A Windfall

My next door neighbour knocked on our door at the weekend with a bag full of pears for us. His tree has produced a bumper crop this year and he wondered if we'd like some. Yes please!

There were just under four pounds of pears in the bag, they should keep us going for a while.

I'd like to use some of them to make a pear cake and a pear tart. I've been looking for recipes and wondered if anyone had any favourites that they'd like to share. I'd be very grateful.

  1. Hi Jo

I have one for an Apple Crumble cake but I think it would work just as well with Pears. Will look it out for you later.

  4. A lovely thought from your neighbour. We don't eat pears here, so no recipe ideas I'm afraid, but I bet that a crumble would be good! xx

    1. My neighbour has been very generous. We don't often eat pears either so I don't have any recipes that I've used previously, I'm sure I'll find something to make with them though.

  5. Oooh there are so many things you could do! Pears in syrup, pear chutney, definitely pear cake (go Swedish with it - Sockerkaka med äpple style!) or just poached in red wine with pices and creme fraiche! Yum!

    Best wishes,

  6. How nice! I don't have a recipe but I think you can usually use pears the same way you would use apples, so a tart or crumble would work great.

    1. I've never cooked with pears before, we usually use apples, but it's good to know that I can just substitute the apples for pears.

  8. I've a recipe that combines pears and cranberries in a crisp that is lovely... sweet and a little bit tart.
I'm sure if you Google for yummy suggestions there's many to choose from.
    Enjoy!

    1. I think there's too much choice sometimes, that's why recommendations are good to have.

    1. I hope you stocked your freezer up first, though I love to share my surplus. People are always really pleased to receive free food as it's so expensive these days.

  10. Hi Jo.
If you go to the Lorraine Pascale website and type in pear to the search box, it will bring you to a fantastic pear tart. It is very easy to make and taste fantastic.
You can also peel and half the pears put them in the end of a cake tin and cover with a chocolate sponge mix. When it is cooked turn out and you have a lovely pear and chocolate upside down cake. Have fun.

    1. I do enjoy a pear but it's a fruit I rarely buy, the same with plums actually. You'll have to plant a pear tree to keep S supplied.
