Blanket Update

I'm still crocheting my one granny square each day and adding it to my blanket.

By my reckoning, we're on the seventy first day of the year, so there should be seventy one squares. There's only sixty eight, I'm a couple behind.

I'm going to visit a friend this morning, but I'm intending to catch up with my blanket this afternoon, so I'll be back on track again.

I'm sewing in the ends each time I complete a row, that way I'm not left with hundreds of ends to sew in at the very end. That would be a daunting task.

I'm happy with how it's going so far. All the colours are chosen randomly, but I think they're working out fine.

  1. That is so pretty. You're right - the colours are working out well. I still haven't got round to learning to crochet!

    1. I'm finding this blanket so relaxing. One square each day leaves me plenty of time to do other things too. You must learn to crochet, if I can do it, anyone can.

  2. What vibrant colours. You're doing a great job, and sewing in the ends as you go seems like a very sensible thing to do.

    1. I got this yarn for Christmas so didn't have a say in which colours were chosen. I really like them though, they balance out quite well. I couldn't face those hundreds of ends at the end of the project, so I'm adamant that they'll be sewn in as I go.

    1. I'm really not thinking about placement of the colours, yet they seem to be working out well. I hope it doesn't go pear shaped from here on in.

  4. The blanket is lovely. I like the way the edges of each square look as if they are slotted into one another and gives added interest.
Makes me want to have a go as it looks more manageable than sewing or knitting.

    1. The edges of each square look that way because I'm joining as I go, it's the first time I've joined this way. It will save me a lot of time at the end. I think crochet is easier than knitting as you only have one stitch to worry about, and I've never got the hang of sewing.

  5. Working out more than fine I reckon, it's looking really good!
And just imagine how snuggly it'll be by the time we get to October.

    1. One thing about doing a square each day is that I know roughly when it will be finished. Should be well in time for autumn.

  6. I'm liking that a lot and sewing in the ends as you go is great. I do like tidy and always make sure with my quilts that I have no loose threads. Must get out my crochet hook and some wool and do something as well.

    1. I don't think I could face sewing all those ends in at the end, much simpler to do it as you go along. Looking forward to hearing what you decide to crochet.

  7. You're so good, I never seem to learn my lesson when it comes to sewing in the ends. The colours look fab together, it's going to be so beautiful and snugglesome for the Autumn :) xx

    1. I don't think the blanket would ever get finished if I was faced with all the ends to sew in at once. It'll be nice having a new blanket to use in autumn.

  8. It looks lovely, Jo. I missed mine after I gave it to Michelle so I've started another one. It's four rounds though so hopefully it won't take too long. I haven't sewn in any ends yet but I'm planning to before it gets too big and I'm overwhelmed! xxx

    1. My squares are four rounds too, not too big but still small enough. Ends can be very overwhelming when your faced with a whole blanket worth to sew in.

  9. The colours are beautiful - some brightness in this cold, dull weather we're having. Wish I could crochet ...

    1. I didn't choose the colours myself, but I'm very pleased with them. I taught myself to crochet, take a look at the tutorials on YouTube, that's how I learnt.

  10. Well done! I like how the colors are turning out. Sewing in all the ends after each row is a brilliant way to do it. Much better than waiting until the end!

    1. It's bad enough having the ends of each row to sew in, I can't imagine what a task it would be if I'd waiting until the end to sew them all in. I'm pleased with the randomness of the colours.

  13. I want to learn to crochet this year. I love the idea of doing a square a day. How long does it take you to complete one?

    1. Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment. It probably takes about twenty minutes to do a square like this with four rounds. I've only been crocheting for a couple of years, I learnt from the tutorials on YouTube.

    2. It may take me a little longer than 20 minutes but I'll give it a go. Someone else suggested tutorials on YouTube too, I really wouldn't have thought of that!

    3. This post on my blog has the links to the tutorials I used. I can tell you that it took me a lot longer than twenty minutes when I first started to crochet, but speed comes with practice.

    1. It's at the size now where it's keeping me nice and warm whilst I'm working on it, which is good at the moment, but I don't know if I'll be able to stand it in summer. That's assuming we're going to get a summer this year, I'm not so sure after the washout we had last year.

  15. It's gorgeous! I love it, it's so colouful and cheerful. I like the way you are making one square per day - that's a nice idea. And I sew the ends in as I go too. Like you say, it's just too daunting to leave hundreds of them to do at the end of a project.

    1. It makes a large project like this very manageable, even for a beginner. I must admit to falling a day or two behind on occasions, but it's easy to catch up again.

  17. Jo your blanket is comming along great and it's looking so good.

Thank you for your comments on my new bredmaker post. Your are doing the best tip I can give you. Bake your bread dough. Don't let the bread maker do it for you. I hate my bread cooked in the breadmaker and always cook my dough in the oven. I will drop by with any good recipes I make in my breadmaker. If you like hot x buns I have a recipe I use which My daughters love and even I do, and I hate owt with rasins in! xx

    1. Thank you. I'm really enjoying crocheting this blanket. I think there's quite a few people who bake their bread in the oven after using the breadmaker to make the dough. We're not lovers of hot x buns as we don't like cinnamon, which is probably good otherwise I'd be breaking my diet at this time of year. It's bad enough avoiding chocolate.
