Changing Colours

Archie's walk on Saturday was in the grounds of Temple Newsam. As you know, we often visit this stately home and its 1500 acres of parkland.

It was a lovely morning for a walk, quite mild and only a small breeze.

The trees are looking glorious at the moment in their autumn colour, though it won't be long now until they've completely dropped their leaves.

The beech walk looks a little sad, there aren't many leaves left here.

There's still quite a few flowers blooming though.

Hydrangeas look so pretty if their blooms are left to fade, so much nicer than cutting them off when they've finished flowering.

There's lots of berries this year too, a sign of a harsh winter to come, I wonder.

The rhododendrons have already formed their flower buds ready for spring.

Archie loves autumn, the fallen leaves are too much to resist. He loves to hear the noise they make as he runs through them.

Here he is just ready to start rolling around in all the leaves.

The ducks on the lake were enjoying the beautiful morning just as much as all the visitors were.

The grounds of Temple Newsam were landscaped by Capability Brown. I think he did a marvelous job around the lake, I just love all the different planting which gives a palette of such different colours.

I'm making the most of all the autumn colour as it won't last much longer.

The weather is set to become much colder over the next couple of days and snow has even been mentioned, I hope it passes us by, I'm not ready for that quite yet.

  2. Lovely colours and lovely to see Archie playing in the leaves, it is so cute when dogs do these sorts of things, like when they go rolling in the snow! xx

    1. Hmmm, Archie generally rolls when he's found some muck to roll in. Not so cute. The colours are gorgeous at the moment. I'm not really a lover of autumn but I do appreciate all the colours at this time of year.

  3. Archie is so cute. These trees are still looking really colorful and you still have so many flowers in bloom there. It's already looking very gray and brown around me. Hope you have a good week, Jo. :)

    1. It's surprising how much colour is still around in November, I think it's because our autumn has been so mild so far. Archie loves his walks.

  4. I've not visited Temple Newsam, but one day if we come across and meet, I'll tell you a great story about it. I too love the colours of autumn and Archie looks like he's having fun. We had a cat who loved scattering the fallen leaves after we had raked them up. Take care and stay warm.

    1. I grew up within walking distance of Temple Newsam, and I'm still only a ten minute car drive away. I'd love to know the story. Archie loves the fallen leaves, I can only think that it's the noise they make as he runs through them, much the same as rock pools, he loves those too.

    1. It was rather cold on Friday, it had warmed up again by Saturday though. There's a great children's playground, and of course, the farm.

    1. There's such a lot of colour still around to say it's November. I'm sure that will change by the end of the week though, once the cold snap's here.

    1. He's adorable when he's not rolling in muck. The colours are just glorious at the moment, though I don't think they'll hang on much longer now, a strong gust of wind and I think the leaves will be down.

  8. That's a lovely place to take a walk with Archie. He must have had a good time running through the leaves. The beech walk is pretty and I can imagine it was even lovelier a while ago when more leaves were on the branches.

    1. Temple Newsam is a favourite with us all. The beech walk is round the back of the house where the gardens are more formal, they're really pretty in summer.

  9. A day like that at this time of year is always welcome. It's good to see Archie enjoying himself. I don't mind it being cold and sunny, but I can do without snow. Flighty xx

    1. Archie does enjoy his walks, he likes to be off his lead, though he never ventures far from us. It's a crisp day here today, cold but sunny which I don't mind either, but like you, I can do without snow.

  13. What lovely photos. I bet now is a great time to go to Temple Newsham, before the leaves drop altogether. It's turned so cold, hasn't it? I hope we don't get snow just yet!

    1. Temple Newsam has something to offer whatever the time of year. There's a rhododendron walk which is beautiful when in flower. It has turned cold, though it seems to have warmed up a bit today, hopefully the snow will stay away.

    1. Archie loves things which make a noise, like running through water, so crunchy leaves are perfect for him. He had a great time.

    1. We really do have some beautiful places here in Yorkshire and many of them are on our doorstep, we're so lucky. Just make sure the leaves are still crunchy before you go rolling around in them, nothing worse than wet, soggy leaves.

    1. We didn't go up to the gardens as Archie has to be on his lead through there. The rhododendron walk is definitely worth a visit when they're in flower. We walked through that way when we visited and Mick jumped out of his skin when a big black Labrador came galloping out of the rhododendrons. We didn't know he was in there and he gave us quite a fright.
