It was only a couple of posts ago that I mentioned I'd only ever eaten eggs from hens before, so I'd bought some duck eggs to try. So, what a coincidence that I won a goose egg in a competition on Sue's Our New Life in the Country blog.
Three Skyline hens recently came to live with Sue, so she set a competition for her readers to name them. The three winners would be sent a goose egg layed by one of Sue's Chinese Grey geese, Harry, Larry and Mo.
Sue posted a photo on her blog, and I thought the name Dolly would suit one of them just fine, so this was the name I suggested. Sue liked it, so I was chosen as one of the winners, and on Friday afternoon, the postman duly delivered my goose egg. I have to say that Sue had done a marvellous job in protecting it for it's journey through the post. It was wrapped in large bubble wrap and nestled safely inside an ice cream tub. I'd had reservations about whether it would reach me in once piece, but I needn't have worried.
Goose eggs are equivalent in size to three hen eggs, you can see the difference.
I had a very tasty breakfast on Saturday, scrambled goose egg, two slices of toast and a rasher of bacon. It was delicious. There wasn't really a difference in taste between the goose egg and a hen egg, but it certainly tasted fresh, and just look at the colour of it, the yolk was so bright.
Thank you, Sue, and a huge thank you to Harry, Larry and Mo too.
I don't know if I'd have been brave enough to send an egg by post. So glad it arrived still intact, what a mess you would have found otherwise.

I'd have never thought of sending an egg through the post. The package was well labelled with 'fragile' though, and the egg was very well packaged.
DeleteWell done Royal Mail for getting that to you in one piece! They're very special eggs, goose eggs, as they only lay when the days are longer than 12 hours, so the laying season is short (I must sound like the mad egg woman, but I know about them because we used to have hens and considered getting geese for a while! I'm not a mad egg lady!). But well done and yum!

I didn't know that about geese only lay when the days are longer than 12 hours. There's so much I have to learn.
DeleteWow, I certainly wouldn't have been game enough to post an egg, although I did get those choccy eggs all the way from UK. Do Harry or Larry really lay eggs?
ReplyDeleteI'd have never thought to post an egg. Harry and Larry both lay eggs because they're girlies. Have a look at these posts:-

Aren't they beauties?
That looks scrumptious, what a lovely thing to win :) I've eaten a fair few duck eggs, but I've yet to try goose!
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever had anything so unusual sent to me through the post before. I really enjoyed eating it for my breakfast on Saturday. You certainly get your money's worth with a goose egg, they're huge.
DeleteNever heard of an egg being sent through the post before AND it survived! Never tried a goose egg before, it looks huge. Tried duck eggs though. That looked a lovely filling breakfast Jo x
ReplyDeleteIt was really filling, I didn't eat anything else all day until tea time. Delicious too.
DeleteThat's interesting that a goose egg tastes the same as a hen's egg, I would have assumed that a goose egg would have a much stronger taste, and boy are they huge.
ReplyDeleteI really thought that hen eggs, duck eggs and goose eggs would all taste different, but they really don't. The size of each is totally different though.
DeleteGoodness me, I thought it was large for a chicken when I first saw the picture! It must have been so well packaged, as I was reading I was amazed that it had traveled through the post. Glad it was yummy :) xx
ReplyDeleteI think a chicken would have tears in her eyes if she had to lay that. I'm so pleased that it arrived in one piece and that I got to eat it.
DeleteAmazing that it didin't arrive scrambled! Glad you had the opportunity to taste it.
ReplyDeleteJune
It was in a plastic ice cream container, so I suppose I could have just poured it out. The bubble wrap might have hampered things though. I'm so pleased it arrived safe and sound.
DeleteThat looks and sounds delicious! Flighty xx
ReplyDeleteIt was. They might even make it on to the shopping list from now on.
DeleteSo glad the egg arrived safely and you had a delicious breakfast!
ReplyDeleteI love eggs cooked any way, so this really was a treat.
DeleteCongratulations on your win, I never would have thought an egg would have survived the Royal Mail. Breakfast looks delicious, I love scrambled egg, but like you have only ever had ones from hens.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I was a bit concerned when Sue said she was posting an egg, I had visions of a sloppy parcel being received, but I needn't have worried. I love eggs cooked any way.
DeleteFair play to the postal service.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit to being impressed with them on this occasion, I was less impressed yesterday when it cost me £8 to post a parcel within the UK.
DeleteI never would have thought it would have tasted the same. It sure looks the same once cooked. Thanks for sharing that information.
ReplyDeleteIt does look and taste the same, though there's definitely more of it. It was very filling.
DeleteThat's the most amazing thing to receive through the post. I'm glad it was delicious too. Jx
ReplyDeleteI think it's definitely the most unusual thing I've ever received through the post. I don't think I'd have attempted to post it myself, but it just shows that it can be done.
DeleteI've never eaten a goose egg and I can't get over how big it is! How great that it arrived unbroken too. x
ReplyDeleteIt was huge, it certainly made a filling meal. I was so impressed that it arrived in one piece.
DeleteYou are getting to know quite a lot about eggs!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you need to try quail eggs next?
Lisa x
I know, I was wondering about quail eggs myself. I reckon you'd need a few of those though to make a hearty breakfast.
DeleteOh wow ... just recieving a goose egg in the mail in perfect shape ...would have me clapping wildly ! Your picture of how lovely you scrambled it made me VERY hungry YUM !
ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to bits. I'll probably treat myself to some goose eggs now and then now that I've tried them.
DeleteWow I never would of thought of posting an egg!! I have not tried goose egg,or seen them for sale, have seen the ostrich eggs in farmers markets they are huge!
ReplyDeleteI think an ostrich egg is going a little too far, I should imagine one egg would feed the whole family.
DeleteThat looks delicious Jo! Congratulations on winning. Dolly is a sweet name.
ReplyDeleteSft x
Thank you. I thought Dolly suited her so I hope she likes her name.
