Archie enjoying the sunshine on Sunday.
We've always kept Archie's hair quite long, after all, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a long-haired breed, so when we take him to the groomers we ask for the hair underneath to be cut short as otherwise he ends up trailing twigs, leaves and goodness knows what else around in it, but we always ask for the rest of him to be just tidied up. We took him to a new groomer in January as his old one had closed down, she cut him fine so when he was due another trim about three weeks ago we decided to go back there. We explained exactly what we wanted and had every faith that he'd be cut to our satisfaction as he was last time but goodness me, when we went to pick him up my jaw nearly hit the floor. He'd been shaved to within an inch of his life! It took me just a moment to gather my composure and then, as I looked at him again, I decided I liked it. He looked so cute. I'm sure he's felt better having a short coat in the warm weather we've had since too. We've decided that we'll get him cut short again the next time we take him to be groomed. It did feel a little bit like that first baby haircut though, you know when you see your little cherub's curls all scattered on the floor. It's starting to grow back again already so it doesn't stay so short for long.
It was a gorgeous weekend. Mick was supposed to be playing cricket on Saturday but the match was called off as the other side couldn't get a team together so they forfeited the game. I thought I was to have the day to myself to enjoy the royal wedding but that wasn't to be. Instead, I managed to watch the ceremony and then taped the carriage ride as we wanted to get some errands run whilst we had chance.
I've been sorting out all my bedding so I had some old duvets and blankets to take to the Dogs Trust, I think the dogs there are thankful for donations. Of course, I couldn't leave without seeing all the doggies waiting for a home. They have two beautiful, friendly lurchers at the moment, George and Mildred, who I would love to have brought home with me, and they have many other dogs waiting for a forever home too.
We went to the other side of Leeds to a cricket shop as Mick needed some new cricket shoes and cricket pads, goodness, they're expensive! He needed them sooner rather than later though as the strap recently broke on one of his pads and he's been sliding all over the pitch in the shoes he's been wearing.
On the way home we called at the crematorium to take some flowers for my sister. I can't believe it's coming up to nineteen years since she died, it seems like only yesterday in some ways. I still miss her so much. We brought all the little ornaments we leave by her headstone home with us for a wash, we'll take them back the next time we visit.
Later in the day we went out for a meal, nothing special, just a pizza at Bella Italia. We like it there.
On Sunday it was time to get some jobs done around the house and garden but Mick took Archie for a lovely walk in the local woods first before it got too warm. Later in the day we had a drive to Lotherton where we enjoyed an ice-lolly while Archie enjoyed a run.
It was a busy weekend but it was good to get some jobs crossed off the list, we enjoyed a meal out and a lovely walk too.
Archie looks very sweet and his shorter than usual hair is possibly a good thing during this lovely warm spell of weather we're having.
ReplyDeleteI used to love it when I trimmed my dogs hair when the weather got warm - he looked all new and puppy like again.
You were very brave to go looking at the dogs in need of a home. I would have probably ended up taking one home with me. X
I think Archie's short cut has been a blessing during this warm weather and I have to admit that it does make him look cute, and as you say, puppy-like again. I always pop in to see the dogs whenever we visit the Dogs Trust, there were some spaniel cross puppies in this time and though they were very cute, it was George and Mildred who tugged at my heart strings.
DeleteNice post and lovely picture of Archie. Good to see that you enjoyed the weekend. xx
ReplyDeleteI usually take many photos of Archie before I get a decent one, it's not often he sits still long enough for his photo taking.
DeleteIt must be about 4-5 years ago that we started having the boys cut short. Romeo has a double coat so gets so warm, and they do look handsome when they come back. We call it their short back and sides but no it doesn't take long before its grown back through. They are already looking like they are getting ready to go and they aren't booked in for a while.

Getting Archie cut so short has been a happy accident and we'll definitely have him cut short again next time. I'm surprised how quickly it grows back though, I doubt it will be long before we're back to the groomers again.
DeleteYou did so much. I so love reading posts like this, about the minutiae of daily life. Thank you very much for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteMick usually plays cricket on a Saturday during the summer months so if the game ends up being cancelled for any reason we try to make the most of it and use the time for getting some errands run.
DeleteSounds like a lovely weekend!
ReplyDeleteSo happy you waited a minute, when you saw your doggie. And then realized, that you liked the short cut! :-) I'm sure he does too, in the warm weather. Can always let it grow again in the Autumn.
Your husband's cricket game called off, because other side couldn't get a team together. Sounds just like a "Midsomer Murders" episode. Love it.
Of course I don't mean... the murders in that show! I mean the delightful views of village life!
Blogging is so neat, in that it allows people, from different countries, to see life elsewhere. Love this aspect.
Gentle hugs,
A 'Nana' in the North East of the US
I think Archie has enjoyed being cut short this time, it's been a relief to him in the warm weather, he certainly looks tidier than usual anyway. Cricket does bring images of the typical English village green, doesn't it? That and afternoon tea, of course. You're so right about blogging, it's a wonderful way to see the way of life in other countries all around the world.
DeleteI´m sure Archie is feeling much more comfortable in the hotter weather in his new coat. xcx
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. He does feel the heat in his long coat and is always panting so he'll enjoy being cut much shorter.
DeleteWe are shaving Mickey off as there seems to be lots of ticks around at the moment. A great photo of Archie.
ReplyDeleteThat's something I've never thought about as we haven't come across ticks before but better to be safe than sorry.
DeleteWe used to get Rosie's hair cut short and she always looked like a puppy when we got her home again. Archie looks happy with his new 'do! :o)
ReplyDeleteAwww, I remember the photo of Rosie that you had on your header, she had short hair in that. I think this has been a happy accident as I'd have never asked for Archie's hair to be cut short but I really like it now it is.
DeleteArchie looks very handsome, if that's an after shot, his coat is still quite wavy and not like a shorn sheep. So sad that your sister died so young, you must miss her.
ReplyDeleteHis back is like a shorn sheep, though there's some little curls coming back now as it's growing so fast. I miss my sister very much, there were twelve years between us but we were best friends. I can't believe it's been so long since she died, that time has passed so fast.
DeleteI'm glad to know Archie is keeping well. He looks very handsome and I know he's much loved. The hair cut must have helped him feel more comfortable during the hot weather. I could do with getting a hair trim. Suddenly it gets just a bit too long and I have to tie it up. I'm glad you had a good weekend although it's a poignant time too thinking about your sister who you must miss all the time.
ReplyDeleteArchie had a birthday recently, he's eight now and starting to show his age, though he can be very puppy-like when the mood takes him too. There isn't a day goes by that I don't think of my sister, it was, and still is, such a shock losing her at such a young age, I thought we'd have years together but you just never know what's around the corner.
DeleteI bet Archie feels more comfortable with shorter fur especially in this warmer weather, but I can imagine how it must have been a shock for you.
ReplyDeleteI only caught a bit of the wedding, we were very busy on Saturday and to be honest I forgot all about it!
Honestly, my jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw him, in fact, I didn't even realise it was Archie at first. I'm pleased though now, I think he's been better in the warmer weather with a short coat and I think he actually looks quite cute. I didn't watch all the coverage of the wedding, just some of the ceremony and I skipped through the carriage ride later in the day. It was a lovely day for them though and I thought it was less formal than other royal weddings, which I enjoyed more.
DeleteJust caught up on your last few posts as we've been on a quick trip to Sydney for little brother's health problems & had not internet. Loved the spring flower post & isn't it awful when you suddenly get hooked on something different. Try not to at the moment,as I need to get quite a few things finished before I start anything else. Will be posting on Friday for the photo hunt & hopefully get back into posting,as I've quite a backlog of things. You were certainly busy over the weekend. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI hope you got everything sorted in Sydney that you wanted to. I used to have one project on the go at once but now I can't seem to stop starting lots of new things, oh well, variety is the spice of life.
DeleteYou've had a busy week for sure. My condolences for the loss of your dear sister. Not sure you ever get past all of that. Glad the trim ended up working out for you. Many of the English shows I've been enjoying make reference to the pitch. Not something I knew about before.
ReplyDeleteSandy's Space
I don't think the sadness ever goes away when a loved one dies, I still miss my sister so much and I'm always thinking about all the things she's missed out on. I'm not very with it about cricketing terms, I pick up odds and ends from Mick playing but I've never even watched a match from start to finish.
DeleteRe: Your comment in my blog... On a pretty Instagram.
ReplyDeleteI did! I fell down the rabbit hole of IG! :-) But then I climbed back out!
Open IG's can be viewed on my computer. Can't interact, but can view. So that is how I do it. :-)
Just sayin'......
Oh, I see. That sounds like a very sensible way to view the accounts.
DeleteWhat a lovely photo of Archie! I'm so glad you liked the new look, after the initial shock.
ReplyDeleteYou certainly fitted in some lovely things over the weekend with a meal out and a trip to Lotherton.
I'm sure the charity were very appreciative of your donations. Now you have room to buy and store some more!
Lisa x
It's amazing how quickly Archie's coat is growing again, at this rate he'll be back at the groomers again before we know it. Definitely no more storing things we don't need any more, my house is heaving a sigh of relief at every bundle that's removed from it.
DeleteArchie does look cute as a button - I'm sure you are right, he will be grateful for the shorter trim in the heat of summer. I didn't realize that you had lost a sister - my heart goes out to you on such an incredibly sad loss, so young she must have been.
ReplyDeleteArchie's fur is growing back now, I think he'll need another trim before summer is out but we'll definitely get him cut short again next time. My sister was twelve years older than me, she was just forty two when she died. One of the saddest things is that she didn't get to see Daniel and Eleanor grow up, as well as her own step children. She didn't have children of her own but she doted on all the children in the family. Eleanor is so very like her in lots of way, she was just under a year old when she died.
DeleteThat is such a lovely photograph of Archie, I'm sure he feels very happy with his hair cut!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly packed a lot into a few days.
Hope you enjoy the coming Bank holiday weekend.
All the best Jan
It's so hard to get a decent photo of Archie as he just won't sit still for two minutes when we're out and about. It's good to have a bit of extra time together to get some jobs crossed off the list, I'm hoping for the same again this weekend.
DeleteOne of the homes I visit have Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies, I got to hold one just hours ole. They are now about four weeks old and so adorable. Their eyes are open and their noses are starting to protrude a bit. Such sweetness! I enjoyed every minute of The Royal Wedding. It was just gorgeous in every way.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how you managed to escape that house without bringing one of those Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies home with you, I'd have been so tempted in your position. Mind you, I think you have your hands full enough with Bear and Hank. I think most people enjoyed the royal wedding, as you say, it was a wonderful day in every way.
DeleteAhh....what an adorable boy! I'm sure he feels cooler. Rescues always need bedding so sure they will be utterly delighted with your contribution.
ReplyDeleteI totally understand how much you miss your sister, life can be so cruel at times. You never expect to lose a sibling. xxx
I think Archie definitely likes having a shorter coat, especially in the warmer weather. We always take any old bedding to the Dogs Trust, they must go through so many blankets and duvets. I don't think you ever get over losing someone so close, it's coming up to nineteen years since my sister died yet I still miss her every day.
DeleteArchie looks smashing! It's a good job you liked his new haircut, but naughty of the groomer not to listen.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good weekend, a good mix of errands and nice things.
x
I've decided to let the groomer off on this occasion seeing as how I liked the cut, I wouldn't have been going back there if I hadn't. It's cricket season now so I take advantage of any Saturday that Mick isn't playing, jobs get tackled or an unscheduled trip takes place.
