Sandsend

One of the days out we had whilst staying in Pickering on holiday was to Sandsend, a village just north of Whitby.

The village has a fabulous beach and is divided by a stream which runs in to the sea.

It wasn't a brilliant day weather wise but nice enough for a walk on the beach, we were really surprised by how rough the sea was though, we've never seen it like this here before.

You could even hear the pebbles knocking together as the sea whipped them up before settling them back down on the sand.

It's a great beach for treasure hunting, you can find fossils here and I always come away with some sea glass to add to my collection. We all did a bit of beachcombing.

Even Archie did his bit.

The obligatory pebble stack. Well, there were so many pebbles about I just had to make one.

Eleanor had a bit of a paddle but Archie went one better, it's so hard to keep him out of water. Here he is shaking himself dry.

We love Sandsend, it's never once been busy when we've visited and it's a beautiful beach. This is another place I can recommend if you haven't yet been.

  1. It certainly looks, and sounds like, a good place to visit so I'm not surprised that you like it so much. Flighty xx

    1. It's only just up the coast from Whitby so we always visit if we've been to Whitby, if only to let Archie have a good run. It's a huge, open beach so it's great for dogs.

    1. It's not as popular or touristy as Bridlington, Scarborough or Whitby but we love it. There's only a few little gift shops and cafes but the beach is fabulous.

    1. I like places which aren't packed with tourists. Saying that, we do love Scarborough and Whitby too.

    1. I just had to make a pebble stack with all those stones around. Archie loves the beach, he always goes in the sea or paddles in rock pools then dries himself off by rolling in the sand.

    1. Archie had a brilliant time on holiday, what with the beach and Dalby Forest, he was in doggy heaven.

  6. What a pretty beach. I haven't been to many beaches. I think the only pebble beach I've seen is the one at Monterey, in California. It seems to be more common in the UK, I think. It looks like your family, and Archie, had a nice time. Hope you have a good week, Jo.

    1. There's lots of different types of beaches in the UK, pebble, sandy, shingle. Sandsend has pebbles around the shore but the rest of the beach is sandy with just the odd pebble here and there, it's a lovely beach.

  7. Thanks Jo. I think we've driven through Sandsend on our way to Staithes, but never stopped there. I love all the little towns on the coast north of Whitby, which are so cute conpared to anything over here. Take care.

    1. There's some lovely places along the Yorkshire coast. We've discovered more beaches since having Archie. Dogs aren't allowed on all beaches so we always have to make sure it's dog friendly before we take him on.

    1. It's a great beach. There's never many people on it so it's a lovely place to get away from it all for a bit.

  11. Jo,
Every year I absolutely LOVE seeing your holiday photos, the coast of England is breathtaking. Though I was in the UK for 2 months with my children this summer, I never had the opportunity to actually get to the coast, though we did talk about it. I will though, I have to, your photos are just breath taking! Much love, Tammy x

    1. We do have some beautiful coastline in the UK, beautiful villages and coves, we're very lucky. It's a shame you didn't get the chance to visit whilst you were here but I'm sure you'll manage it on another of your trips.

  12. Just catching up, after a busy few days! Love the stone stack, and glad you were able to add your seaglass collection - you can never have too much seaglass!! Years ago we had a cocker spaniel - she loved water ...... she would even lie down in a deep puddle on the pavement and try to swim!!

    1. I'm always on the lookout for seaglass when I visit a beach, I've got quite a bit in my collection now. Archie loves water, you can't keep him out of the sea when we go to the beach and he loves rock pools too, though muddy puddles will do when there's no clean water about.
