Southport

I like to make the most of any day out we have, especially if we travel any distance, so after visiting Another Place and North Meols, we decided to have a trip in to Southport. I've never visited Southport before so I was looking forward to seeing what it was like.

It was getting on in the day by now so we didn't stay long, but we did have a lovely wander round. We strolled through King's Gardens which is currently undergoing a £5 million restoration to its original historic design. There's a fabulous children's adventure playground here which was being very well used.

We always seem to find the crazy golf whenever we visit the seaside.

We paused for a while at Marine Lake to watch people taking rides on power boats as well as the more leisurely Lake Ferry Cruises.

There's plenty of traditional seaside attractions too. This is the most daring ride I go on these days, though I gave it a miss on this occasion.

We may have changed a pound coin or two in to 2p pieces to feed the shove machines. I can't visit the seaside without having a go.

There's an array of shops selling buckets and spades, rock, candy floss and all the other goodies associated with the seaside.

Lord Street is a Victorian canopied boulevard which has speciality shops and designer boutiques set amongst high street stores. We enjoyed having a browse, but I'd love to go back and explore the shopping here some more.

There are some beautiful Victorian arcades too.

So this brings us to the end of our day across the Pennines in Lancashire. We visited three very different places, but I always say that variety is the spice of life. I'd love to have a couple of days away here so that I could see more of Southport as well as visit North Meols again.

  1. Southport is lovely. We used to enjoy days out there, and when I was at uni and J had time off with KL, they used to drop me at uni in Ormskirk and have a day out in Southport. KL loved the 2p machines at the end of the pier.

    1. I'd heard how lovely Southport is so I've been wanting to visit for a while now. My post must have brought back some happy memories for you, I love looking back at the days out we enjoyed when the kids were younger. I can never resist the 2p machines.

  2. Ah, more crazy golf! You certainly managed to pack a lot into your day out, Jo! I've never been to Southport, even though it's not that far from me. Another one for the list.. Isn't that where the flower show is?

    1. Crazy golf just seems to jump out at us wherever we go. It really was a jam packed day out, one I'd like to repeat, though it might be nice to spend a couple of days in the area next time, there's plenty to see. Southport is where the flower show is, I'll make it there one year.

  3. A lovely 'day at the seaside' post. It's somewhere that I've never been to, and unlikely to now.
It's good to see that you enjoyed yourselves, and would like to go back.

    1. I think Southport is a place you'd enjoy. We didn't spend long here but I could see that it has some beautiful architecture and lots of places of interest. I'd definitely like to return and spend a longer time there.

    1. We packed loads in to the day so we only managed a couple of hours in Southport. It really wasn't long enough but it gave me a feel for the place and I know it's somewhere I'd like to explore more.

    1. We really did get everything out of it that we could. Apart from a day in Morecambe when I was a child, the only place I've ever really visited on this part of the West coast is Blackpool and St Annes, so it was lovely to do a bit of exploring somewhere else along the coast.

  6. When I lived in Manchester we visited Southport many times especially when the kids were still heavily involved in Gymnastics. Many a Sunday morning was spent traveling up in the car to take part in competitions there. Lord Street is fantastic I love all the old type shops they have (that's if they are still there of course') Glad you enjoyed your day.

    1. I would love to go back and explore Lord Street some more, I loved the look of it, so many shops on just one street, and the architecture was fabulous. Maybe I'll get a weekend there sometime.

  7. And did you see the sea at Southport? It's been ages since I was there and I remember the sea never usually comes close in!

    1. We saw lots of sand dunes, though I can't say we actually went near the beach. I remember St Annes being the same, you have to walk quite a way to get to the sea.

  8. A day across the Pennines sounds wonderful to me! Must make another trip to England one day, but air travel has become positively painful!

  10. The children's playground seemed to be very popular, they are so much more varied these days.
Nice to have a taster day and know you've found somewhere you'd like to go back to one day.

    1. The children's playground was packed, it's obviously well used and the equipment looked great. I would have liked to have spent longer in Southport, but at least there's plenty more to see when we do return.

    1. We save up 2p coins for when we go to the seaside, but we usually forget them and then we end up having to change pound coins while we're there. I love those shove machines best.
