Crossing The Border To Devon

Whenever we've stayed in Cornwall, we've always had a day trip across the border in to Devon to visit Ilfracombe.

This year, someone greeted us who hadn't been there in previous years. This is Verity, Damien Hirst's 66 foot bronze-clad sculpture. She was hoisted in to position last October. Pregnant Verity, holding a sword aloft and standing on legal books, is meant to be a modern representation of truth and justice.

Ilfracombe is a traditional seaside resort and a little more bustling than the small seaside villages in Cornwall. There's a harbour, a sea front and lots of shops and restaurants. There's also one or two amusement arcades, so we all changed our pound coins for 2p's and had a little fun.

Fish and Chips were the order of the day, they were delicious.

Archie and I sat in the glorious sunshine watching the world go by whilst the rest of the family challenged each other to a game of Crazy Golf, a regular event whenever we visit Ilfracombe.

It was another lovely day out.

    1. Ilfracombe is a lot more touristy than the villages in Cornwall, but it still has it's charm. It's a place we head to each year we're in Cornwall.

    1. I remember crazy golf from my childhood days. We holidayed in Skegness every year, and after dinner we'd all head off to the crazy golf course. Such fond memories.

    1. It was a lovely day out. I have to say, the fish and chips were absolutely delicious, the batter so light and the fish cooked to perfection. The chips weren't half bad either.

  4. I've never heard of this statue, must look it up.
Oh that fish looks very tasty.
It's nice having the little traditions like the game of crazy golf to look forward to.

    1. I gave you the better view of the statue. To be honest, it can look a bit grotesque from other angles and apparently, divided opinions amongst the residents of Ilfracombe. The fish was tasty indeed, cooked to perfection. They all look forward to crazy golf, they wanted to go to pitch and putt too but didn't get time. Perhaps later on in the holidays.

    1. You don't tend to see much of a place when you're there for another reason. The fish and chips were delicious.

    1. I think so many English seaside towns have been spoilt, but Ilfracombe isn't one of them, as you say, it's a pretty place.

  7. It sounds as if Ilfracombe has changed quite a bit since my childhood
holidays in the area! However, you never forget the excitement of the first glimpse of the sea after a long drive to get there. Fish and chips and crazy golf are all part of the fun of such a resort, but the Damien Hirst statue looks a little strange in that setting of the harbour!

    1. Sorry, I deleted your comment by mistake. I can imagine very happy childhood holidays in Ilfracombe. We never holidayed down south, we had lots of holidays in Skegness, I loved it there. I'm not sure about the statue either, I can't make my mind up about it.
