The Fent Shop

We decided we'd have a day out on Saturday, and as I was wanting some yarn for a new crochet project, we decided on Skipton.

Skipton is a lovely market town in the Yorkshire Dales. We parked by the side of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Some people were just heading out on a boat trip, but although the sun was shining, it was still very cold. I prefer being on the water when the weather's a bit warmer.

Saturday (as well as Monday, Wednesday and Friday) is market day in Skipton and the town was heaving. The market stalls are set on each side of the high street and sell a wide range of goods from old fashioned sweeties to meat and pet accessories.

We had a wander around the market as well as the shops. There was also a flea market being held which we had a snoop around. The shop I was itching to get to though, was The Fent Shop. It's website bills it as a sewers paradise, it's literally packed to the rafters with fabric, but it also sells yarn, and in particular, it sells Stylecraft Special DK which is the yarn I was after for my project.

The project I'm wanting to start is a ripple blanket. I've never even tried the pattern up to now, but I'm sure I'll muddle through. I want it to be different shades of blue with a grey and a white thrown in to break them up a little. I managed to get everything I needed from The Fent Shop, and also bought a ball of Aran for my next knitting project.

We had a lovely day out, and it was extra nice to have a bit of sunshine too, though it was still very cold.

  1. Hi Jo, I love the colours you've chosen. I've just blogged about a ripple I made for my brother's baby girl. She's not here yet but will be soon! Good luck with the ripple pattern I find Lucy from Attic 24's very easy to follow, if you use it don't forget to do multiples of 14 plus 3 for turning! I've just caught up with your blog, Eleanor is doing very well with her music, tell her well done from me. I've also seen Mildred Pierce with Joan Crawford. Good film, and what a daughter she had! Haha. Hope you're well xxx

    1. I've chosen these colours as I'd like it to be for Daniel, we'll see how it goes. Eleanor's really enjoying her music, I'm really pleased that she's so interested in it, I don't know where she gets it from. I enjoyed Mildred Pierce, yes the daughter was a nightmare, I know what I'd have liked to do to her.

  2. Once you get going with your ripple, you'll love working on it, I'm sure. I too made one - or 2 or 3!! - using Lucy from attic 24's pattern. I think she lives in Skipton so you might have passed her in the street on your day there! :o)

    1. I passed the cafe where Lucy and her friends have their Knit and Natter meetings, the Yarndale sheep was in the window. I haven't started the ripple yet but I'm itching to get going.

  3. I could certainly do with a blanket here - our heating is on the blink and worse no hot water either. KP was not impressed to have a bath and hair wash in lukewarm water before heading off to a reunion party with some of her old friends earlier!
FYI - although I'm posting blogger is not updating that I have!

    1. Poor KP having to have a bath in lukewarm water, it's terrible when the heating breaks down, especially when it controls the hot water too. I'm sure she'll have a great time at her reunion party though. Blogger can be a pest not updating new posts, I never rely on it.

    1. I'm looking forward to starting my ripple, I hope I can manage the pattern. There's another lovely wool shop in Skipton, Purl and Jane, some scrummy yarn in there but I resisted this time.

  5. Oh, Jo you've done it again with those photos making me homesick. I've been to Skipton on Market Days and I love it.
Never saw the shops you've mentioned, but did buy a Xmas decoration in the lovely arcade. Love your wool and am sure you'll do well with your ripple blanket. I just bought wool for a textured scarf which I couldn't resist. I'll update my blog tonight and put that on.

  6. I like the dusky blue and the grey you have chosen for your blanket.
I love seeing barges on a canal, they are always so jolly and bright.
Looks like a good venue for a day out for lots of reasons.

    1. I've chosen boy colours for this blanket, it will make a change working in blues and greys. The canal boats always remind me of Rosie and Jim from when Daniel and Eleanor were small, they used to love that programme. I love Skipton, it's a great little town with lots to see and do.

  8. Hi Jo
I've been to the Fent shop too a couple of years ago - I got some lovely linen fabric for cushions. Skipton is lovely - must have another trip there soon.

    1. I must admit that I didn't look at the fabric this time, but Eleanor did say that she wants to go back so that she can have a good look round. It's a good excuse for another trip.

    1. It's a great shop, much bigger inside than it looks from the outside. I chose the colours as they'll be good for Daniel, I'd like to do a blanket for him this time.

  12. Oh, what a nice day. The last time I went to Skipton is snowed. I'd like to go there on a sunny day. Good luck with your ripple blanket. I want to start one too, one day. When I feel brave enough! x

    1. It was cold in the shade, but at least the sun put in an appearance. It's a lovely town though with lots going for it.
