Yarn In And Out

At the beginning of last year I made a decision to track the yarn coming into my house against the yarn I used up. I do have quite a large yarn stash and I was curious to know whether I was using more than I was acquiring. I'm not going to say buying as I also receive yarn as gifts, I've been known to win yarn in giveaways and knitalongs too.

So at the end of the year I added together the amount of yarn which had come into the house and found that totalled 2590 grams. Goodness, I'd have never guessed it would amount to that. When I added up what I'd used it came to 1152 grams. That means there's an extra 1438 grams in the house to begin 2026 than there was when 2025 began. Ooops.

Guess what, I don't care, haha. Collecting yarn is a hobby in itself, all that beautiful hand dyed yarn, though I'm rather partial to commercial yarn too, there's plenty of that in my stash. I wasn't trying to use more than I acquired, I was just interested to see what the result would be. I think I'll do it again and see what the figures are this year.

  1. You have some nice brands and colours there, I see loads of shades of green, a colour I love, it was a dangerous study to make, I'm glad you added the 'haha', it's lovely to fancy to knit something and check to find you have the perfect yarn to use. I am trying to use up my odd bits and balls, my next post is a start of a new project.

    1. I wouldn't have thought I'd gravitate towards greens but I have lots in my stash, blue is my colour really yet I don't have so much of that. Yes, it's nice to have just the right yarn already in stash when I want to start a project.

    1. My beautiful skeins are just as pleasurable as special trinkets, though I may never get round to using up all my stash, it's vast.

  3. my weakness is anything to do with watercolours, art books and paintbrushes, I smuggle them in (so even I don't know how much I am caching - haha) but - like your wool stash, it brings me pleasure and I suspect it is not going to stop any time soon.

    1. The problem is it's just so hard to resist, so why try? haha. I know other hobbies cost so much more so I try not to dwell on how much I'm spending, it's a small amount compared to the pleasure it brings.

  6. Is that ALL your yarn? I would say you've been quite restrained. I think a trip to the yarn store might be in order. LOL In any case --- lovely stash!

    1. No no no, that is not all my yarn, haha. That is a very small percentage of my stash. I may have to pull it all out one day and confess, though it would take quite some time.

  7. I'm on a "buy no yarn in 2026" drive, as I'm fairly sure my yarn stash will outlive me.

    1. Good luck with that. Although I would like to use up some of what I've already got, I'm just not strong willed enough to make no purchases at all, haha.

  9. Buying supplies is an addiction, certainly one I am familiar with, but not as damaging as some addictions (except to the bank balance!)! Using what I have is my goal for this year and 'one in, one out' also. However, as you use your yarn supplies, it's not a problem for you, at all!
    Best wishes

    1. I'm hoping to use more than I buy this year but we'll see what the figures are at the end of the year, I'm not promising anything, haha.

  10. I might just keep track of my yarn in and out this year. I am trying to use what I have but I can't resist some pretty yarn. I would also be interested in knowing if I use more from my stash or more of what I've bought in the year.
