Amaryllis

It took a while but it finally got there. I bought my mum an amaryllis for Christmas and shortly afterwards, I bought one for myself. Admittedly, my mum's was started off a little while before mine was but hers bloomed ages ago. I'm sure you'll agree that mine was worth the wait though.

I don't think I've ever grown one in the past which had as much foliage at the time of blooming as this one does, they're usually just flower spikes and the leaves tend to come later.

If you look around the back you can see that a second flower spike has started to grow so there's more beautiful blooms to come.

As for the amaryllis bulb I kept from last year, well, it hasn't done much I'm afraid. Just three tall leaves and no sign of any blooms, though I think you're supposed to feed them after flowering and I never did that. Never mind, they're cheap enough to buy new each year.

    1. It was the only colour they had left when I treated myself to this bulb but I'm very happy with it.

  2. I've not bought an Amaryllis for years. I used to have one every year for a while. I don't know why I stopped because when the blooms appear they are beautiful.

    1. They're such easy plants to grow if you buy them already potted up, but as you say, they put on a marvellous display.

  3. They are always worth the wait, yours is stunning. I normally get the flowers first and then the leaves. Mine is still flowering, I have 1 stem in full bloom, 1 stem going over and the last stem is gone over, it was the best bulb ever for me.

    1. I don't think I've ever had one with three flower stems, you've been very spoilt.

  4. That's spectacular! I used to buy one every year for my grandmother. She was housebound and liked to watch its progress as it grew. x

    1. I bought one for my mum for Christmas, she has dementia and I thought it might interest her seeing it grow. Each day that I go round to see her she tells me how much it's grown, numerous times. My dad's enjoyed watching it grow too.

    1. They last a good couple of weeks, and if you're lucky to get a second flower bud which comes after the first it obviously extends the flowering period.

    1. The second bud is behind the plant so it had shot up before I even realised it was there. It'll extend the flowering period which I'm pleased about.

  9. This is the second year that I missed out on having an Amaryllis, I have never been very successful in keeping them from year to year. They are stunning and I will try to remember for next year.

    1. It's the first time that I've kept a bulb from one year to the next but it hasn't been very successful, I'm really pleased that I invested in a new one too otherwise I wouldn't have got any blooms this year.

    1. I think half the fun of growing an amaryllis is watching it grow right from the beginning, the flower stems are like something prehistoric and grow at quite a pace.

    1. They seem quite popular now, even the supermarkets sell them and they're not very expensive either. Certainly cheaper than a nice bunch of flowers and they last much longer.

And I never bought any bulbs, to grow inside, in winter. -pout- Silly me.

    Happy Spring!

  20. Wow you got a good one there! The last one I planted had a second flower stalk and it was only one of the cheaper bulbs from Aldi.
Yours looks lovely, the red is very striking.
I replanted a bulb too one year and got nothing from it, i've since read that they don't tend to come again which is a shame.

    1. I picked this one up after Christmas in Tesco and it was half price, they're not all that expensive anyway. I think the secret to getting a bulb to flower a second time is to feed it once it stops flowering, which I omitted to do last year. Never mind, they're cheap enough to buy new each year.

  22. Gorgeous. I’ve never had much luck with indoor flowers, but may need to give it another try...this is so pretty and it’s been such an ugly cold, gray winter...one really needs some color. Sorry I am not able to leave a proper link to my blog, as I’m on my ipad and it’s simply to hard.
