Incy Wincy Spider

I have a phobia of spiders. I'm not quite so bad if I see them outdoors but indoors they reduce me to a quivering wreck. So it's just as well that this little guy is currently living in a web he's made between two pots of geraniums outside my back door.

He's been there for ages. I don't mind just so long as he stays there and doesn't venture indoors. After I'd taken this photo Archie came to see what I was doing and swished his tail right through the web. The spider inched his way up a strand of the web which was still attached to the geranium and crept inside the flower. The following morning he'd spun himself a new web so he's still in residence.

Indoors, we've had some whoppers. A couple of weeks ago I walked into the bathroom to find the biggest spider I've ever seen running around the washbasin. Eeek, it makes me squirm just to think of it. I shot out of the bathroom I can tell you and Mick was left to deal with it.

Are you afraid of spiders?

  1. I'm not too bad with wee ones but big ones is another thing altogether. I remember going to a butterfly farm when the girls were small and there was a tarantula in a glass case. The glass was about half an inch thick but I was frozen to the spot and couldn't go anywhere near it! Shudder!!

  2. I am petrified of spiders but since my husband passed away 4 years ago I have had to get used to dealing with them as I live alone now. Heather

  3. Terrified of them, can't stand to see them and if they are moving I'm gone. Not so bad in the garden, but at this time of year they are everywhere. I'm the same with slugs, they are horrible.

  4. We always call September spider month, they seem to come out of the woodwork then. Bertie chased one a few weeks ago, it ended up clinging to his nose, it was hilarious. Jo, as I know you are a great sock knitter can you recommend a pattern to get me started please. Plus some say 4 needles some say 3, this is what confuses me. Your help would be gratefully received.

    1. Have a look at Winwick Mum blog. Click on the Join the Sockalong! tab at the top. The sockalong was finished a long time ago but all the information about knitting socks is still there. You'll find everything you need to know about knitting socks there and there's also a basic pattern too. Christine also tells you about the different needles you can use, it doesn't have to be double pointed, you could use a long or short circular needle if you prefer that. As for 4 or 3 needles, you usually have your stitches spread out on three needles and use the fourth to knit with, though some people prefer to have their stitches spread on four needles and knit with a fifth, it all depends on what you're comfiest with. I spread mine on three needles and knit with a fourth, but I've also started using a long circular needle too and I'm enjoying using this method. If you need any further help just let me know.

  6. She’s a garden spider and they don’t really venture indoors. That is as long as Archie doesn’t give it a piggy back. Lucky Ruby didn’t see it or she would have eaten

  7. I sympathise. They generally don't worry me too much. I find the webs they weave fascinating, and feel a bit guilty when I accidently destroy any. xx

  9. I am terrified of any spider bigger than a 1p coin. Last week whilst tidying our bedroom, I picked up hubby's joggers off the floor only to see a large spider on them. I threw the trousers back onto the floor and froze! I ingeniously saw my jar of cotton wool balls and emptied it and then covered the spider on the trousers, making sure no gaps appeared. I sat there for 2 hours until hubby came home!! It went on its merry way in the garage!!

  13. I'm the same & not good with big hairy ones like our Huntsman, but small ones I can tolerate though not Daddy Long Legs as they make such a mess. I had the weeist one on my hand in the car the other day (about the size of pin head) & it actually tickled. Take care, stay safe & huggles.

  14. heheheheeee I am not. But my husband is. When I had my son he loved all insects. He had me pick up a daddy long legs spider to put in a jar for him. Amazing what you will do for your kids. :)

  15. I don't mind spiders at all, either indoors or out, and have no problem picking them up. My friend round the corner has a spider phobia and will freak out at even the smallest one - I dislike slugs so we have a deal, I move her spiders and she moves my slugs :)

  16. Spiders themselves don't usually bother me but their webs do not last long inside!

  17. Goodness, it looks ENORMOUS! I don't have a problem with spiders, yours looks a particularly beautiful one.

  18. I'm not afraid of them but they do make me jump sometimes! We live quite close to fields so at this time of the year we get some whoppers in the house. They tend to be those ones that bounce on spindly legs, though - I much prefer the ones that look like yours! xx

  19. I don't mind spiders, I am the one that has to move them in my house as no one else likes to. Your photo is amazing, it is looks a little like the spider I took a photo of recently, the stripes are amazing.

  20. I used to be, but now can pick them up. Don't know what brought about the change. Beetles give me the shudders though.

  22. I am not afraid of spiders but I wouldn't list them in my top 10 of favourite animals.... They are rather fascinating creatures, we have a couple of spider books in our shelves.

  23. I'm okay with garden spiders because they are outside, generally large and bright enough for me to see them before I'm on top of them (or they are on top of me!) and I know they eat other bugs but indoor spiders.... We get big wolf spiders here. Two particular ones come to mind. Once, I came home from work and the one dog was in the dining room growling and the other met me at the door doing the "something's wrong" bark. I thought maybe a racoon or possum... had come through the dog door. Nope. It was a Huge wolf spider and he was so big, the dog was growling at it. Another time, when my husband was out of town and I was unprotected, I found another HUGE wolf spider in our front hallway. I put a coffee cup over him and his little feet were sticking out because he was so big. Then he proceeded to drag that coffee cup around the hallway for the next 36 hours until my husband got home to deal with him. OMG! It was horrible. I can still hear the coffee cup dragging across the wood floors. Aaack!!!

  24. Our garden is full of those spiders too, I keep accidentally breaking their webs as I walk around. I get fed up with the endless webs in the house, we seem to have spiders everywhere. That comment about the wolf spider under the coffee cup was hysterical!xxx

  25. I'm not as afraid as I used to be. I don't mind them now as long as they keep a good distance. I don;t like seeing close up photos where you can see hairy legs, markings, and faces, and beady eyes - those make me shudder!
    xx
