A new zero waste shop opened nearby recently and at the weekend we finally managed to find time to pop in. What a lovely surprise we had.
It's such a well stocked shop, so many more products for sale than we'd imagined. There's dry food, everything from pasta to granola, many different kinds of nuts, dried fruit, all different kinds of flour, every spice you can imagine, and they also have a great range of eco friendly products too, reusable make up remover pads, bamboo toothbrushes, metal straws, reusable sanitary products, bamboo lunchboxes to name just a few.
You're able to take your own containers or use paper bags. There's also a very good selection of reusable containers for sale too.
There's a whole section of cleaning products as well as toiletries, soaps and body washes.
The shop has been opened by a local couple who are very friendly and knowledgeable about their products.
I like the idea of being able to purchase just the amount you need, it cuts down on food waste. Also, you don't have any unwanted packaging here. The prices compare very favourably with those in the local supermarkets, which is really good. It seems to be very popular already and it's somewhere I shall definitely be shopping in the future.
Years ago there used to be a shop in one of our local towns that used to sell loose things such as cereal, flour, washing powder, we called it the scoop shop :-) We have nothing like this near us, it would be great for things that you only need a little of, like spices, instead of buying a jar. wouldn't it be lovely if every town had one? I'm sure they would be very popular for people who lived on their own too who don't want to buy big packets and jars of things. Hope they catch on.
ReplyDeleteI remember one of those shops too, though in those days it was more about saving money by buying just the amount you needed rather than cutting down on packaging. I think more and more of these shops are popping up as people become more aware about the need to cut down on plastic and other non-recyclable materials.
DeleteLucky lucky you, we have nothing like this here, it looks brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI was very pleasantly surprised, I wasn't expecting the shop to be as well stocked as it is, there's a lot of things that I'll be able to buy from here instead of the supermarket.
DeleteThe store looks great. Unfortunately, the nearest one to me is quite sparse, with little choice. I use it when I can, however. X
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame, perhaps they'll start adding to the amount of things they stock if people use it and it becomes popular. This one seems to have attracted a lot of attention from local people so I do hope it's used by many of them.
DeleteA shop like this has opened near us recently too, they are like a treasure trove aren't they. Yours looks a bit better stocked than ours, my local one is mostly about food. I have been using it loads and love that you can take your own container in, you just need to be organised!
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting as many food, cleaning or non-food items when I visited, I was surprised on all levels. The couple who own it are really friendly too and are open to suggestions of other products they can get in. I do agree that you have to be organised, though they do have paper bags if you do forget a container.
DeleteIt's an excellent idea, and I'd like to see lots more shops like it. If there was one local to me I'd certainly use it. xx
ReplyDeleteI think more and more of these type of shops are popping up all over. I shall definitely use it as part of my main shop.
DeleteMy nearest is in Penrith - I don't think a 70 mile round trip counts as environmentally friendly :-( I am envious of yours, looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteI know we're so lucky to have such a well stocked shop on our doorstep, I do hope people use it.
DeleteNever heard of this ! WOW. You opened my eyes!!
ReplyDeleteThese type of shops are springing up all over the place here, it's good to have one so close by, I know it'll get well used by us.
DeleteWhat a marvelous idea, Jo. I wish it would catch on here. It would be great for seniors like me -- I'm always complaining that I can't use all the amount in a regular sized packet. Also, it's so important for the environment.
ReplyDeleteBTW -- I just finished reading Nella Last's War. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hadn't heard of the Mass Observation Archive. Thanks for your review -- I would not have known about it otherwise. P. x
There's so many reasons why these type of shops are such a good idea, and I love shopping local too instead of frequenting large supermarkets, we're losing so many independent shops now. I'm so pleased you enjoyed Nella Last's War, I've put her next two books on my Christmas wish list, I really want to read those now.
DeleteBuying the amount you want and will use, is a wonderful idea. So much waste is caused, by not being able to do so.
ReplyDelete🍂🍁🎃🍁🍂
It's a win win situation, we save money by buying the amount we need rather than large packets, we help the environment and we help the small shopkeeper.
DeleteI'd love one of these shops in town. There's quite a few empty shops that would be great for this. I also remember the Scoop Shops. Best, Jane x
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be more and more of these type of shops popping up and I think they'll get well used as people begin to understand about helping the environment. I think they're such a good idea.
DeleteA novel idea, first I’ve heard of such a thing.
ReplyDeleteI know there's one in Leeds market but I very rarely go into Leeds now that I don't work there. These type of shops are becoming very popular and more are opening up.
DeleteThat's brilliant, just what all the shops should be thinking about and it's so well presented too. I wish them lots of luck with their new venture and hope they get lots of regular customers.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it'll do very well, the owners are so friendly and very knowledgeable and they've stocked the shop really well but are open to ideas of other products they could sell. I really hope it takes off and that people use it.
DeleteI was really excited when I heard one was opening close by, I shall definitely use it.
ReplyDeleteWe used to have a local shop called Super Scoops which did this for years, up until just a couple of years ago. I used to go there all the time. I love the idea, but as someone who has developed allergies over the last few years, I'd be hesitant to use a shop like this now (due to potential cross-contamination).
ReplyDeleteI remember having a scoop shop nearby but that was years ago, and they supplied plastic bags to take home whatever you purchased. Nowadays it's all about reducing plastic use. I can understand you having to be very careful if you have allergies though.
DeleteI love that idea! The closest we have is Bulk Barn, which sounds exactly like your Super Scoops. I much prefer purchasing only what I need, although I find their prices all over the place, with some being a lot lower than grocery stores (esp. staples like herbs and flour) while others (nuts comes to mind) are significantly higher, which I don't really understand.
ReplyDeleteI've priced up things which we'll use a lot of and it looks as though I'll save money by buying them here, I really need to take a closer look at other things though. The non food stuff is priced really well too. I'm sure we'll use this new shop a lot. especially as it's so close by, I like to shop locally, especially in independent shops.
DeleteThat certainly looks brilliant and full of good things, and it's such a good idea too!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I was surprised at the range of goods on offer, I'm sure we'll be able to stock up on lots of things there instead of the supermarket.
DeleteOh I wish we had one of these this side of the Pennines - Lucky Leeds!
ReplyDeleteWe're so lucky to have it local to us. There's a shop in Leeds market but I seldom go into Leeds now.
DeleteSuch a wonderful idea, I bet that is really popular.
ReplyDeleteI hope so, it's good on all levels, we're lucky to have such a shop on our local high street.
DeleteWow!How wonderful! Here's to many more opening!xxx
ReplyDeleteIt's such a great shop to have close by.
