too. I used to use the chestnut puree to make a chocolate mousse many years ago which we all used to enjoy but like you, I've cut right down on making sweet things especially since the children have left home.

ReplyDeleteI have a Christmas book of Delilah's which used to be my Mothers I often look at the pictures but that's as far as it gets. I did make lots of mince pies last year and they were yummy. The crumble sounds interesting, I haven't heard of sweetened chestnut puree. There's never enough time no matter how early you start. xx
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a lot of cooking and I wouldn't be able to keep my paws or jaws off it. My favourite sweet Christmas "thing" is mince pies but I buy them. And not for quite a while yet!

ReplyDeleteI work on the same principle when it comes to baking although I make snacky things like biscuits and flapjacks to munch in the car after Ruby’s walks. My sister is a good cake maker so we are treated to a slice when we go to her house.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you might be busy in the coming weeks. I remember watching Delia cook on some show way back & had forgotten all about her. I've always loved fruit cake & will make mine closer to Xmas as it can get so warm over here (ha-ha, it's certainly not so far), but I don't attempt tarts any more as there are only 2 of us most of the time. You could have a mince tart with a cup of tea! Sorry, just being facetious(smile).Fancy not liking cheese, though DH wasn't keen when we first met 46 years ago, but now likes it. My favourite crumble is rhubarb & apple & how about a blob of lemon curd atop the meringues. Take care, stay safe & hugs.
ReplyDeleteI have that book! And Mary Berry, Nigella Lawson, James Martin and a few others that I can't remember right now. I feel the need to go and look through them all ... not to make anything because, like you, we'd just eat anything I make (kind of the point but you know what I mean!) 🎅🏻🎄
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a Christmas cake since I lost my mum in 2015. She was a baker and confectioner by trade and always made the most deliciously moist Christmas cakes using her own secret recipe - and not a hint of booze in any of them. I don't bake myself and I know shop bought ones will never be as good as my mum's so I don't bother buying them.

I do like making things from scratch, but I tend to buy most things as long as they are good value, delicious and don't have any palm oil/fat in them. This year I have purchased a Christmas pudding from Iceland, the ingredients look good, it has a Good Housekeeping taste award, no palm ingredients and cost £4.95. Perfect. jean

It's quite frightening the speed that Christmas is coming ever nearer. I have actually made a start with the Christmas shopping and bought some cards too.

ReplyDeleteI love Christmas cake and made one a couple of years ago but ended up eating it all myself as Mark doesn't really like it! I love mince pies too but I find that the pastry doesn't agree with me now, although I'm ok with the gluten free ones, so should perhaps make my own this time. We do the same over Christmas, lots of picky foods and easy meals.
