Another New Project

I've only recently told you of A New Cast On and now I've got another.

I won the What Lies Within Socks pattern by Naomi Buchanan in a giveaway hosted by Ali on the Little Drops of Wonderful podcast. This pattern comes from the Charmingly Magic Sock Collection which is inspired by the Harry Potter series. This is the second in the collection and is based on the basilisk which lies within the Chamber of Secrets.

I'm using Paperstories Sock Yarn in The Goblin's Revenge colourway which Mick bought me for Christmas 2017. It's such a pretty colour and I think a semi solid colourway will show off the cables in the pattern.

I usually use double pointed needles when I'm knitting in the round but I fancied having a go at magic loop. I've used this method when knitting larger items, such as hats and sleeves, but when I've had a go with it for sock knitting in the past I just couldn't get on with it. Never one to be deterred I decided to have another go so I asked on Instagram for needle recommendations and decided to go with Addi. I'm still not convinced with this method for sock knitting, I seem to be creating a ladder between each of the needles and I don't think my knitting is as neat as it usually is. I've only knit the cuff so far so I'll continue into the pattern and see what I think then. It may be that magic loop is just not for me, we'll see.

So that's two new projects on the needles but I'm not finished yet, there's still another waiting in the wings which I'll tell you about soon.

    1. I think I'm so stuck in my ways with double pointed needles, I find the cable gets in my way when using the magic loop method. I'm hoping I'll get used to it.

  2. Ooohhhh what lovely yarn! I love knitting in the round and the magic loop is my fave method. I haven't done any knitting for a good while as I don't actually need anything. My crochet is moving along slowly now the hot weather has passed. Best, Jane x

    1. It's a really pretty coloured yarn. I don't seem to have any bother using magic loop when I'm knitting something larger, it's just sock knitting that's causing me bother.

    1. I love the colour of this yarn. I don't think Paperstories dye yarn any longer, it's a shame.

  4. I'm confused, are you knitting these socks on just 2 needles?

    1. I'm using the magic loop method with a long circular needle. You split the stitches in half and then manipulate them along the cord in a way which enables you to knit a long tube, such as a sock.

    2. I think it is very hard to get a true red for knitting. Love yours

    3. This is a semi solid colourway so the depth of colour varies, but it's really lovely.

  6. I have made two pairs of socks with the Magic Loop. I found it difficult to get started but after that it was pretty easy.

    1. I knit the first two rows straight before joining in the round and found that easier than trying to join straight away but I'm still getting a ladder between needles. I probably just need more practice.

  7. I still haven't mastered sock knitting so I am in awe of your skill whatever the method. Love the yarn. Now I need to know what else you have planned you are such a tease.

    1. It's such a pretty yarn, I'm enjoying using it even if I am having problems with magic loop. I think you'll like my next cast on, I can't wait to get started on it.

  8. Maybe you need a really small diameter circular needle for socks, I've only ever used them for larger items. Lovely colour wool though.

    1. You can use a very small diameter circular needle for socks but you need a much longer one for the magic loop method which I'm trying to master.

  9. That is a gorgeous colour! Sometimes new ways of doing things just take a bit of getting used to. Then again, if you've given it a good try and still don't get on with it, why put yourself through the aggravation? That was my experience with continental style knitting - I really wanted to enjoy it, but just found it too awkward (although I'll still probably give it a go, every once in a while, just to see if things have changed).

    1. I love this colour, it's knitting up beautifully. I agree, I see other people using the magic loop method and they seem to get on with it so easily, but I'm not going to labour over it, I enjoy dpns so I've got those to fall back on if I can't overcome the awkwardness.

  11. I like the look of the wool, it's a smashing colour. I'm not sure I could knit something so small on a magic loop, I've only ever used them for a jumper. Hope it goes ok!

    1. It's a gorgeous colour. I'm fine knitting on circular needles 'in the round' it's just magic loop which is causing a few difficulties on socks.
