Preparing For Winter

Last winter was especially harsh and I consider myself very lucky that I didn't have any burst pipes to deal with, I know so many people did. Water expands when it freezes and if the water's in a pipe when it freezes, it expands just the same and can cause the pipe to burst.

I came across an offer from Yorkshire Water offering it's customers a free Winter Protection Kit. I sent off for it and it was delivered today.

Included in the kit was a leaflet full of useful advice on how to get your house ready for winter.


Pipe lagging to protect wall-secured pipes and some cable ties to secure it with.


A tap cover to insulate an outside tap.


This lot should help me to get the house ready for whatever winter has got in store for us, let's hope it's not needed though.

I know other water companies as well as Yorkshire Water are offering similar kits, so do check out your own water company's website.

    We've just paid £14, an annual amount to insure against burst pipes. Money well spent we think.

    Sft - Hope you find a similar offer from your water company. I think the insurance sounds like a good idea, especially if we have a winter like we did last year.

    I remember our old boiler breaking down one winter, Lisa. It was a combination boiler so we didn't have hot water either. It's definitely worth getting it checked out before winter.
