I've read a few books by Liane Moriarty and enjoyed them all so when I saw Nine Perfect Strangers for sale in a charity shop, I had no hesitation in picking it up.
I wish I could say that I enjoyed this book as much as I've enjoyed all the other books I've read by this author but I'm sad to say that it was a struggle to read. I started the book after reading a few fantastic books which I couldn't put down, I'd read each of them in just a few days, but this book took me between three and four weeks to read, and even then I had to push myself to read it.
"One luxury retreat in the middle of nowhere.
Ten days in which no one can leave.
Nine strangers seeking perfection.
And each discovering the perfect lie..."
I wish I could say that I'd recommend this book, but I really can't. I do recommend the other Liane Moriarty books I've read though and it won't put me off reading more from this author. Fingers crossed that the next book I read is a little better though!
I struggled with this book, the story line as it unfolded was strange, again I have read her other books and enjoyed them.
ReplyDeleteI was intrigued at the beginning but as the story unfolded it was just bizarre and totally unbelievable. Such a shame as I've enjoyed her other books.
DeleteI've seen so many negative reviews for this book so i have avoided it, like you, i have enjoyed all other LM books. It's disappointing when you have previously enjoyed an author and then the book is a let down. At least you didn't pay full price :-)
ReplyDeleteThere are some authors I read whose books can be a bit hit and miss, but this isn't just miss, it's way off the mark. You do right avoiding it, I wouldn't recommend it at all.
DeleteI totally agree. I would have usually abandoned it but I've really enjoy all the other Liane Moriarty books I've read so I wanted to see if it picked up. It didn't!
ReplyDeleteOh it is soooo disappointing, to have enjoyed a few books, and then, come upon a "clunker"! -sigh-
ReplyDeleteSince you really enjoyed other books by this author, I will look into her earlier books.
I am rather "treading water," with my reading right now. -sigh- Have a couple of books going, but without total Joy. -smile-
Good luck, next time!

It's a real shame when you're expecting something good and it turns out to be dud. It won't put me off reading more from her though as I really enjoyed her earlier books. I hope you manage to find something to get you back into reading again, I think you need to find something really gripping to kick start the mojo.
DeleteSuch a shame you struggled your way through the book and still didn´t enjoy it. Hopefully you will find another that is more riveting xcx
ReplyDeleteI hope so. I'm on with another Agatha Christie at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it.
DeleteI suppose they can't all be winners. I will often force myself to finish a book I'm not enjoying as I keep thinking it will get better...you just never know.
ReplyDeleteI do try to keep going with books but I should know by now that if you're not into them by half way, they're not going to improve.
DeleteI just love the fact that you have written about a book that you didn't enjoy. How refreshingly honest. Thanks, Jo. x
ReplyDeleteThis was a book I was really looking forward to reading but it let me down. I often read good reviews, and many of the books I put on my wish list come from those reviews, so I think it's just as important to say when a book hasn't been enjoyed.
DeleteOh dear, not one for my list then, thanks for the tip off. 🙂
ReplyDeleteThis is one book I'd definitely steer clear of, but saying that, I have enjoyed all the other Liane Moriarty books that I've read.
DeleteWhat a shame it doesn't live up to the other books. Being able to read a book in a few days is always a sure sign of a good book. Let's hope the next book you read is better!
ReplyDeletexx
I've just read This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay which I did read in a few days, I really enjoyed it. I'm on with another Agatha Christie now and she never lets me down.
DeleteIt's a shame when an author you read writes a book you don't like. I hope that it was a 'one-off' and you enjoy her next one. xx
ReplyDeleteI hope that's the case. I just can't understand where Liane Moriarty was coming from with this book, it's so unlike her others which I've really enjoyed.
DeleteYou did well to hang in there with a book you weren't enjoying. I don't have the patience for that. I give a yuk book 100 pages, after that it's on to another! I read from my Kindle these days so I can enlarge the print and I refuse to pay full price for books especially when there are so many free ones included with Kindle Unlimited. There's no guilt involved if I should decide to hit "delete".xx
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, there are so many good books out there to be struggling with one you're not enjoying, but I've read others by this author so decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. In hindsight I should have abandoned it as soon as I had reservations. I love my Kindle, it's brilliant when I wake in the night and want to read as I don't have to turn on the light and disturb Mick. I pick up a lot of bargain books for my Kindle too.
DeleteSuch a shame when you find a bargain for it to be a disappointment. I must admit I don't push myself anymore if I am not enjoying it I don't finish reading it.
ReplyDeleteI was really pleased when I found this book in the charity shop but I wish I'd left it on the shelf now. I'm quite choosy in what I read so it isn't often that I come across a book I don't enjoy. I thought I was on a safe bet with Liane Moriarty, sadly not.
DeleteI just listened to this book and I have to agree with you. I found it a bit ludicrous and fatiguing. I just wanted to get it done with.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one with this opinion. I read a few reviews online after I'd finished the book and many of them seem to be in the same vein, it's a shame I hadn't read them before I'd bought the book.
DeleteHow disappointing when all her other books have been so enjoyable. I am with mamasmercantile I don't bother to finish a book if I am not enjoying and have given it a good go.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see what she releases next. I do wish that authors wouldn't just churn out books for the sake of it.
DeleteI had the same problem with Maggie O'Farrell's last book (Me, Me, Me); I eagerly waited my turn for it from the library then just couldn't get into it at all and returned it mostly unread. I hate coming to the end of a really good read and having a lull before the next discovery - hope you find another good book soon!
ReplyDeleteIt's so disappointing when you either can't get into a book or you find it so dull that it's a struggle to read, especially when you've been on a roll of reading some good ones. I'm just about to start something new, I'm not sure what I'm going to choose yet but I hope it's good.
DeleteWell, I guess not all books can be winners … but I have to say if I find a book that seems hard going I rarely finish it, so you did well to persevere.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I only kept going with it because I've enjoyed this author in the past, I expected it to get better. In hindsight I should have stopped reading after a couple of chapters.
DeleteIt's always so disappointing when a book by a good author fails.xxx
ReplyDeleteIt is, I expected this to be really good but it was a let down.
