A Day At The Coast

We had a day at the East Coast last Tuesday when Mick was still on holiday. It was rather murky as we set off, but the fog soon lifted and it turned out to be a lovely day.

We love it at Fraisthorpe, it doesn't get crowded like the beaches at Bridlington or Scarborough, the more popular seaside towns. Archie is allowed on the beach too, and there's plenty of space for him to have a good run around.

There's still lots of WW2 anti-invasion defences in existence, pillboxes and concrete tank blocks.

Archie loves to paddle in all the rockpools. There's many of them on Fraisthorpe beach.

Even though we take towels with us, Archie still prefers his own method of drying off, rolling in the sand. He just looks like a ball of fluff here.

We always like to have a wander right along the beach, and some of us like to have a paddle, if not a swim. Not me, I hasten to add. It was such a lovely day that Eleanor had her bikini on and she got her back burnt. Luckily, it wasn't sore.

I love how the many rocks on the beach are completely covered in seaweed and moss.

Our beachcombing turned up more than sea glass on this occasion. Here's the skeleton of a fish we found. Mick thought it might be a Monkfish.

Fraisthorpe is less than five miles away from Bridlington, which can be seen from the beach.

We spent a good few hours on Fraisthorpe beach, enjoying our picnic and playing cricket. I even did a bit of crochet and read some magazines. Later on in the day, we packed up our things and journeyed on in to Bridlington.

Bridlington is such a built up, touristy seaside town. There's amusements, gift shops, ice cream stalls and fish and chip shops, but we enjoy having a stroll along the promenade. We even ventured in to an amusement arcade and risked a pound each, before enjoying a tray of chips smothered in salt and vinegar as we looked out to sea. We thought better of going on any funfair rides with full tummies though.

All too soon we were back in the car and heading home. I hope we manage another trip to the coast soon.

  1. I do love the East coast. When I lived in Driffield as a child, we used to go on Trip Day. The town would be deserted as we piled onto trains and headed to Brid for the day. It was the only time we went to the seaside when we lived there, and I have very happy memories of it.These days we prefer Scarborough, though we haven't been this year.

    1. We visit lots of places along the East coast, each place has something which makes it endearing. Bridlington was the place where my family holidayed each year before I was born, in fact, I took my first steps on the beach there. I think Scarborough has something for everyone, the North Bay and South Bay both have a totally different feel to them.

  2. We often go there and Flamborough is a favourite. Bridlington is so commercialised - still prefer Whitby.

    1. It's a few years since we've been to Flamborough, though it's on my list of places to go. I love Whitby too. We're so spoilt with the Yorkshire Coast, so many lovely places.

    1. It was. I thought we might be making a mistake setting off in the fog, but you can see how blue the sky is in my photos, I'm so pleased it came out nice in the end.

  4. Love beaches. That is one ugly fish - almost scary.

    1. It's a huge beach at Fraisthorpe, plenty of space for Archie to run around. The fish skeleton was ugly, I'd love to know if it was a Monkfish or something else.

    1. It was a great day. Daniel came with us too, which was nice. He doesn't often come on days out with us these days.

    1. It can be a bit of a scramble to get somewhere to sit on the beach at Bridlington or Scarborough. Quiet beaches are much more my thing too.

  8. It's always good to get to the coast and you had lovely weather for it. I'm sure everyone, including Archie had a relaxing time. Thanks for posting about Fraisthorpe as a wide stretch of beach is a good one for our sporty grandson who is always kicking a ball around. It reminds me of Cleethorpes which we went with the family to once. The downside was that the sea went out so far.

    1. We love quieter stretches of beach, there's nothing worse than having to hunt out space to lay down a picnic blanket. There's many beaches where dogs aren't allowed but Archie is able to come off his lead at Fraisthorpe and have a good run round. We did have a relaxing time.

    1. There's nothing there, only the beach, which suits us. We can carry on up to Bridlington or Scarborough after we've been to the beach, as we did last Tuesday, if we want to afterwards.

    1. Archie had a great day. He didn't roll in the fish skeleton, but he was extremely interested in it. He had to be dragged away.

  11. What a lovely day out. I've never visited that beach but I do love the East coast. We don't go there enough. It's always good to be by the sea and you had a lovely day for it. x

    1. We love the East coast but don't go as often as we'd like. Each time we go we say we must return soon. We had a gorgeous day, blue skies and not a cloud to be seen.

    1. Archie really knows how to have a good time. This part of the coast is our most local beach so we've spent a good amount of time there over the years. It's nice that there's traditional seaside towns mixed in with lots of quieter spots, something for everyone.

    1. We weren't quite alone on the beach but it was certainly quieter than the busier resorts of Bridlington and Scarborough. We love Fraisthorpe as there's just so much space, it's huge.

    1. I love finding interesting things on the beach, I walk around with my eyes permanently on the sand hoping that I'll find something. I think the seaweed is fascinating, clinging to all the rocks as it does. We had a lovely week going here and there. Mick did the same thing last year, took a week off at the end of the school holidays, and we really enjoyed having day trips out so he decided to take a week off again this year.
