It's so handy having a blog when you want to check back on dates. It was just the other day that I was thinking it must be coming up to Mick's auntie and uncle's diamond wedding anniversary soon. I knew I'd blogged about their golden anniversary as the blog post I wrote about the Golden Wedding Hamper we'd made for them at the time has been my most popular post ever and still gets hits on a daily basis. I was quite surprised to discover that the anniversary is just a couple of weeks away, thank goodness that it had come to mind when it did otherwise I might have missed it.
I rang his auntie to ask if anyone had arranged for them to receive an anniversary message from The Queen, a tradition which goes back to 1917 whereby messages on behalf of The Queen are sent to those celebrating their 100th and 105th birthdays and every year thereafter, and those celebrating their diamond wedding (60th), 65th, 70th wedding anniversaries and every year thereafter. I believe the cards containing a personalised message and which come in a special envelope are sent automatically for birthdays but an application needs to be made by a friend or relative in advance of the special day for anniversaries. They have two sons but neither had made the application so I told her to leave it to me and it's now all organised. It would be such a shame for them not to receive this special card.
We haven't visited a garden centre since before Christmas but I wanted to see if our local one had any appropriate rose bushes in stock which we could buy for them as a gift for their anniversary so we had a quick trip yesterday. I was really impressed with all the plants they had on offer, they seem to have stocked up for the new gardening season, but especially so with their roses, quite an extensive choice and I managed to find the perfect rose, a pretty pink patio rose suitable for borders, pots and tubs called Diamond Wishes.
I just need to find a nice card for them now, which is easier said than done with all the card shops being closed in lockdown.
The rose looks lovely, Jo. I'm sure your Aunt and Uncle will appreciate it as well as a card from the Queen! Congratulations to them on such an amazing number!
ReplyDeleteGood job you thought to get that special card organised, I'm sure they will be thrilled to bits to hear from The Queen on their diamond wedding day.
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty pink colour, I do love Roses, and I'm sure they will too. Good job on organizing the card from the Queen it would have been a shame for them to miss out. Were lucky that all our local garden centres carry a good selection of cards, it's where I've gone for the last couple I've had to buy. X
ReplyDeleteGlad you could get a rose from the nursery as a present. Have you tried your local newsagent for cards & some of our supermarkets keep them too. Maybe you could make one? You are such a thoughtful person & I'm sure they'll be chuffed to bits with gift & cards, especially from the Queen. Take care, stay safe & huggles.
ReplyDeleteWe no longer have a local newsagent, it closed down a while ago. I've looked in the supermarkets I've been in and they haven't got a very good selection. I'll find one from somewhere.
DeleteJo, you can order a special frame for the card from The Queen. We got one for my parents when it was their anniversary, and my Mam was as pleased as punch having it up on the wall for all to see. I have been buying cards from e bay during lockdown and will probably continue when shops are open again as they've been much nicer cards.
ReplyDeleteYes, my mum and dad had a frame for the card they received from The Queen, it does really set it off. I've also bought a couple of cards from online retailers during lockdown, I'll probably do the same again as their anniversary is before non-essential shops are due to open.
DeleteThe rose looks lovely, and what a very appropriate name too. I hope you manage to find a suitably nice card from somewhere, I don't know if you have a Range store near you but ours usually has some quite nice cards - much better than Asda imo :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a perfect gift for the occasion. I'm sure your Auntie and Uncle will be thrilled with the gift plus a card from the Queen, their anniversary will be really special.
ReplyDeletethats a lovely thoughtful present x
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful rose. I'm sure they will be thrilled with it.
ReplyDeleteYes you are right Jo having a blog comes in handy sometimes I often check back, it's like a diary really.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you could get a card from the Queen for those anniversaries, that's lovely! The rose is beautiful they are going to love it. I have been buying my cards online because I find the cards that are available in the supermarkets are usually not that nice. x
We arranged for Nan & Grandad to have a card from the Queen for their 60th & 65th wedding anniversaries, but sadly the Queen wasn't sending them when it was their 70th wedding anniversary last June. I don't think there was a special message though (but the photo on the front was updated).
ReplyDeleteGarden centres aren't allowed to open here in Wales, so I'm eagerly awaiting for them to be allowed to open as I want to get something in memory of Nan like we did with Grandad.
I hope you're well.
Well done on getting the card organised.
ReplyDeleteThat looks a lovely rose and what a beautiful colour.
All the best Jan
I've been buying birthday cards online - there are quite a few sites that sell them and post them out for you or send to your own address.
ReplyDeletewell done for sorting the card and they will love that rose bush its fab.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lovely rose and what a wonderful tradition from the Queen. I think all countries should have something like that to celebrate the "specialness" of such milestones. And I think you are definitely talented enough to make them a wonderful card!
ReplyDeleteWell done on being so organised. My grandparents were bowled over when they received their anniversary card from The Queen and when my grandfather later went to live in a home, after my grandmother had died, he took that card with him and kept it up in his room because it was so special to him. For special anniversaries I use Moonpig to make cards using photos of the wedding and I wondered if you would consider doing that? x
ReplyDeleteSomething like Moonpig would be good but I don't have any photos of Mick's auntie and uncle on their wedding day, in fact, I haven't got many photos of them at all, and I wouldn't want to have to ask them to borrow them. I'm sure I'll be able to order a nice card online.
DeleteHow lovely that you've sorted a card from the queen for them. That's a lovely rose too. All the very best to them.xxx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful gift, so lovely you managed to organise that special card from the Queen. My grandparents received one on their 60th, absolutely thrilled with it. They were married in 1927 on Easter Sunday, it was the last time weddings were held on Easter sunday, they had 2 vicars and there were about 8 couples all being married at the same time. The event even hit the papers. Hope you manage to find a nice frame and cards for them. xcx
