Twinkle

When I saw these comics at a vintage sale I just had to buy them.

I remember reading Twinkle when I was a little girl, I loved all the characters in it but my very favourite was Nancy The Little Nurse. She worked at the Dollies Hospital where broken toys are mended with her grandad who is the dolly doctor, Mr Jingle. I even had a little dress up outfit like Nancy's.

Polly's Magic Painbox. Polly could paint a picture and it would come to life, very exciting.

Witch Winkle created havoc wherever she went, but it always turned out well in the end.

So many old favourites.

I used to love these cut out dolls. I'd cut out the clothes for them and then sit and dress them in different outfits for hours.

These three comics were dated 1977 and 1978, I would have been eight or nine when they were published. Did you have a favourite comic as a child?

    1. I remember being able to buy a book with one or two cut out dolls in and all the rest of the pages were clothes. I played with them and bent the tabs so often to keep the clothes on the dolls that they ended up tearing. I remember my mum trying to repair them for me.

    1. I have similar memories. I remember my mum often keeping little treats in a drawer for such occasions, she always had a comic or book in hand.

  3. Oh wow, I remember my younger sister having Twinkle while I read Bunty. I thought it was such a shame when I had my own daughter and couldn't find anything similar for her to read xx

    1. I don't ever remember reading Bunty. I had the same feelings about comics today when I was looking for them for Eleanor, I can't remember what she read now but I know it wasn't a patch on Twinkle.

  4. The Eagle, with Dan Dare, was my favourite comic. Flighty xx

    1. I don't think The Eagle was being published when I was of comic buying age, I remember The Beano and The Dandy though, in fact I remember getting The Beano annual one Christmas.

  5. I liked Little Lulu, Donald Duck and when I got older Archie.

    1. I've heard of Donal Duck, of course, but I didn't know there was a Donald Duck comic. I think I might have heard of Archie before, not sure where though.

  6. I've never seen Twinkle but it looks cute and I think I would have liked it. I didn't read many comics but I had some Archie comics digests that I enjoyed and I also liked some Garfield comic books that we had at school, I think. My husband loves comics (particularly The Far Side, Dilbert, Foxtrot and Calvin and Hobbes) and our son does now too. Hope you're having a good week so far, Jo.

    1. Twinkle was a lovely comic for little girls, it's a shame it isn't available any more. I've never heard of the comics your husband likes, not sure if that's because they're not available over here of just that they're not my kind of thing. I know there are shops devoted to comics, I've never ventured inside though.

  7. We had Bunty, which every week there was a paperdoll and cut out clothes.

  8. I remember Twinkle and the nurse but not sure how I know about it, unless it kept going for another 10 years then maybe my eldest would have had it when she was little.
Bunty also had a dress up doll back in the mid 60s, I remember drawing round the dresses to make more to cut out and colour and keeping them all in a little tin

    1. Apparently, Twinkle was published right up to 1999. What a great way of making more clothes, I never thought of doing that.

  9. Ooh yes, I loved Twinkle and Bunty too and, later on in the 70s, my favourite was 'Misty'. I've still got my Bunty annual from 1973 and the Misty ones from 1979 and 80.

    1. I remember Misty but don't remember having it. I was always bought an annual at Christmas, a tradition I continued with my own kids.

    1. They are cute. I think comics these days don't cater enough to the younger audience, they all seem to think younger kids are wearing makeup and know all about reality tv stars from the age of five.

    1. I don't think paper dolls are as common as they were, kids are dressing dolls on computers these days, sadly.

  14. It was The Bunty and The Judy for me (and my sister). My brother got The Beezer and our cousins who lived next door got The Topper, The Beano and The Dandy. Fun times! :o)

  15. Oh, I used to love Twinkle! I'd forgotten all about it until now, but just looking at your pictures brought it all back to me. When I was a bit older I used to read "Bunty" and "Mandy" before moving onto "Look In". Sometimes I'd get "The Dandy", "The Beano" or "Whizzer and Chips" - it makes me a bit sad now when I see the choice of comics that my girls get and how they're either linked to TV programmes or are very grown up at far too young an age xx

    1. Look In, I remember that one, I got it too. When I was older I read Smash Hits, Jackie and Just Seventeen, oh and Blue Jeans somewhere along the way too. That's exactly how I feel about the range of comics and magazines now.

  16. I'll admit to having never seen them, so maybe we didn't get them here in Oz, but gosh they look cute. I did have some paper dressup dolls and played with them a lot. Take care.

I haven't thought about 'Twinkle' in years, but your post brought it all flooding back. Happy memories!

  18. I used to read Twinkle I don't remember much about it now but I do remember the dolls that came with them to cut out and dress by folding over the little tabs that was my favourite bit.

    1. I'd forgotten lots of the characters in Twinkle but I never forgot Nancy the Nurse, she was always my favourite. I think lots of us loved those dress up dolls, it's a shame the kids of today don't have such simple pleasures as we did.

  19. I have so many memories of Twinkle, my dad taking me to the local newsagent to buy the magazine and every Christmas my nan buying me the annual. I can't remember if I still have them or whether I got rid of them but I had a collection from the year I was born until the early 90's and it was so funny how many of the stories I could remember.

  20. I remember Twinkle but I don't remember reading it myself. I loved those paper dolls though, so simple and hours of fun.

    1. I remember Bunty, Judy and Mandy but I don't ever remember reading them. It's funny how so many of us remember having comics as children but I don't think they're such a big thing these days, Eleanor was never really bothered with the offerings, her choices were made on the free gift which seems to come with them every week these days, rubbishy plastic toys or make up.

  22. Oh I remember Twinkle....my favourite part of this comic was the dolly hospital....this brings back so many memories of my lovely Nanna taking me to the village every weekend to put £1 in my bank account and a trip to the shop for a bag of sweets and my Twinkle comic. Happy Days!!! What a wonderful find. x

    1. It was my favourite part too, I used to dress up as Nancy the Nurse and have my dolls and teddies as patients in my hospital. The simple things we used to play as children, none of this electronic stuff they all have these days. I'm so pleased I found these comics, they've brought back lots of happy memories.
